Large Rock Garden Border

My neighbor had large rocks he was going to get rid of. So, I took them and made myself a rock garden. Some things are planted in the dirt, others are in plant containers so I can move them around until I like what I see.

Craft: Converted Coffee Table Display Case

My husband converted a damaged coffee table into a display case and it is now my favorite piece of furniture. You need a coffee table that has a drawer in it as you need a table with a top piece and a bottom piece.

My table already had a recessed area to slide the glass into but if yours doesn't there are other ways to attach a piece of glass, such as using mirror clips on the underside of the top piece. It is hard to give directions for all the different types of tables, but I can give general directions and they would need to be modified for each type of table.

We started with removing the top piece of the coffee table, and removing the insert. We then had a piece of glass cut to fit into the space and we were ready to go. We removed the drawer in the center and took the drawer front off. Reattach the drawer front with hinges to give access to the display case. While the top was off, I lined the inside with some soft fabric in a light brown color which I glued down with spray adhesive. I then added a trim around the edges to cover the raw edges of the fabric.

We reattached the top of the table and now have a display case for collectibles. If your table does not have a recessed area on top, you can cut a hole in the center and use a small molding to cover the cut on top, and use the mirror clips to hold the glass in from the bottom. These are general directions and hopefully the pictures will give a better idea of how to do this.

Carlos and Crede (Orange Tabby, White Siamese)

Carlos and Crede cuddling. Carlos is 6 months old and Crede is about 3 years old. Carlos is an Orange Tabby and Crede is a White Siamese.

We rescued Crede from a shelter in March of 2008. He needed a buddy so we got Carlos about September of 2008. We got Carlos through an ad in the paper.

Carlos likes to play with his buddy Crede. He loves to play with my husband and the laser pen light too. They are so adorable and can come up with some of the cutest sleeping positions. We named them both after 2 baseball players on the Chicago White Sox team.

Dorm Room Necessities

Sending our oldest away to college was going to be difficult enough as she selected a college 4.5 hours away and would be leaving her 10 year old sister behind. To make it more challenging, my job had just been reduced to part time hours so paying for college was an additional concern all of the sudden. In order to provide some basic DORM ROOM necessities, I began collecting items last September to present to her upon graduation from High school.

First I selected a HIGH quality LARGE laundry basket (I wrote her last name on bottom with a black sharpie).

I began by souring the drawers and closets at home for un-used items, purchasing from the dollar store or outlet malls and began redeeming FREE offers from some of the websites that give free samples and redeemed the FREE with purchase gifts when ordering office supplies. I've included most of the following items:

Kitchen Items:

  • coffee mug-both regular (microwave safe) and insulated
  • immersion heater
  • mini-coffee pot
  • food storage containers
  • pizza "sleeves"*
  • can opener
  • spatula
  • measuring spoons
  • chip clips
  • dish towel and pot holder
  • salt and pepper grinders
*disposable plastic pizza slice shaped bags hich store an individual piece of pizza

Cleaning Items:

  • Dust mit
  • dust buster
  • wipes
  • comet
  • toilet brush set
  • dish scrubber
  • MR clean magic eraser
  • free samples of laundry detergent
  • stain remover stick
  • ice scraper
Office Supplies:
  • paper clips
  • magnets
  • push pins
  • pencils
  • pens
  • desk blotter
  • mouse pad
  • portfolio
  • wipe off board
  • sticky tac
  • post it notes
  • CD's
  • extension cord
  • desk lamp
Closet/Storage
  • over the door hangers
  • sweater hangers
  • shoe rack
  • air freshener
  • lingerie bags
  • monogrammed towel set
First Aid Kit
  • bandaids
  • neosporin
  • pain reliever
Inspirational Items
  • puzzle book
  • book mark
  • picture frames
  • blank greeting cards/stamps
  • umbrella
  • sewing kit
  • personal hygiene items (tampons, nail clippers, lint brush)

I plan on adding food items such as Easy Mac, ramen noodles, canned soups, etc. I will add a roll of quarters too and probably a certificate to a fast food restaurant in the area. Then I'll wrap with cellophane purchased after Easter and top with a big bow. Purchasing the itmes a little bit at a time has been FUN (I made a list and only bought when on sale so it was like a scavenger hunt) but spread out the economic impact of the gift.

This gift is practical and can be personalized to each recipient. I have given them in the past and they ahve always been a hit with any teen. You can use any item as your "gift box" if a laundry basket is too expensive or large to fill.

