Leo (Ginger Tabby)

Leo is about 3 years old and a ginger tabby. Leo was a terrified, physically and probably mentally abused stray cat that came out of near-by fields around 2 years ago. I leave food out for the many strays in the area, most I never see. He stayed near-by for the food, but wouldn't let me near him. I'd speak sweetly to him and eventually he'd let me within a couple yards, but no closer.

I learned he had a weakness for string, cord, what ever moved like a snake. so I played with him and reassured him many, many times that what I was doing was tossing a cord end to him, not throwing rocks at him. It took months, but he eventually decided I was just barely trustable. He wasn't neutered, and he was a super alpha, so things weren't going too well between us, he was very aggressive. Even today he will swat me occasionally, but it's down to about 3 times a year and now he sheaths his claws and has become as close as any pet can be. It used to be he was always swatting us with unsheathed claws and was always wary.

Before he found our home he had been beaten, kicked, and who knows what else. He had internal injuries he'd somehow managed to not die from and had healed on his own. He's a sweet, gentle boy now, and I can't believe the abuse he went through, why would anyone do that to an animal? I still cry when I think about it. We have gently and patiently re-socialized him. It hasn't been easy, he's had to get over a lot of issues. A lot of love, a huge amount of patience, and a lot of forgiveness has gone into re-socialize him. Neutering helped, as well. it created a gentle, sweet cat from a wild aggressive cat.

His favorite toys are cat whips (strips of flannel with stick handles), string, cord, and me. He so wants me to romp and rough and tumble with him as though I am another cat, but he never has learn to sheath his claws in play.

I just want to say that cruelty towards animals is about as low as anyone can get. A kitten who hasn't had a chance to learn not to play rough doesn't deserve to be beaten. Leo was and is (as all ginger tabbies are) very sweet and loving. If you need a lot of love, get a ginger tabby from a shelter. I can't say enough good things about shelter pets. They just want someone to love. and they will love non-stop. Strays from the field are a piece of work, don't take them in unless you know how to re-socialize animals and are willing to take the time to do so.

In Memory of Angel (Dachshund/Pomeranian)

Angele was 14 years old when she passed away on March 23,2009. She was a longhaired Dachshund and Pomeranian mix. I was nursing in Southern California and became friends with the granddaughter of one of my patients. She owned the parents of the puppies that were to be born and said I needed one! I saw her at 1 day old and brought her home at 6 weeks old. She weighed 19 1/2 ounces!

She was raised with my 20 pound cat named Tyrone. He taught her to use the litter box and she taught him how to play hide and seek and how to love puppies! She worked every day with me in the hospital and visited with young and old, those in bed due to surgery, physical therapy or even I.V. therapy. She had her own folder in the admin. office and nurses, physicians and even inspectors knew her by name and they all loved her. If you are ever blessed with a Angel like mine you will be able to touch the lives of those around you.

Today's Tips:

Use Preparation H For Wrinkle Cream

If you read magazines or watch TV you have seen the ads about making fine lines or wrinkles appear less noticeable. The best thing I have found to work sounds silly but makes sense once you think about it. Wash your face apply your regular moisturizer then tap on preparation H on to fine lines or wrinkles making sure not to pull on skin.

Preparation H is proven to shrink tissue and is safe to use in "sensitive" areas. So why not on your fine lines. Let it set for a few minutes and then apply the rest of your make-up.

Source: I learned this in high school at a beauty seminar. I paid little or no attention to it at the time but it sprang back in to my mind when I noticed I too was aging.

Use a Kleenex Box for Storing Receipts

I am a very disorganized person, so, during the year, I stuff all my bills, receipts, and other papers needed for income taxes into an empty Kleenex box. Then I don't have to hunt for them all over the house.

At the end of each year, after I do my taxes, I put a piece of packaging tape, the wide stuff, over a piece of paper with the year printed on it and tape it across the opening. They are small, sturdy, and fit on the closet shelf perfectly.

Sew Sheet Clips Directly to a Mattress

For my queen size bed I found that the corners of the sheets were always coming loose during the night. So I go some of these elastic things that have the clips on either end that you clip on the sheet at the corners. Well this didn't really do the trick either.

So I took and cut the clips off leaving just about 2 inches of the elastic still attached to each one. I ended up with 8 clips. Then I sewed the clip to the bottom side of the mattress, going in about 4 inches or so with each one. I put them at about the same spots where they were before I cut the clips (either side of each corner).

Now when I put the fitted sheet on I clip it to each clip. It holds the sheet in place nicely till I'm ready to wash and change sheets. No more bunched up bottom sheets!

Use Soda Pop for Clogged Drains

I read through several tips to see if this one had been submitted. I was helping my friend clean a bathroom that had a clogged basin drain. It probably had kitty litter, aquarium gravel, hair and who-knows-what-all down it.

After the two of us polished off half a two-liter bottle of diet pop (on purpose to empty it!), I filled it with water, matched the opening of the bottle to the drain opening and mashed the bottle firmly.

It worked! I re-did it several times until the bottle was all caved in. I then put the stopper in the sink and filled it with soapy water several times, then pulled the plug out and let it run out as fast as it could.

