Craft: Cigar Box Decoupage

I get cigar boxes for free at the local newsroom. I subscribe to a few magazines pertaining to things that interest me; ocean beach scenes and seascapes, art and design, photography etc.

I rip out pieces of the pages depicting what I want to feature and overlap the pieces artfully on the boxes. Spray polyeurethane and voila, a beautiful box for keepsakes or storage.

Webster is 13 years old medium, soft orange fur cat. Webster belonged to my husband before we got married. He likes to sit by the window and watch the birds and squirrels.

Garden: Peony Photos

I simply love peonies! Their beauty in the Spring and their fragrance just warms my heart!
I use the typical peony rings to support those big beautiful blooms, but I also use medium size round tomato cages. I spray painted them green and put them in place in April before the plant gets too tall. Over the years as the peony widens I just put a 2nd cage next to the other. They stay in place all summer because the leaves of the peony hide the cage. The cages are a bit taller than the typical peony rings, which helps hold their blooms up high! A proud flower I'd say!

Craft Project: Birdbath Recycled With Love

Don't throw out that leaking bird bath! Make it into your own work of art. And that old chipped plate, you didn't know what to do with, can adorn your masterpiece. My piece is in memory of my Irish grandmother, Kay. I had a few of her old yellow rose plates which I fondly remember having meals on as a child, which also brings back memories of staying with her on summer vacation.

Today's Tips:

Use Egg Cartons to Prop Vegetables in the Garden

Use egg cartons to prop your vegetables up out of the dirt in your garden when they get too heavy. I had a squash laying in the dirt and was trying to think what to use to prop it up as it continued to grow. I cut 2 egg cups from an egg carton and placed it under the squash - outside up. Now it is high and dry. You could stake the egg carton in place with a skewer if needed.

Product Review: Bissell Cleanview 11 (Bagless)

Product: Vacuum Cleaner

Model: Bissell Cleanview 11 (Bagless)

Manufacturer: Bissell

Cost: $89 plus tax at K Mart

I love this vacuum. I have a Kirby that went out, and I got tired of repairing it each time because it always cost me $24.00 to repair. I am so proud of this vacuum. I have lots of animals and it gets all the hair up. I was worried it wouldn't be very good, but wow was I surprised! I give it a 5 star rating!

That with my Wondermop and Swiffer that I make my own Swiffer pads for and cleaner is all I need to keep my carpets and floors clean!

Use Plastic Grocery Bags for Packing Material

My daughter and I regularly post parcels. I found a very cheap way to pack breakables, all I do is wrap the article then pack all around it with plastic shopping bags. Very cheap to use and weighs hardly anything, therefore you are not wasting precious money on packing material, so you can afford to add in that extra little special something.

Stiffening Silk Flowers for Projects

If you are making a craft projects with silk flowers, you can stiffen them, and still keep their bright color, by using the strongest hair spray you can find. In the USA I like to use the "Got2B" brand because it's so very stiff and strong, but a dollar-store brand will also work.

Pop flower heads off the stems, then while holding the back of the flower with your hand, spray first the back then the front, totally saturating the flower. Lay flower on a nonstick surface to dry. My favorite way to dry the flowers is to lay them on a wire shelf, but in the summer I like to set them in the sun on top of the grass with the top of the flower facing up.

Keeping Dogs from Digging

Our chihuahuas kept digging the dirt up around their pen (a chain link fence). We found that sprinkling chili pepper around the edges of the fence stopped them from doing it.

Reapply after it rains for best results.

Online Banking Advice

To help keep track of internet banking, I keep a special page in my agenda dedicated to all my banking transactions done online; date, which account, amount, and the reference number. That way I don't need to print them out and have it right beside me ready to use. It does not reveal any pin numbers or full account numbers and so is safe in that regard.

Removing Pet Urine Smell From Carpet

I have been overwhelmed by the horrible smell in my carpet! I have steamed, used baking soda, enzyme sprayed, etc. with no success.

I have since decided to use previously used coffee grounds. I have read that it works miracles on many things! I took dried coffee grinds sprinkled all over smelly areas. I left it on overnight.

I vacuumed this morning. The smell is going away! It is still faint; but I can sit on the couch and not feel sick to my stomach!.

I would recommend using this for several days. (I will let you know if it goes away!) I already notice the area where I ran out of grinds. It smells. I look forward to drying out more grinds from this mornings brew! It does need to be repeated.

Good wishes on your smells!

Making Cake Mixes Taste "From Scratch"

When making a cake mix cake, I use milk instead of water. I measure the required milk in a 2 cup mixing cup. Then I add the correct amount of oil and eggs. I beat the cake mix to get the lumps out and then gradually add what is in the 2 cup measuring cup.

Once it is blended well, I scrape the bowl and then beat for 2 minutes on medium speed. I then pour the batter in a prepared 9x13 inch pan and bake it a 300 degrees F for about 45 minutes. Baking it with a lower heat makes the cake rise more evenly and keeps the cake from having narrow edges and a high center of the cake.

People that eat my cakes can't believe I used a cake mix. They say it tastes like a "scratch" cake.

Starting a Garden Journal

Start a vegetable garden journal now so you can begin planning for next year. Use a notebook of any sort and notate things you think would be helpful in future planning.

