Isis and Belle (Malamute and American Eskimo)

Isis is a 6 year old Malamute and Belle is a 4 year old American Eskimo. I got Isis from my uncle and got Belle from a no kill shelter.

They like going for walks, they love the beach, going camping, going to the park. They are wonderful loving dogs and I don't know what I would do without them. This is Isis peeking behind the blinds while I am out back and Belle is standing outside in front of her

Sasha (Boxer/Hound) and Loki (Treeing Walker Hound)

Sasha is 2 years old and is a Boxer Hound mix. Loki is 6 months old and is a Treeing Walker Hound. We got them from the Summit County Animal Shelter.

They like hiking, playing with the kids, chasing each other, and jumping on the trampoline with the kids!

Both of our dogs are very sweet and friendly. They love the kids and are very protective of all of us!

We are lucky enough to live where dogs are loved, every store has one for a mascot, and every resident has one for companionship! They even have their own park and doggie bakery! It's called the Barkery, clever huh!

If it is just to take a walk, or going camping, or whatever adventure we go on as a family, the doggies are there to share in the adventure.

Sasha will sit at the door or window and cry when the kids leave and will do this until they come home. She is a worry wart!

Loki is still molding his personality but he is very smart and has taken to Jade, our youngest daughter.

Pictures shown are, 1st one is Sasha and Alyssa and the 2nd one is Loki being cute!

Today's Tips:

Have House Inspected Before Buying

With the bad U.S. economy, more houses are now for sale. If shopping for a home, if it was pre-owned, inquire about the sewer, plumbing and if it has a septic tank. Have the seller get the septic tank pumped out before you purchase the property. Have an inspection done on the electrical, all the plumbing and on the home, in general (roof, siding, termite damage, mold, caulking around the windows, and seals around the doors, if it has an attic fan, attic insulation, etc.)

Natural Bee Sting Remedies

Here are some natural bee sting remedies:

  • Mix baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and water, adjusting until it makes a paste. Apply and leave it on the skin for 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Apply a fresh slice of garlic or onion. These alliums also work internally, so they can be eaten as well.

  • Calendula flower and plantain leaf are two effective plant remedies for bee stings. Again, rub the flower or leaf directly on the skin.

Short Term Cover for a Wet Paint Brush

Instead of washing out your paint brush every time, use a zippy bag, cut off a small bit of one of the bottom corners. Slip the handle of your paint brush through the hole. Pull it until the plastic fits snuggly around the handle. Then close the top and "voila!", airtight until you are ready to use it again.

This is not for long term storage of brushes (unless cleaned thoroughly first).

Freeze Glow In The Dark Items

Glow sticks and necklaces are popular on the Fourth of July, but they glow for only about four hours after activation. Instead of just letting them run out, put them in the freezer. It interrupts the glow, & will resume glowing after a 5 - 10 minute thaw. Then the fun toy will last much longer!

Baking Soda and Ammonia to Unclog Drains

I came across a great money-saving, cleaning tip that I thought I'd share. Instead of using store-bought drain opener, it is cheaper to use baking soda and ammonia with lemon to unclog drains. It is also best to treat sinks and bath tubs monthly to help keep them under control.

Berry Freezer Jam

On Saturday, June 14, my husband and I went to a farm not far from where we live and picked blackberries for about an hour. As youngsters we both remember picking wild berries with our family on the side of the road. We had to deal with thorns and snakes. It was a joy picking berries at this farm and not having to worry about those situations. The bushes are planted in rows and most are thornless.

Once we ate our fill of the berries we made freezer jam. Freezer jam is so good and so easy to do. We made three batches of pure blackberry jam and then we had enough berries for only a half of a batch. So we mixed those berries with strawberries. YUM! YUM! Very good!

Here are directions and information on making the freezer jam: You need to get the small jars especially for freezer jam because the jam needs to be eaten pretty quickly after it's taken out of the freezer. You can get the jars at Wal Mart or even the grocery store. What is so nice about freezer jam is that you don't have to worry about the jars sealing. And since you don't cook the fruit, I think you get more of a fresh fruit flavor.

Making Freezer Jam

Blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries work well in uncooked freezer jam recipes. You must store uncooked jams in the refrigerator or freezer. You can hold them for several weeks in a refrigerator, and up to a year in the freezer. If you keep them at room temperature they will mold or ferment in a short time. Once you open the container, keep refrigerated and use the jam within a few days, no longer than three weeks.

Sort and wash fully ripe fruit. Drain. Remove caps and stems from berries and crush.

The basic recipe for uncooked jam is:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups crushed berries (about one and 1/2 quarts of berries)
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 1 package powdered pectin (Sure Jell)
  • 1 cup cold water

To Make the Jam

Measure three cups of prepared fruit into a large mixing bowl. Add the sugar, mix well, and let stand for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Dissolve the Sure Jell in one cup cold water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for one minute. Add pectin solution to the fruit and sugar mixture. Stir vigorously for two minutes.

Pour the jam into clean freezer containers or canning jars, leaving one-half inch headspace. Cover the containers and let stand for 24 hours, or until the jam has set and become firm. This quantity makes about seven or eight half-pint jars or freezer containers. When jam comes out of the freezer, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Enjoy!!

