Don't use the copper sulfate for root killing. Look it up on google and you'll see that it can mangle your system. Go with rootx or another brand that does not use copper sulfate, since they are much easier on a system and yield the same results. The lowest priced rootx I can find is here newtechbio.com/rootx-root-killer.htm and here froogle. Whatever you go with, make sure you avoid the copper sulfate(any reputable plumber will inform you of the pitfalls of using too harsh of a root killing agent).
Good luck

Be careful with the copper sulfate. It DOES kill bacteria off and can shut down a drain field or leach field in no time. Stright copper sulfate will settle near the bottom of you piping and will miss the roots comming in from the top so if your going to go the copper sulfate route, go with roebic.com, they have copper sulfate in a foaming form that coats the entire line. RootX is septic system friendly, foaming and does NOT contain copper sulfate or bacteria killing compunds(atleast nothing near as deadly as copper sulfate) and does the same thing. Roebic can be had at www.roebic.com and RootX root killer at http://www.newtechbio.com/rootx-root-killer.htm or some ebayers are also selling old stock. It is wise to add bacteria to the tank or system after a treatment of either product especially the copper sulfate.
good luck.

My sister-in-law sent me copper sulphate for killing tree roots. The city put in new plastic pipes , so my problem was solved, but she swears by it. Just put it in the drains and send a small amount of water through. Best to leave overnight or if your going away for a few days.

I am looking for a homemade root killer. I have roots in my septic system drainage. I cannot do laundry without the water overflowing when it spins out. I have to get my drain snaked twice a year. It's getting too expensive to do this.

Thanks,
Tx from Southern, IN

RE: Homemade Root Killer

Up here (in Canada), Tx, we cut down the trees. Some trees are just the kind which spread roots outward (as opposed to downward). If you're getting tired of having your drain snaked, you can certainly dig up some of the roots and chop them away (which seems like an awful lot of work). But as long as the tree is alive, the roots will keep on growing. It's a nuisance I know, and I'm sure you don't want to lose the tree, but maybe consult your local greenhouse for answers or alternative trees which would grow quickly without presenting you the same problem.

Good luck!(10/26/2006)

RE: Homemade Root Killer

Flushing rocksalt down the drain from time to time after drain is cleaned will often help kill roots. (10/26/2006)

RE: Homemade Root Killer

My Mom does the same thing, puts rock salt down the drain once a week. Her plumber told her about that trick for tree roots. (10/28/2006)

RE: Homemade Root Killer

Watch what you flush, you might just kill off the organisms in your septic tank/field that are eating the waste. The term you are looking for is hydrophilic. Any plant that is hydrophilic should not be anywhere close to a drainfield.

Also, look for other causes besides roots. Is the field undersized? Do you have an efflent filter on the outflow of the septic tank? When was the last time your septic tank was checked to see if it should be pumped (2-5 years per check)? (10/29/2006)