These are the things I'm including in mine:

  • Dollars spent on seeds, fertilizer, soil and such.

  • Names of the seeds planted, date planted, and dates of first harvest.

  • Cost of vegetable plants to track savings from starting from seed. At $3.50 per plant versus $1 per seed packet, I saved $96.This will motivate me to start seeds on time.

  • Names and types of fertilizers along with how often applied.

  • Number of each vegetable planted.

  • Map of garden so I'll remember what was planted where.

  • General notations about diseases, problems, what worked and what didn't.

  • Log the weight of the produce as it comes in to track real grocery store savings.

Happy gardening!

My Morning Mocha Fiber Treat

I love fancy mocha coffee like you can get at those coffee places, but really can't afford it. I also have to take a fiber supplement daily for my health. I was getting the plain flavored powdered kind so I could hide it in my juice or something, but one day my husband brought home orange-flavored fiber supplement by mistake. I opened it without my glasses on so I couldn't exchange it.

I was sad, but then I got a strange idea. I remembered those chocolate "orange slice" candies my mom had bought me every Christmas. So I poured my teaspoon of fiber at the bottom of my coffee cup, added a spoonful of chocolate drink mix (generic), and then the regular amount of instant coffee, sugar and creamer; then hot water and stirred vigorously. I was worried it would taste strange, but it was so delicious!

Now I have a great frugal way to "take my medicine" while waking up in the morning, and I'll never have to pay $4 or more for a fancy cup of coffee again! They also have chocolate flavor, I guess, so you could just go chocolate flavored coffee with your fiber hidden in it too. What a delicious way to save money and help your digestive health at the same time!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

At a clearance sale, the wife of a federal district court judge found a green tie that was a perfect match for one of her husband's sports jackets. Soon after, while the couple was vacationing at a resort complex to get his mind off a rather complicated cocaine conspiracy case, he noticed a small, round disc sewn into the design of the tie. The judge showed it to a local FBI agent, who was equally suspicious that it might be a 'bug' planted by the conspiracy defendants. The agent sent the device to FBI headquarters In Washington, DC for analysis.

Two weeks later, the judge phoned the Washington office to learn the results of their tests. "We're not sure where the disc came from," the FBI told him, "but we discovered that when you press it, it plays 'Jingle Bells.'"

Uses for Unmatched Socks

I discovered about a hundred (no kidding) unmatched socks this morning, all of different kinds and sizes. Does anyone have any idea what I can do with them before I'm forced to throw them all away? Most of them are still in pretty good shape, they just lack a partner. Thanks for the ideas! I'm open to anything.

Rates for Cleaning an Apartment Complex

I mainly clean homes. I have had a call to do an apartment complex. They want me to do the clubhouse 3 times a week and do the model homes about the same. What would I charge for that? Should I charge by the sq. ft. or the amount of time? For cleaning houses I charge $22 an hour. So what would I charge for something like that in Indiana?

Waxing While Using Acne Medication

About a month ago I stopped taking a mild antibiotic for acne. I was on it for 4 years, I also stopped using my ProActive and went back to Cetaphil. I had my eyebrows waxed while on the medication and Proactive and it waxed my skin off and scarred. Now that I'm only using Cetaphil for face wash, can I get my eyebrows waxed?

Getting Dogs to Stop Marking Territory

My 10 month old male Shi Tzu has started marking territory. He is not neutered. He was trained well at 5 months and only peed if someone didn't let him out. He barks to go out and waits patiently at the door. Since my daughter's friend had her female Pit Bull here that peed and pooped on the basement floor, Buddy has started marking on the leg of the sofa. It's very frustrating. Any suggestions?

Black Marks on Walls

My wife and I have been living in our apartment for 2 years now, in Illinois. This winter we started developing a dark or black substance on our plasterboard walls in the living room. It is slightly in the kitchen, very dark on the wooden cover over the attic in front of the bathroom doorway, and just slightly in the computer room behind the bedroom.

We do burn candles daily to keep the odor of my cigarette smoking down in the computer room and in the living room, but this never happened last year at all. Can someone please tell me if this dark substance is a mold growing or candle soot? Is there a way to tell the difference on plasterboard, and further more is their an inexpensive way to clean it off the walls.

Managing Time as a Working Woman

I'm a working woman and I'm newly married. My problem is that I cannot manage my time. I'm finding it very difficult to cook, clean and also go to work. I need to be in office by 9.30a.m and I leave the office by 6 pm. I just started cooking and find it very difficult to cut veggies etc. so I'm very slow with the cooking.

My hubby does not help me with the cooking or cleaning. If I ask him he says he will do it but its me who ends up doing it so nowadays I don't bother asking him for help. Could someone give me a time table of some sort where I can manage things better. Its just been 2 months since I got married and I already feel like "why did I get married?" I was so happy living in a hostel with not a single care.

Alberta Spruce Tree Turning Brown

In May of last year I posted that my 5 dwarf Alberta Spruces were browning out in large areas. Yet some new growth was visible. I sprayed for spider mites and also for fungus. They appeared to improve until Fall and began to brown out again. They seem even worse after the winter, but again some green seems mixed with the brown. What can I do? They are all 10 ft. or over, mature trees.