Frugal Tissue Dispenser

As a former teacher I am very much aware of how many out-of-pocket expenses teachers have. One big request is tissues, especially this time of year.

I have made a clever tissue holder for my grandson's teacher. I'm sure she will appreciate not having to add boxes of tissue to her need-to-buy list.

You'll need a large empty coffee can with a snap-on plastic lid, contact paper or wallpaper, non-slip drawer/cabinet liner, Elmer's glue, and a roll of toilet paper.

Remove the plastic lid and cut a round hole (about and inch and a half in diameter) in the center of it. Make four small cuts at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock to "grab" the tissue as it's torn off. (Think about the cuts in the top of a container of wipes.)

Measure the height and circumference of the can. Using these measurements, cut contact paper or wallpaper to cover the can. Contact paper should stick on its own. Use the glue if it doesn't or if you choose to use wallpaper. Apply stickers, stamps, draw designs, personalize it with the teacher's name or decorate the can however you choose.

Set the can on a piece of the non-skid rubber liner and use a pen to draw around the can to show where to cut. Cut out the circle and glue it to the bottom of the can. (Keeps the can from sliding around while a piece of tissue is being pulled out.)

Pull the carboard roll out of the center of the roll of toilet paper. Start pulling the tissue from the inside of the roll of toilet paper and thread it through the hole in the center of the lid. Snap the lid in place on the top of the can.

Now the teacher has a convenient dispenser from which the students can pull off as much or as little as they need. An added benefit for the teacher is that the school supplies toilet paper but not boxes of tissue. To refill all s/he needs to do is to pick up a fresh roll from the janitor.

Go ahead and get busy. Those teachers could use a little lift this time of the year. Next year make one for your child's new teacher and send it in along with supplies on her start-of-school wish list.

Use Child's Wagon to Haul Laundry Outside

Carrying laundry baskets has become a major problem for me as well as the bending and hanging laundry due to fibromyalgia and back problems. But running a dryer isn't economical. So, I load two round baskets instead of using one large basket with my laundry to make them lighter and carry them out the door and put them in a children's wagon. The wagon holds both baskets. I attached a bungee cord to the handle to keep it upright when I am not hanging on to it. I then pull the wagon to the clothes line and hang up my laundry. No bending and minimal carrying.

Loose Hinges and Screws
By Leonard Frick

No, I am not talking about mine. I am talking about your doors and how to fix them.

Doors that now hit the door jam when you close them, or flop around at the hinge, are normally caused by our dear children hanging and swinging on door knobs or by piles of clothing by the wall or behind the door. When they open the door and push it against the clothes the door acts like a teeter-tooter and pulls the bottom hinge and screws out of the door jam. Replacing the screws with longer ones only work if they can grab the board behind the door jam. Often screw holes are to close to the edge of the door jam and longer screws only go into the dry wall next to the door. The board behind the door jam is narrower than the jam so the dry wall can butt up close to the jam and piece of trim that covers this.

Filling the screw holes with wood putty is not recommended. This not strong enough! For the best and fastest fix I recommend cutting large slivers off the corner end of a pine board. A scrap piece of 2X4 works well. A box cutter or sharp knife will do the job; Start your cut about an inch to an inch and a half from the end of the board, at a corner so you are cutting away from yourself, an angle cut slightly into the board so you will end up with a sliver that is large enough to fill the hole. The piece should be pointed at one end and triangular at the other, about 3/16 to 1/4 thick at the thickest part of your sliver.

Now just hammer this into the hole. Hammer it flush with the surface. If your sliver went into easy, just add another smaller one, if your sliver is to big just cut the excess off. Filling the hole tightly makes a good repair. Set your hinge into its slot and install your screw. If you have to drill a pilot hole use a drill bit no thicker that your screws body, the thickness of a screw with out the threads. Eye ball check here is fine if in doubt use a slightly smaller drill bit.

I have had this kind of repair last for years. Thanks for reading.

Cleaning Essential Oil Rings

If you use those metal rings that sit on light bulbs and heat essential oil to "scent" your room, there is an easy way to clean the baked on oil residue that eventually forms. Simply heat the ring in your toaster oven, remove it with metal tongs and place it on a potholder. Then, use one corner of the potholder to hold the ring, while you wipe away the melted oil with cotton swabs. This method works like a charm.

