Combine soda, boiling water, and cocoa; set aside to cool. Cream together sugar and shortening, beat in eggs. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately. Stir in vanilla and chocolate mixture (chocolate should be lukewarm), and pour into a well greased and floured pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes.
