Lucky (Labrador Retriever X)
This is a picture of Lucky.
She is about 4 months old in this picture. She is 8 months old now.
She is a mixed Lab.
Lucky was a dog that someone had evidently dumped out at the elementary school where I teach.
Everyday she was there and the kids shared their lunches and played with her. She would be so sad when recess was over and the kids lined up to go inside!
After about 2 weeks, the dog was getting bigger and a little more rowdy, she nipped (she was begining to teethe) while playing with a third grade boy. The principal said she would have to call animal control.
This broke my heart so the dog came home with me. My husband and I agreed her name should be named Lucky. Afterall, she is 'lucky' I was there to rescue her!

Charcoal (Persian Cat)
Charcoal is a 7 yr. old Persian Cat.
He was born and lived on the back porch at my Grandma's house and my Mother told me to pick one of the kittens out and take home for my birthday present that year. So, I picked Charcoal and was able to get him because he was too little to run very fast. I put him in a cardboard box and took him home in my truck.
What does he like to do for fun? Charcoal likes to play with the fake mouse for fun. I throw it and he runs after it and brings it back to me and I throw it again. It's really good exercise for him.

Male Ruby-Throat Hummingbird
This photo was taken in my backyard. I use nectar feeders to attract hummingbirds. I also have Cape Honeysuckle, Bleedingheart, and other flowers that Hummingbirds enjoy.
This little one perched in my pine tree just long enough to satisfy an itch.
Photographing these fast little birds is easy once you spend some time watching their approach to their source of food. I have found that they will most often approach in the same way, this makes it easy to be ready to snap off a shot!

Today's Tips
Body Fitness Before Surgery
I am going in for another back surgery in a few months. I got a real good deal on a temporary membership at the health club after I explained my surgery to them. I suggest this for anyone going into surgery. I am going to go in every day and do low impact leg and arm exercises, then spend time in the hot tub. I'm so weak right now, it would take me twice as long to recover if I didn't tone up a bit.

Where in the World Do I Even Start to Get Organized?
Organization is what everybody wants. How do we do that? The first thing is to decide that there will have to be some hard decisions agreed upon. You can't have all your decor out at the same time. You can't keep everything. If you haven't used it and it doesn't fit, get rid of it. One way would be to do one room at a time. You have to do three things. Think of NEED, STORE, TOSS. Absolutely everything has to fit into one of those categories. Label boxes well. Your reward is that you can now get Other decor and favorite things out and display them. After all, You've missed them, haven't you.

Budget and Finance for Teens
Tips to help teens learn about budgetting and finance. Post your ideas.
Budget and finance are a shock to young people just starting out. I suggest parents have their child start a checking account in their senior year of high school and learn to balance their statement. They should use the check books that have the copy slips, so they can see what checks they have written. Encourage them to prioritize. It's a great thing to learn, if not a shocking experience. But it's the first thing they need to know about budgeting

Container Gardening
Make sure your plants that are in containers have good drainage. Add a few chunks of charcoal to keep the standing water fresh. Keep them out of the hot afternoon sun, the pots can over heat and cook the roots. Coffee filters can be the first thing to put in the pot to keep soil from eroding away. When the roots start growing out the bottom, it time to go one size up in pots.

Covering Stains on a Quilt
I bought an old quilt at a yard sale. It had several stains around the edges that would not come out. I quilt myself, so I searched through my material and found very similar scraps and one identical. I cut different shapes from these scraps and sewed them over the stains. I added more than needed, for effect. The end result looked like the original quilter just left some scraps laying about. Lovely!

Damp Towel Joke
One day a child at my four-year-old's preschool class told her classmates that she needed a damp towel. Some of the other kids thought she said a naughty word and told on her. The teacher stepped in to explain, "If your mommy asked you to bring her a damp towel, what does she want?" A little girl blurted out, "She means she wants that towel right now!"

Fourth Of July Safety For Pets
Water your yard to prevent fire works from setting fire to the grass and perhaps the car or the house. Keep the pets inside. It's the worst day of the year for pets. Dogs run off more often on the Fourth of July than any other day.
By Ardis Barnes
Editor's Note: Although this tip is too late for this year it will be helpful for next year. I lost a dog years ago on the 4th and was never able to find her.
Make sure your pet has a tag with his/her name on it and your phone number. You can make your own at PetSmart or Petco for about $6. I've found pets and have been able to return them to their home quickly if they have a tag.
Also, we noticed this year that a couple fans running on high helped calm our dog and masked the sound of the fireworks. She was less anxious than she was last Fourth of July.

Tips for Dealing with Spam
Here are some ideas to help you deal with spam. Post your ideas.
Changing your e-mail address once in a while is a good idea. In fact, I have found that using a different name and e-mail address for certain types of sites is safer than using the same name and address and password for everything. It cuts down on the danger of ID theft. And it sure cuts down on the junk email.

Opening Jars - Opening Those Hard to Open Jars
My Grandmother Had Arthritis
Therefore, she had a hard time opening lids from glass jars. She would take the thickest rubber band she had, wrap it around the lip of the lid, and it popped open every time without much effort.

Lending Books
I lend my books a lot and in order to remember who has what book I remove the dust jacket and place a post it note on the inside with the person's name and the date. I then place the jacket back in my bookcase. This enables me to remember who has my book and how long they have had it. Also, don't forget to write your name inside the book so whoever has it will know who to return it to.

Decoupage Newspapers on a Wall
I am embarking on a huge collage project, with hundreds of newspaper pictures. I have 3 questions.
Is there a substance (like varnish or polyurethene) that I can use instead of decoupage medium. For the size of my project I would spend a fortune on mod podge, and am looking for an alternative.
Also, will any of the 'glue' mediums prevent the newspaper photos from yellowing? I will go with the more expensive glue if it will prevent yellowing.
And finally, rather than glue the pictures directly to my garage walls, is there some sort of backer board that I might use, that is inexpensive, and that won't eventually damage the newspaper photos from behind.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Problem Replacing Outlets in my Bathroom
I decided to replace the outlets in my bathroom to GFCI. I made sure to follow the installing instructions very carefully. However, after my installation, the outlet is not providing power. I checked the power line and it is receiving power. But when I plug in a device in the outlet it does not work.
I also noticed the "Test" button is stuck but the green LED is not on! I tried to push the reset button but it is not resetting. Any help to trouble shoot this will be very much appreciated. I spent hours working on this and I am ready to give up.

"Grows in a Minute" Vines
Has anyone heard of a vine called "Grows in a Minute"? I knew a person in Macon GA that had it years ago and wish I had gotten more information. As I recall, she had it trailing up fishing line from the ground to the edge of a deck.
She said it grew 12" to 18" a day. I think when it bloomed it had small purple (maybe white) flowers. Looked a bit like a minature morning glory bloom.
Any help would be welcomed!

An Introduction to Lasagna Gardening
By Ellen Brown Lasagna gardening isn't about growing lasagna, and it isn't about growing the great vegetables and herbs found in lasagna recipes. Instead, lasagna gardening is a timesaving organic gardening method developed by gardener and writer, Patricia Lanza, which requires no digging, no tilling and no sod removal. Too good to be true?
