Wildlife: Eastern Tiger Salamander My husband found this outside our front door, and had to bring it in to show the boys. It is an eastern tiger salamander. The white milky spots on the tail is toxin that is secreted as a means of protection from possible predators. By Mrstock from NE Iowa Contest Contender!

Halloween: Pirate Costume (Jack Sparrow) This costume was made from items around the house and thrift store buys, costing pennies to make. Any black pants will do, an adult black sweater with arms cut off for the vest, a striped piece of fabric for the sash and a belt. I cut an old white adult size blouse for bagginess, tied a red scarf for the headband with a few beads strung through it. The hair was the easy part, being a wig, I could braid it easily with the beads, without having my son sit through it. The mustache was penciled on and I ended up doing the beard too since it was more comfortable and it looked just as good. Add a dollar store sword and voila! By Ginette from Mount Albert

Rate It: Halloween: Partly Cloudy Costume Talk about a frugal, quick, inexpensive costume, this is it! Take any plain, solid-colored sweatshirt (preferably dark), glue or use double-stick tape to adhere some white pillow stuffing a little below the neck of the shirt (in the shape of a cloud), then fill a spray bottle of water and take an umbrella with you. When asked what you are, open the umbrella, spray the person lightly with water from the bottle, and announce: "I'm partly cloudy, with a chance of rain!" By

Rate It: Mimzy Marie Blue (Grey and White Tuxedo) Mimzy Marie Blue is a 2 year old grey and white tuxedo cat. We found Mimzy in our local classifieds October 2007 and fell in love the first time we saw her. Which at that time Mimzy was only 3 1/3 weeks old. Needless to say we had to wait a few weeks before we could bring her home to meet her feline sisters, Mittens and Monazy. Mimzy absolutely loves to talk to the birds and squirrels outside of our livingroom or kitchen windows. She can, spend most of her day, going back and forth between those windows giving them a piece of her mind! She also likes playing Hide-seek with Mittens & Monazy. She is so precious when she is sleeping. By mejb47 from Des Moines, IA Contest Contender!

Mr. Bentlee is a 7 months old pure bred Labrador. We purchased our Bentlee from a breeder in Texas so he took his first and only plane ride in May when he was about 12 weeks old. If anyone has seen "Marley and Me" then they will know all about what a lab likes to do for fun. Our Mr. Bentlee is all lab. He loves to run and play fetch. He really loves to chew anything and everything. And his favorite thing to do is to grab whatever he can off the counter and run away with it wanting you to chase him. Bentlee was the least expensive puppy in the litter so we also call him our clearance puppy. By Ecantrell from Savannah, GA Contest Contender!

I noticed some people giving advice to help manage and rid fleas naturally on their pets and homes. Unfortunately many mentioned garlic, it may be o.k. for dogs, I am not really sure, but garlic is very hazardous to cats. So please take precaution. By Deedee10 from NY, NY Contest Contender!

Need a large scoop say for bird feed or or something else? Save those laundry detergent jugs. Just wash out the empty container and be sure to keep the lid. Draw a line where you are going to cut away the opening of your scoop on the bottom of the jug from the bottom of the handle toward the bottom front corner in an oval shape. Remember you can always make it bigger, try cutting a small hole until you get an idea of what you are getting done. I angle mine from the handle toward the bottom front corner. Be sure to leave the handle of the jug for your handle. Depending on what they are going to be used for they make great funnels also. We use one to put gas in the lawn mower by removing the lid and cutting the bottom off. The handle is so "handy". Some jugs have a ready made pour spout. Source: By necessity. I figured it out after spilling the bird feed one to many times. By Latrtatr from Loup City, NE Contest Contender!

Use Adjustable Chair for Low Work DH and I are in our 70's and a few years ago, he went on a remodeling rampage. He did all the floors in our condo as well as many other things. When he was putting down the ceramic tile in the living room, I suggested he take the task chair from the computer desk and put it on the lowest level. Then he could just roll around without having to get up and down so much as he finished an area. He said it was a great idea. I also use this chair when I clean the oven and the lower shelves of the fridge. By MartyD from Houston, TX Contest Contender!

I have a tip for children bickering. I have passed this tip along and had reports back at how amazing the results. I used this until my children were grown and now my grandkids get a dose. Have the 2 kids that are bickering, either sit on the couch facing each other or stand facing each other with the tip of their noses touching for a set amount of time (not as long as time out). Who gets the front seat? No problem but they have to sit with their noses touching. My daughter and son both agree that they would refrain from arguing because they did not want to have to stand or sit that way. Most of the time giggling would happen before the time was up and they were friends again. By Notwrong from FL Contest Contender!

Restoring Whites Washed With Red Clothing I accidentally washed two of my husband's white shirts with a red sheet, and of course they turned pink. Somebody told me to use Rit dye remover, but the store was out. So I bought Carbona. I followed the directions on the box and like magic the shirts are now white again. It works wonders! I have talked to all my family and friends who are on my usual Christmas list, and shared my plans for this Christmas. They all love the idea, and plan to do the same, so I thought I would share it with ya'll! I am going to recycle Christmas, and you can too! I am going to do all my major shopping at yard sales and Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the like, and also some charities such as the Humane Society. I have asked everyone to do the same when buying a gift for me. Why? First of all, my adult children are where I was twenty years ago, when Santa was hard enough on my wallet. If they can give a gift from the heart without being ashamed of it not being new, that is what counts. The Salvation Army will use the money to help someone else Goodwill DOES NOT provide any sort of disaster relief or charity, by the way; they only "train people for work" I learned this during Hurricane Katrina ,when I asked the Goodwill regional manager why the Salvation Army shelves were empty, but it was business as usual at Goodwill. Anyway, recycling Christmas also makes it possible for us to donate more to others in need and still have joy in our hearts, not over what we received, but because of what we gave. After all, isn't that the REAL meaning of Christmas? Let's recycle it as well, it's about time! Source: Remembering what it is like By dollyslaffn from Darien, GA Contest Contender!

Be a Greener Reader
If you like to read, you might be interested to know that it takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 trees to print 1,000 books. At first glance this may not sound like much, but consider the fact that about 3 billion books are sold each year worldwide. Add in the electricity, water, greenhouse gases, pollutants and landfill space needed to produce each book, and suddenly you have a low-key activity with a high environmental impact. Here are some ways you can be a greener reader.
