Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Three, Number 112, August 24, 2004
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

Another busy day on ThriftyFun yesterday. Everything seems to be humming along. Our new server will be delivered on Wednesday and we plan on installing it on Friday which should really make the website fast. We are going to try to keep the Daily shorter than yesterday's issue since some ISPs didn't like the file size, we have removed the "Active Topics" section to help cut down on the size. Instead, we encourage you to frequent our Active Topic Board which can be found here:

http://www.thriftyfun.com/board.html

Thanks for reading,

Susan

Today's Tips

Trash Cans for Sorting Clothing

To make laundry sorting easier and faster I have a blue 10 gallon trash can for blue jeans, a white one for whites, and a green one for everything else. It wasn't hard training my children to use them either (even the 17 year old!) By Angie Ferguson

Saving Money on Paper Towels

My kids used way too many paper towels for small spills, so I began buying napkins. They are "single serving" so my boys don't use half a roll. And paper napkins are cheaper than paper towels. I can buy a 200 napkin pack for a dollar at the dollar store. Paper towels cost 50-75 cents for a 40 sheet roll.

Recipe For Happiness

Get Your Life Cooking. Feel like you're simmering on the stove of life? Well we've cooked up the perfect recipe for you. The best part is that all the ingredients for a good life are easily within reach.

You'll need...

1 part of knowing who you are
1 part of knowing who you aren't
1 part of knowing what you want
1 part of knowing who you wish to be
1 part of knowing what you already have before you
1 part of choosing wisely from what you have before you
1 part of loving and thanking for ALL you have ("bad" included)

Mixing Instructions:

Combine ingredients together gently and carefully. Using Faith and vision, mix together with strong belief of the outcome, until finely blended. Use thoughts, words and actions for best results. Repeat.

Yields unlimited servings!

Using it All: Mustard

When down to the bottom of your mustard add a little vinegar with some Italian seasoning and make a great dressing with that last little bit.

Let Your Kids Draw on the Other Side of Paper

Don't throw away computer paper that has been used on one side! My kids love to use this paper for drawing, etc. Also, I use the paper in my computer printer when I print out things like grocery lists, eBay transactions, test print pages, etc. This save a lot of money and trees! By Angela

Tooth Fairy Tip

When my oldest son was little and lost a tooth, I really wanted to be sure that he believed in the tooth fairy, I put glitter from his pilllow to the window. I took his tooth and left a dollar. I still have all of his baby teeth and now he helps with this trick for his little brother. He thinks it is fairy dust, easy to clean up. By Dawn

Frugal Deli Fried Chicken

Often, grocery stores will drastically lower the price of deli fried chicken towards closing time (most times, you have to ask.) They are usually a little dry by then. If you make a nice sauce, (i.e. marsala, tomato, lemon etc.) and simmer the pieces in the sauce for a few minutes, they perk right up and make a delicious dinner. You can cut the breasts into smaller pieces for more absorption. I usually serve mine with pasta or rice, and toss in some lightly sauted onions and/or veggies. By Doggy

Thrifty Uses for Salt

Too many suds in your dishwater? Sprinkle a little salt on them and they will subside in no time.

Use salt to clean your cutting board. Just sprinkle a little on a wet cutting board and scrub. There usually is a shaker of salt handy in the kitchen, you don't have to just use it for food.

Spilled some grease? When you spill some grease on your counter or stove top sprinkle a little salt on it and it will be easier to clean up.

Salt for carpet stains. Sprinkle salt on carpet stains, let sit for an hour and vacuum the salt up.

Salt for perspiration stains. Make strong salt water by diluting 1 cup salt to each gallon of water and soak shirts with perspiration stains. Or if you don't want to use as much salt you can create a solution with 4 Tablespoons salt and 1 quart of water and apply this solution directly to the perspiration stain with a rag.

What are your salt uses? Post them here:

Break The Chain - Don't Forward "Drug Costs" Email

I received a forwarded email about the cost of prescription drugs last night from a relative. There was a person mentioned in the bottom of the email from a government office so I wrote her and asked if she could verify what was in the email. She told me that it was just something that she had forwarded on and now was considered the source of the information. She receives lots of emails a day about it.

Turning Trash Into Cash
By Jeffrey Strain

Junk. We all have some of it lying around the house. Whether it's boxed items cluttering the attic or everyday items that just don't fit with the room's decorating theme anymore, many of us have more than we need. At some point it all gets to be too much and in a fit of energy we decide that our place needs to be cleaned. Then the junk gets moved, typically to the nearest trash can. But wait. Before you throw out all that stuff, it pays to take head of the saying "one person's junk is another person's treasure."

An Organized Home
By Crystal Miller

An organized home is such a blessing. Organization is an ongoing process and I believe is usually a continuing 'work in progress' in our lives. I don't think anyone could say, "Well now my life is all organized and I am done!". Because our homes are in constant use and life is always changing from month to month and season to season, the way we organize our lives has to accommodate this. We may find that what worked great at one time now is not working anymore. Maybe you have more children or maybe you changes something in your home or what you thought would work great in theory does not work great in practice. But whatever the reason that is part of the process.