Keep Food Labels for Diabetic Food Exchange

My grown daughter has type I Diabetes and has since she was 8 years old. So ever since she was younger, I save the labels from her favorite or certain foods like cereals, salad dressings, soups, etc. So that when she comes over for a meal, it is much easier for her to be able look at the labels I keep in order to calculate her food exchanges and be able to give her self the right amount of insulin to cover what we will eat.

I also collect certain food exchanges from restaurants that we may go to together and keep them in my car. You can locate them from those web sites and print out a sheet to keep handy. I print small sheets with the information on them and this came in so helpful to her while growing up and going on field trips to fast food restaurants with the school or when spending the night with school friends. And I do this same idea when we have cookouts or picnics and save the labels from sauces or the dishes I have made so she can have more choices and be accurate on her exchanges she will be allowed.

This is also a good habits to practice in case other diabetics are present at these meals or family gatherings/parties. Even if you do not know who are diabetics, just place these labels in a spot easy to be seen so they too can use them and benefit from the idea. Many people do Weight Watchers and this will help them as well should they want to try other foods or dishes.

Source: The idea came to me when she was young and saw she was limited to the things she could eat at parties/family reunions/etc.

Stretching Shake 'n Bake

"Shake N Bake" for Chicken and Pork makes for a good meal yet is expensive! Instead of pouring the package of "Shake N Bake" seasonings into the shaking bag and putting the pieces of chicken or pork in afterward (as the instructions read) simply open up the bag flat and pour the "Shake N Bake" on the flat surface.

Then put pieces on top of the seasoning and proceed to turn the pieces over covering them completely. The seasoning goes a lot further this way.

Using Newspaper Under Mulch

I use newspaper, at least double paged around my plants, then I put mulch on top. It helps to keep plant roots moist, all but eliminates weeds, and by the time the garden is to be tilled the next season, the newspaper has decomposed, and helps to enrich the soil. I simply rake my mulch back, till the soil, plant, place new newspaper, and replace mulch. Helps to save on the cost of mulch too!And a great way to recycle newspapers!

Wash Veggies in the Washing Machine

When my harvest is in, I clean my carrots and cukes and any hard skinned veggie by rinsing out my washer and fill it with cold water and throw in my veggies. I let them soak then put them in the spin cycle and after the spin stops my veggies are totally clean. No soap is needed. Saves a lot of time if you have bushels of veggies to clean.

Check With Your Extension Service When Planting Trees

In trying to decide about planting new trees and what kind, go to your state's extension service. Google (mine) "Minnesota extension service", find gardens, then trees and it will tell you what trees are the native species you should plant for your area as well as the DO NOT PLANT versions, due to disease that can happen. Gardening/seed/trees catalogues cannot be that specific in their information when sending them to the general public. You just get the zone number it is rated for.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The young construction worker was boasting that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of one of his older co-workers.

Finally, the old guy decided he'd had enough and said to the youngster, "Why don't you put your money where your mouth is? I will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you won't be able to wheel back."

"You're on, old man," the braggart said. "Let's see you do your stuff!"

The old man reached out and grabbed a wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to the young man, he said, "All right. Get in."

Homemade Humidifier Water Treatments

My humidifier uses wick filters and I'm replacing the filter every 2-3 weeks. I've tried various water treatment solutions, but they're expensive too. Homemade Faux Finish Paints

Does any one have a frugal alternative to the "suede" paint finishes? It seems to me there must be some kind of fine sand and a gel of sorts to keep the sand suspended in the latex paint. I hate being held hostage by the 'designer' prices for paint and for textured finishes!

Buying a Child's Bowling Ball

What is the lightest weight bowling ball you can buy for a child and where would you buy it at? My 5 year old grandson went bowling for the first time with his parents and he absolutely loved it! What Breed is My Dog?

We adopted Nelly from a rescue group back in June. She is by far one of the sweetest and loving dogs I have ever met. She is very petite, only 22 pounds. My vet has guessed that she may be a shepherd/Shiba Inu mix.

I have scoured the internet looking for images. She doesn't quite fit the Shiba Inu breed. Her fur is sleek and not as thick as either a shepherd or Shiba Inu. Any ideas? She can run for miles and has a keen interest in small critters (chipmunks, squirrels and birds).

Reupholstering Dining Room Chairs

I am presently re-upholstering my daughter's dining room chairs. They have the seat cover and the edge with piping. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I have even basted the corners and done small gathers to no avail. So I added 2 in. to the skirting and still end up with 2 in. of the seat cover to incorporate. I am rusty at sewing as I have not done it in a long time. But this should be 1-2-3 simple. Help please.
