Graham Thomas Rose

Graham Thomas rose, spring 2005, This beautiful Old English yellow rose blooms wonderfully every spring in the "wild strawberry" area of my garden. It has a delicious perfume inviting you to sink your nose into its petals.

Bandit (Lhasa Apso)

Bandit is a 10 yr.old Lhasa Apso that I got on Feb. 14, 1995.

He likes to lay on his back and put his feet straight up in the air and scratch and wiggle on the carpet. He is so funny.

Denim Pocket Purse
By Shauna Smith Duty

Ever wonder what you can do with blue jeans that have seen better days? Favorite blue jeans may not be suitable for reuse because of all the wear and tear. But they've been a faithful friend, not complaining when you dripped chili on them at that picnic, and keeping quiet after Christmas dinner when you gave their waistband a workout. Don't ditch them, recycle them! A hole in the knee or bleach spot on the leg will only add personality to a denim pocket purse made from recycled blue jeans.

Today's Tips

Use for Postage Envelopes

After going to the post office to buy stamps, sometimes they put them in one of their envelopes. They are often made of a material very similar to tracing paper. Keep these to use for when you need to make a pattern or tracing of some item, either for your child's school work or a craft project.

Be Prepared For Earthquakes

Last week we had a number of earthquakes here in CA. Just in case, I placed my tennis shoes (closed shoes) and a flashlight with new batteries by the foot of my bed. I made sure my purse, car keys, cell phone and some cash was all together. I also made sure the dog's leashes were with my things.

Replacement Cuffs for a Jacket or Sweater

I wear rib topped anklets (socks) every day, and I usually wear them completely out. I use the rib topping for replacement cuffs on jackets and sweaters. On a white double knit jacket I used pink. Then cut small hearts out of the top of the stocking and appliqued them on the pockets. You could use various colors together for another look. It looks like a new jacket! If you knit you could use them for the cuffs and just turn them back.

A Playpen for the Puppy

If you get a puppy, keep it in an old baby playpen with newspapers layered over an old shower curtain or other waterproof mat. Then the puppy can stay in the room with you without causing "accidents" on the carpet.

Uses for Ripe Fruit

Tips for using fruit that is soft and a little too ripe. Post your ideas.

Use fruits that have started to soften and put into a blender with a touch of juice or water. After doing this put in refrigerator and let sit for a while. (you may freeze and thaw for later use) After thawing, pour over ice cream, cereal, oatmeal etc. I have also used in baked goods. Also try vegetables this way. Use your imagination. Have fun with it.

Uses Stencils for Cake Decorating

I often see stencils on sale and would love to have them, but I can only stencil so many walls! They are great for cake decorating. After you frost your cake, lay the stencil on top and sprinkle with "goodies". You will have an extra special dessert with little added work. Enjoy! (Don't forget to use the stencils for scrapbooking!)

Mosquito Repellent Plants

Mosquitoes are spreading the 'West Nile' virus, we all know. Anyone outside hates being attacked by mosquitoes. Some plants repel mosquitoes. Such as: Horsemint, Marigolds, Ageratum, Mosquito Plants, Catnip (which is 10 times more effective than Deet).

Just planting these plants isn't enough, some of these leaves have to be crushed for the scent to be released. (Rosemary and Catnip-crush a few times & rub on your skin & clothing.) Don't rub the ageratum on your skin. Mosquito Plants are also called: Hummingbird Mint, Bubblegum Mint, Giant Hyssop or Giant Hummingbird Mint.

Shred Your Own Cheese

Pre-shredded cheese is expensive so I have come up with a cheaper way to have this convenience.

When I buy a block of cheese, I go ahead and grate the whole thing. I then put the cheese in a gallon freezer zip lock bag with a rounded tablespoon of cornstarch.

Then shake the bag so that it lightly coats cheese. This keeps it from sticking together when you store it in the freezer. I keep mine in the freezer so that it will keep longer.

It does not take long to thaw because it is in small shavings!
I use it in salads, chili, tacos, etc.

This is my all-time favorite tip!

Homemade Polymer Clay

Polymer clay can be expensive, but it's so easy to make, and you can color it with food coloring. The best food coloring is the paste colors that cake decorators use. They last forever.

The recipe is:

ONE PART CORNSTARCH TO ONE PART WHITE GLUE (LIKE ELMERS GLUE).

That's it. If you want it thinner, just add water. How Cheap Is That.

By Ardis Barnes

Editor's Note: There were many questions about this recipe. Fortunately, Ardis submitted another tip that may help people understand the process. Here it is:

MAKE YOUR OWN POLYMER CLAY CHEAP

Mix equal amounts of elmers glue and cornstarch. Form it into your favorite form and let it dry at least overnight. If you want to make beads, leave a toothpick in it while it dries.

I'm a Raggedy Ann buff so I make round flat forms to make Raggedy Ann pins and magnets. I do the faces with fine tip permanent markers. I just need red and black for that. The forms can be sprayed with sealer that comes in a spray can meant for clay type crafts. It can be colored with food coloring too. The best food coloring is the paste type that's used for cake decorating, and it lasts forever. How easy is this, Ha!

