RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
Hi. Whoever Jen? is that told about her project on testing the pH levels in different foundations/ or different pH levels on different skin types.. your project idea sounds really good to me. I'm not in the 10th grade. In fact I'm only in 8th.. but I would really like it if I could learn more about what you did for your project. Please. It really sounds like an A project. And it is definitely something I could see myself being interested in doing. If you could reply on here and give me your email or something that would be great. Thanks!

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
"Which long lasting lip gloss actually lasts the longest?" first put on some lip gloss then kiss a napkin 6 times. Do this with 5 different lip glosses. Then which ever one is the darkest at the end it the longest lasting!

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
If this is a SCIENCE project then I don't see why you would look at the HISTORY of different makeup. Also, looking at which brand of lipstick stays on longest is pretty superficial and I'm confident that you won't get the marks that you want.
I'm in grade 10 and I'm also doing a science project on cosmetics. I'm testing the pH levels in different foundations. pH is the acidity level. 7 is considered neutral and anything lower is more acidic and anything higher is more basic.
Acids tend to decompose matter, so a foundation with a lower pH level will most likely break down excess oil on a persons face which would be good for people with oily skin. Bases tend to rebuild so a foundation with a higher pH level could help rebuild or restore damaged skin cells.
So testing different pH levels on different skin types would be a much more mature and scientific approach on an experiment based on cosmetics. This could also work with the protein layer in hair (testing the pH levels in shampoos) xoxx

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
I'm doing something like that too and I am going to buy a couple brands of lip gloss and then make a data table and you will have to keep your constants such as how much lip gloss you will apply, when you put on the lip gloss, and the temperature of the lip gloss. Then have to put it into a graph and you would make a bar graph because only the dependent variable is a number. The independent variable is the minutes the lip gloss lasts. The hypothesis could be that covergirl lip gloss lasts longer than wet and wild. Hope this helps you and good luck.

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
I think that you should test it, what i mean is that most science fair projects HAVE to have an experiment of some sort, so maybe you should try to put different brands of makeup on people (e.g. mascara, eyeshadow and eyeliner all from covergirl) and every person has a different brand, like the 1st person could have all covergirl then the 2nd could have all sephora, etc. Then when its time to take off the makeup make each person take it off with the same brand of makeup remover and ask them if it was hard to take off or really easy. Then you could have a hypothesis, constant, independent variable and dependent variable and have an experiment because i have noticed that if it isn't an experiment, then the teachers don't approve of it. Hope this helped! ~Lucie

I think you should do something about nail polish. Maybe get fake nails paint them with ALL the SAME nail polish, then put the in three different liquids to see which one comes off faster. so now, you have a control and a variable. try liquids such as: soda, water, or just leave one in the sun! It may work.

Try talking the girls at the cosmetics counters many of them have formal education about the products they sell. I would keep your science projects to one type of makeup or lipstick and look at it's history and ingredients. These things should give you great ideas, some foundations are using new products that reflect light in different ways.

Wow, just reading all this info gave me some great ideas! I'm doing some research on makeup and what ingredients help it stay on longer. And i just wanted to share with you an idea that my friend told me. She said that if you mix different ingredients with different kinds of makeup you could always create some sort of weird colour or bubbles might start to appear! It's pretty interesting! I tried it myself and some funny things happen. Just be careful and make sure that you don't mix any poison sort of chemicals. Trust me take it from someone who knows!

Here's an idea find out what ancient civilizations used to use for make up ingredients (Like the Egyptians) Then find out what they use today. See if the ingredient for the old days work better than the ones we use now! It could be really fun. You should check to see why they the 1 that works best does work best! HOPE IT HELPS!

hmm.. maybe you could do like which lipgloss lasts longer and you could test it by putting on the lip gloss and then every 5 minutes, or whatever, you smudge your lips on a paper towle or something and see how many smudges show up with each different lipgloss or lipstick, :) **i hope this helped !

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
Hi ~ Since it is a science project, here is a fun thing to do: You can test a piece of gold jewlry to see if it is real gold using makeup. With foundation on your face, take a piece of gold jewlry and rub it on your face (or on a hand with foundaton). If it is real gold it will leave a black mark. There is a reaction with something in the foundation....one of the oxides I believe. I know it works with liquid foundation, not sure about powder based.
Try it out, I hope it works, it always has for me.

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
I would tell the story of make-up :3000 years ago, the Egyptians already used quite a few products, among which scented grease cones they used to put on their hair, and let slowly melt. You could also show how beauty standards changed from one civilisation to the other. In France in the 19th century, it was mandatory to have a very pale complexion, and that changed completely on the 20th century when being tanned and fit meant that you were wealthy enough to afford holidays... Hope this helped

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
how about a history perspective. my mom remebers when her older sisters painted lines down the backs of their legs with eyeliner to simulate the stockings they couldn't afford in the 1940's. a company which has been around a long time has been Max Factor. how about different trends in make up style...the blue eye shadow of the fifties, heavy eyeliner of the 60's, the natural look of the 70's, glam rock and punk makeup in the 80's. how about some before and after shots of people with makeup and without. how about a focus on corrective makeup, for those with scars, birthmarks, dark under eye circles, contouring with shading and shadow v.s. cosmetic surgery, tatooed eye and lip liner and eyebrows; new age multifunctional products (chemical exfoliator, moisturizer and susnscreen all in one lotion), the new trend in cosmetics (skin care for men). i could go on and on. i am a true girly-girl; wearing makeup every day since the 6th grade; i'm 38 y.o. now.

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
After you have done your research, expect to put in just as much time putting together and decorating the experiment for the teacher. Office supply stores have the large tri fold boards that can form a nice standing backdrop.
A nice theme ccould be, "More expensive isn't necessarily better". Check out Paula Begoun's book. She is a beauty expert and author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me".

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
Good ideas, all. What I thought of was Egyptian make-up like Nefertiti wore, I think it was Kohl which is actually coal or charcoal. Also the face paint that African and Native American tribes wore. You could look into that because many of our modern make ups may be made from similar things. You could do a write up on the history of makeup up to the present time.
Here's an interesting link:

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
Consider buying some different products and letting people test them. Or, if you have the time, order some samples of the products you're planning to test or show from different companies. Chances are, if you email these people and say something like, "I'm using your item in a science fair project, and I was hoping you would donate some samples of this foundation or this lipstick. Here is the data I have collected, as compared to other products." Chances are, if you flatter them enough, they'd be willing to help you out. Good publicity for them, etc. Or if you're any good at applying makeup, as you give your topic, you could put makeup on a person, whomever volunteers. Just make sure that you ask if they have any allergies before you apply the makeup -- you'd hate for someone to come back some time later and say, "That eyeliner gave me a rash!!!" :P

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
I agree with the suggestion to do some research on ingredients in make up. Recently I was told that most mascaras are made of shoe polish and tar! If people knew what they were putting on their faces they might change their minds.

RE: Mysteries of Makeup Science Project
why don't you do a science project on just what all goes into makeup....all the different ingredients and where they come from. For instance, lipstick, eye shadow, mascara and how they are made and what their ingredients are. What do the manufacturers put into their products to make them last? another idea is what women in other countries use for makeup and where they find their ingredients. Good luck with your project.