***DO NOT PUREE THE BERRIES. They need to be crushed or they will be too "juicy".***

Good Tasting Tap Water Instead of Bottled Water

I was buying bottled water because I didn't like the taste of the water coming out of the faucet until I set it out for 24 hours. Now it tastes the same as bottled water and I've saved lots of money.

To do:

1. Fill old OJ, milk, or water gallon jugs with cold tap water.

2. Set beside the fridge and let it sit for 24 hours (outside of the fridge, not inside)

3. Rotate stock - I have 5 jugs of water and I rotate them every time one is filled (so the newer water is in the back and the water that has been sitting for over 24 hours is in the front and ready to go in the fridge when one jug is empty). I keep 2 gallons in the fridge and 3 outside the fridge (and this is for two adults and some pets).

How does this work? I believe it's because when you set it out over 24 hours the chlorine leaves the water, making it taste wonderful!

I give my cats and dogs water from these jugs as well. I'm sure they can taste the difference and since it's hot out, they are enjoying the cold water.

I hope this tip helps someone else save money too!

Source: Source: Living on a dime newsletter suggested drinking water from the tap instead of buying it and the rest of the information is my own.

Gas Grill with a Low Flame

When cooking on a gas grill, if the flame isn't as high as you think it should be, use the wooden end of a wire brush and tap the regulator, in case you have dirt or grease in the line. This may solve the problem of the low flame and keep you from having to purchase a new regulator.

You Can Grow Veggies Anywhere

Even if you don't have much money you can still enjoy organic vegetables and fruit if you grow your own. If you live in a flat you can grow herbs on the window sill in pots. Runner beans can be grown on a balcony, they can be trained round the balcony rails. Cucumbers can be trained in the same way. Carrots grow really well in big pots, so do cabbages and potatoes.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Three elderly men are at the doctor's office for a memory test. The doctor asks the first man, "What is three times three?" "274," came the reply.

The doctor rolls his eyes and looks up at the ceiling, and says to the second man, "It's your turn. What is three times three?"

"Tuesday," replies the second man. The doctor shakes his head sadly, then asks the third man, "Okay, your turn. What's three times three?"

"Nine," says the third man.

"That's great!" says the doctor. "How did you get that?"

"Simple," he says, "just subtract 274 from Tuesday."

Gnats on Houseplants

When pouring coffee in large potted plants where I work, a swarm of gnats (tiny fruit flies, I think) fly up from the soil! This has become a serious problem. These pests get into the bread, donut, and danish servers. The exterminator set out the unsightly cardboard glue traps and sprayed the area, but that didn't help at all. Is there some kind of homemade concoction I can mix up and spray directly onto the soil to kill the bugs, but not harm the plants? We also have the red flying roaches with the thin wings. Exterminator didn't help this either. Never had these problems before. Has anyone tried something that works?

Is My Couch Dirty?

I purchased a cream color microfiber couch at Roomstore just a 3 months ago. I spilled a tiny bit of water on it and noticed that the wet spot looked black. It looked like I had smeared some black ink on it or something. The spot faded away once the water spot dried. However, it bothers me to think that my couch is really dirty. Is this the case? If so, how do I clean it? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Getting Rid of Pantry Beetles

I have a problem with the PANTRY BEETLE and their LARVE. My problem however is that they are all over my home especially in the bathrooms, and laundry room. I have some in the kitchen area, but clean out my pantry every two weeks (take out the old and put in the new) and have never (knock on wood) found any in there or in our food. How do I kill these pests, and why are they so bad in the bathrooms?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Lethargic Cockatiel

My family and I are taking care of a cockatiel for a couple months. We realized he was sneezing but not much we could do about it but keep him warm. He was fine until a few days ago, when he began to act really lethargic. He wouldn't whistle or chirp or anything. Only today we found some green substance on his head and on his beak. It's green, and strings on top of his head where it smears on his cheek. Is this fluid from his nose?

My parents believe it could just be feces that he rubbed into his head. Though I have a hard time believing that right now. He has many of the symptoms of an ill bird - such as fluffing of feathers, sleeping, shivering time to time. My dad thinks it's because he's molting. I'm not so sure. I know the answer is take him to the vet. But anyone know what we're dealing with? Please help, and thank you.

My Dog's Tumor

I have made a terrible error in judgment. About 1 year ago my female rottie was 8 years. old. She developed a lump about the size of a walnut on her side. My vet stated that; 1) her age is against her for being a good candidate for surgery, 2) if we do operate to remove the tumor,we may find cancer everywhere inside her, and 3) it felt like soft tissue to him but he did leave it up to my decision.

Well being selfish and fearful of losing her during surgery and her not showing discomfort, I had chosen not to operate to remove. My vet told me lots of dogs live fine with such a tumor and never have operation.

It is now approx. 1 year into this and the tumor has grown very slightly but I am thinking... so just what the heck are we supposed to do now, as the tumor has grown a bit. What are we supposed to just let it grow and grow?

I have very little money to pay for care for my best friend and I hate myself right now but I do think we (we is me and her) should try to do something for her before this thing grows who knows how big, even if it wasn't life threatening.
Any suggestions?

The Lures of Advertising
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

Advertising may seem entertaining, we may come in from the kitchen to see the latest commercial, but it's job is to sell products, and it does this very well. From the day early man decided to sell his carved wooden tool to another man, advertising has been a part of our lives. It may seem honest at times, but beneath it all are the great parables of advertising, and the more we as consumers are aware of them the less we'll fall into their traps.