Selling Extra Recipes at Yard Sales

I print off recipes all the time, occasionally, I'll run across one that didn't suite our tastes. Rather than tossing it in the trash. I put it in a zipper style baggie. I do the same with recipe pamphlets I pick up at the grocery or get in the mail. Once the bag is full, I mark a price on it, $1 at the most and stash it away with my accumuluating stuff for my next yard sale. These "recipe baggies" most always sell. At one of my yard sales, I had someone buy all of them and asked if I had any more!

Mixing Boxes of Cereal

If your kids prefer sweetened cereals, go ahead and purchase it. But for every box of sweet cereal, purchase a cereal that's not sweetened and mix the 2 boxes together, so that your kids will have the sweetened taste they love but not all the sugar.

By Terri

Editor's Note: This tip isn't just for kids, you can make some really good combinations by mixing different types of cereal.

The Hunger Site

My favorite site that I click on every day is http://www.thehungersite.com

Your click on the "Give Free Food" button funds food for the hungry, paid for by site sponsors whose ads appear after you click and provide food to people in need around the world through the efforts of Mercy Corps and America's Second Harvest.

HUNGER: DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS?

It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That's roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year.

About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five.

Famine and wars cause about 10% of hunger deaths, although these tend to be the ones you hear about most often. The majority of hunger deaths are caused by chronic malnutrition. Families facing extreme poverty are simply unable to get enough food to eat.

Please remember to click every day to give help and hope to those with nowhere to turn. Every click counts in the life of a hungry person.

60% of the products purchased have been picked by or made by children. Some right here in America! The hunger site offers fair trade goods NOT made by over worked, underpaid children. Be sure to sign up for daily reminders.

Also please, please check out The one campign launched by U2s Bono and Brad Pitt to fight AIDS and world poverty.

God bless to all who take a small amount of time to help fight these huge problems!

Make Your Own Colored Bottles

Have you ever priced any of those colored bottles that are popular? Why pay those prices? Make your own! My grandmother used to make her own. She'd collect bottles of all shapes & sizes: coffee jars, syrup bottles, ice cream topping jars, perfume bottles, etc. The fancier, the better! She'd not only spray paint them, but also put on a glaze so the paint had texture and swirls.

With some of the bottles that were close in size, she'd stand them on top of each other, gluing them together as she went, making towers. Ending with a fancy shaped bottle on top. Then they were put in a safe spot to let the glue dry. Then she would spray paint the jar towers and let them dry overnight. These jar towers were really decorative in her windows with the sunshine beaming through. Really nice looking!

Spending Less on Hair Coloring

My hair is naturally a medium/dark brownish color. I am 30 now and have TONS of gray hairs taking over my hair crown area around my face. I usually just get small blonde highlights put in about once a year (I hate the idea of having high maintenance hair and spending lots of money on regular hair coloring. I would rather take that money and put it toward a college fund for my 2 boys).

Well, I did get my hair colored several months ago - it cost me $120! - I showed him a recent picture of Sandra Bullock's hair and he colored it with 4-dimensional colors that were shades of light brown to strips of champagne blonde. I LOVED IT! He made my hair look just like the picture!

Well, anyway, now I have TERRIBLE gray and dark brown roots and the rest of my hair has pretty much turned into an amber or sienna-type color... almost light red! This is a embarrassingly noticable contrast and I am wearing a hat everyday now.

I don't have the money to spend on a stylist and everytime I color my own, it still winds up two-toned (roots and tips) and is a holy nightmare. I have NO idea what I should do.

Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to even out my color?

Thanks in advance for the advice

~ Jo from TN

Recipes Using Oatmeal

I know I have read a recipe for baked oatmeal in the newsletter, but now I can't find it. I have been given 2 very large boxes of original oatmeal. The type that takes a while to cook. I figured if I could find the recipe for baked oatmeal that would be a way to use it. Any other ideas for recipes using oatmeal would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Perfume Smell on Metal

I recently bid on and won a Panasonic Discman on E-Bay. When it arrived today and I opened the box, it reeked of perfume or cologne that even was in the metal of the unit. I had to throw away the packaging immediately. As I am allergic to scent, I had to put everyting into a ziplock bag until I can figure out how to get the smell out without destroying any of the components of the Discman. Any ideas. please?

Cheap Lunch and Snack Ideas for 4 Kids

I have 2 boys, ages 6 and 8. And, for the summer, I'm now babysitting my neighbor's 2 sons as well; ages 3 and 8.

I've been trying to come up with some ideas to help me stretch my pennies while feeding all these kids. (Breakfast, Lunch, & snacks). I prefer quick and simple foods, but most the time, that's not the cheapest route. Even though I buy everything store brand or even use coupons, it's still way over my budget. There's got to be other things besides corndogs, hotdogs, pizza, chips, little debbies, fruit snacks, etc.

I also would like some ideas for any activities for us during the day to keep them active and structured. (like games, not video games, contests, arts & crafts, projects, etc.)

Thanks in advance for any advice you offer!

Hubby Bad Breath!

Hi! My husband gets really bad breath pretty much every day. I feel bad for telling him that too because he knows it already and is embarrased. He has tried mouthwash, tongue scraper, gum, etc. He thinks it is Halotosis (bad breath disease). Does this mean he needs to be medically treated for it?
