Today's Photo Contest Entries
Tootie (Unknown Breed)
Meet our dog Tootie. He's a stray dog my wife found deep in our back
woods recently. She doesn't normally pick up strays, but she said
that this dog kept staring at her like he was trying to say something.
Actually, the dog makes me feel uncomfortable because all he does is
stare at me all day long. Anybody want a dog?

Baby Oil for Shaving
In cold weather when my skin is especially dry, I shave my legs and underarms using baby oil instead of soap or shaving cream. It makes my razor last forever, and my skin is super soft. Also works on faces for the guys! One caution: Be careful if using the baby oil in tub or shower, as it does make for a slippery surface.

Mechanic and a Surgeon Joke
A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in his shop.
The surgeon was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage. "Hey Doc, can I ask you a question?"
The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle.
The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So, how come I get such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"
The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic...."Try doing it with the engine running.."

Using Leftover Oven Heat From the Oven
After I'm done using my oven and have turned it off, I leave the oven door fully open to help warm my kitchen in winter months. Some of that warm air drifts to other rooms on the main floor of my house.

Editor's Note: If you have curious pets or little children, you will just want to open the door a little ways.

Comforting Puppies and Kittens
Want to comfort a puppy or kitten going through separation anxiety? Get one pair of mens socks, fill one with rice (not instant) and sew shut, then cover with other sock. Put in microwave for 3 minutes (until warm) and place in a "C" shape in puppy/kitten crate.
They will curl up to it like it is a mommy and the rice holds warmth for a few hours. When it gets dirty slip off the cover sock, put it in the wash, and then put it back on. I use this trick with my foster puppy and kittens.

Teaching Your Children About Money
This is for those with kids in the 'tween years.
My daughter couldn't understand why daddy's pay while it sounded like a lot when you said the total, really wasn't.
Say the total is $300. 'Well, MOM! that Jesse McCartney CD is only 16 dollars!' she may say.
This is what I did:
I got out the Monopoly money, made $300 in 50's 20s and 10s. and one 100.
I told her the weekly expenses, groceries, gas, water bill, electric bill etc. I told her to give me the amount for each bill, taking away from the $300 she had.
When I got done, the amount that remained was considerably less. I said, 'Now, the rest is for your lunch money, and things we don't figure for. I explained that incidentals almost always come up, and what was left had to last until next pay day.
She was at the age at that time (14) to understand what the point I was trying to make. She did not like it, but she understood it.
Seeing is believing. Just telling them sometimes just isn't enough, but SHOWING them often pops that light bulb of understanding.

Washing Machine Touch Panels Wear Out
Someone had mentioned giving the clothes washer an extra spin at the end to get rid of water, thinking that it would lessen drying time. Figured I'd better mention that I used to do just that, and wore out my electronic panel. The repairman said that the electronic finger tip touch panels are not as durable as the old twist and turn dials. An expensive lesson.

Computer Infections - Removing Spyware From Your Computer
Is your computer running slowly or having a slew of pop-up ads popping up all the time, even when you're not on-line? It is probably infected with spyware or adware. These are programs that one can pick up in the course of surfing the web and downloading programs. Spyware spies on your computer use and reports back to its programmer and adware plasters ads on your screen. If you're having these problems there are three FREE programs you can use to clean off your system.
1) Spybot S&D at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
2) Ad-Aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
3) a beta (test program) at Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx .
The Microsoft program will only work if you have a legal copy of Win 2000 or XP.
Each program catches things the others don't, so it's best to get all three. (It's free, after all!) If you keep them updated and scan your system regularly, you'll find that your computer runs much faster.
(I don't work for any of these companies, but I am a Librarian. We use these programs on our computers regularly and they really help keep our computers functioning.)

Decorating Candles
I love candles. When I am decorating for an event or a holiday, I like to use candles. I always have a bunch of cheap white candles lying around. I like to spice them up with some glue and glitter. I use white school glue and paint the sides of the candle with it and then roll it in different colored glitter, depending on what I need. It's cute and it looks good too! Great centerpiece!

Stretching Butter With Olive Oil
You can stretch your butter by making it into a butter spread. Use 1 cup warm water, 1 cup light olive oil, 1 tsp. granulated lecithin (let water and oil mix and found at health food stores.) 1/2 to 1 tsp. salt according to taste. Let butter soften first. Mix water, salt, and lecithin granules. Add oil and butter cut into smaller pieces. Blend together with mixer until smooth. Store in smaller containers in fridge. Will harden with refrigeration but is very soft if left out. Good Luck

Maintaining your candles & candle holders
By Bijou in Texas
Here are some tips for getting the most out of your candles and candle holders without a lot of fuss:
- Always cut the wick of the candle to 1/8 of an inch before lighting and allow the candle to burn long enough so that the hot wax extends to touch the candleholder on all sides. This will ensure that the candle burns down evenly which will maximize the length of time your candle will burn. Cut the wick every time you light your candle.
- Keep your candle away from drafts. Drafty areas will cause the wick to dance back and forth. Smoke will then emit from the wick and could cause soot stains on your candle holders.
- Always make sure you use the appropriate sized candle for the holder. Never, for example, burn a votive candle in a tea light holder. This can cause glass or crystal holders to break from excess heat.
- Do not ever use anything that wasn't meant to be a candleholder to burn a candle in/on. Again, this could cause breakage or even explosion.
- Burn candles down as much as possible to eliminate the need to rid your candleholders of excess melted wax.
- Remember that the longer you let melted candles sit in a holder, the more difficult it will be to remove the wax.
Save yourself the trouble by taking care of the problem straight away. As soon as you notice that the candle has burned down to a point that you won't burn it anymore, snuff the wick and allow the wax to become solid.
Place the holder in the freezer. Placing the cup/holder upside down is ideal.
After about 10-15 minutes you should be able to take the holder out, give the holder a little smack on the bottom with the palm of your hand and the candle should pop right out.
If it does not pop out and/or if you have waited a while before trying to take the wax out of your holder, take a wax scraper or a butter knife and begin to cut into the candle in a straight line. Before you have gotten halfway down, the candle should pop right out.
* Those rubbery washable butter knives they sell at the supermarket are ideal to use to protect your holder from nicks and scratches.
- In order to maximize your candles and protect your property you should always read the labels! Burning a pillar candle is very different from burning a candle that is contained in a glass jar.
- Also remember to keep candles out of the reach of pets and children. Wax isn't easily removed from some surfaces and fires that could result from misuse can be disastrous!
Good luck and happy burning!