This didn't cost anything and the bottle is recyclable. Hope this helps,

Shop Restaurant Supply Stores

A restaurant supply store is different than a warehouse-type store like Costco. The one I shop at is called Cash and Carry. These allow anyone to purchase without a card. The difference with restaurant supply is that they cater to restaurant owners, which means they will have bulk of vegetables, dairy, baking supplies, cleaning/serving supplies, and some other things. Most of their prices usually beat any other store (like 50 lbs of potatos for $8).

We dry most of our own food, so buying bulk vegetables (like 2.5 lbs of spinach) is wonderful. I highly recommend searching for one in your area. Buying bulk on what you can store will save you a lot.

Mix Brand Name Products With Generic

At least once a month, name brand stuff is on sale. I buy brand name products like; dish liquid, laundry soap, cereal; then I mix it with my generic. I put 3/4 of generic and 1/4 of brand name. Then for cereal, I mix fruit loops, or something like that, with my generic cheerios and leave it in a plastic "tub". Also, when all I have is cheerios, I add sugar right to the container, instead of my family adding it themselves.

Use Thrift Store Mini Skirts as Bargain Belly Bands

This is a slightly unusual tip that I thought to share with you. I wear a stretchy mini skirt around my middle underneath my clothes! At the moment I am an 'apple' shape and due to a medical condition my belly is distended and I look pregnant. I liked the idea of wearing a 'body' under my clothes but they would need washing everyday like regular underwear. They are expensive too.

I found an old mini skirt in my wardrobe from my younger years and wondered if I could use it like a belly band. It's made from cotton with some elastane so it's a comfy fit.I feel like it keeps in my tummy and keeps me warm under my clothes. We had a heatwave not so long ago and I was fine wearing it then. Where I would normally perspire, I was kept dry.

Specially designed belly bands are expensive so I suggest buying a cheap mini skirt (charity shops are a good place to find them in the U.K.) Just try to find one that is the pull-on kind that's nice and stretchy. I told you it was unusual!

Amend Favorite Storybooks for Children

I love my grandson, Maddox. He was born 5 days before I turned 60, and suddenly I had another reason for living. He will be two soon.

I bought the book "Love You Forever". I changed the wording with a red pen so that it is his "Nana" doing the taking. All of a sudden the book takes on new meaning!

I tear up every time I re-read this book!

Company Review: Publix Grocery

I recently bought a food dehydrator and wanted to try beef jerky. I read the instructions and it said to use aged lean beef. I went to Publix Grocery (that was the closest to the motel) and asked what time they marked their meat down and was told they did not. I was puzzled because I thought all grocery stores marked down. They said it was company policy not to they have to throw it away.

I won't shop Publix again, I find this very wasteful and terrible. They would rather throw food away than sell it cheaper. Funny thing is that I don't buy marked down often I shop the sales and will occasionally pick up marked down if something is in line with what I'm shopping for at the time. They just lost one customer due to greed.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

My parents have a friend named Tex. One day I asked him what part of Texas he was from. "I'm not from Texas," he replied.

"But you have a Southern drawl," I insisted.

"Yeah, I do," he admitted. "I'm actually from Louisiana. But you better not call me Louise!"

Body Odor Remedies

Sweating and odor, I will admit to it. I have tried a few things out there with no success till now. I thought I let you know what is working for me that I just discovered.

I first clean off my armpits with alcohol with baby wipes. Then I put a few drops of tea tree oil on a cotton ball and dab it on my armpits. I let it air dry and then you can put on your favorite deodorant. It really works (both tea tree and alcohol kill bacteria). So what do you use?

Requirements for Replacing Propane Tanks

I just refilled my propane tank and was told that I had to replace my tank next time as it has a 7/97 date stamp on the side. They said that the tank is only good for 12 yrs at which time it has to be replaced because of the pressures that build up in the tank. Is this true? Has anybody else been told to replace their tank. They don't sell tanks where I refilled so its not a sales pitch.

Thanks.

Installing a Microwave Oven Over the Range

How can I lower my "over the range microwave" without having to install new cabinets? I just got rid of an old combination range, microwave, vent (one piece that had the microwave under a 5 inch recirculating vent). Now I am installing a new range with an over the range microwave (2 pieces) and the microwave has a built in air recirculator (sucks air in at bottom).

I live in a downstairs condo and do not have nor want to install an outside vent. But my microwave will be about 5 inches too high for my comfort since I am very short. How can I lower the microwave without installing new cabinets and have a nice looking area? Thanks.

Washer Isn't Draining

I have a question on my my Maytag washing machine. It's a top loading Atlantis model. Recently it has been over flowing and not spinning out the water after a wash cycle.

I opened the top and put it through a couple of loads and I noticed that the machine goes into a slow spin after washing, but does not drain. But if I open the cover, then close it, the water drains immediately.

Am I looking at a stuck valve, sock in the pump, bad relay? Clues, hints? I'm trying to avoid having a repair man come out. They tend to be 1/2 the cost of a new one just to come by and look.

Selling Collectible Dolls

When I was little, I knew I wanted to be an actress, and the person who sparked that initial love was Marylin Monroe. As a gift, to encourage my dream, my parents bought me the full 6 doll set of DSI Marylin Monroe collectors dolls. I love my dolls, and they mean a lot to me, but I need to sell them now to help pay for school so I can pursue that dream.

But I don't really know where or how to sell them. I know there is always ebay, but I worry that they will not go to a person who will cherish them or that I will have to break up the collection. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to find actual collectors and try find a loving home for these treasures? This is a picture of the back, it has all six pictured
