Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Four, Number 11, January 11, 2005
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

Not too long ago Linda posted this tip...

"Safety Pin Handy Fix It - Carry a small safety pin on your key ring. You can use it if your glasses lose a screw or you need to make a small wardrobe repair."

Just the other day, we were driving down the road on a rainy day and the windshield wiper started to slide of its arm and nearly fell off. We pulled over and the peg that attaches the arm to the wiper had disappeared. We lined up the holes, put a safety pin through it, fastened it and it has been working perfectly since. So if you haven't already, grab a safety pin (or two) and attach them to your key ring. It may save you a trip to the auto parts store.

For today's Photo Contest Entry we have a pet picture. The picture is of Mr. Drac. You can find it here:
http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf335943.tip.html

  • What is your pet's name?
  • How old is your pet?
  • What breed or mix is your pet? (If you know)

Today's Tips

Make Your Own Awnings

Instead of an old fashioned, pulley-operated awning, install a single piece of canvas attached to a wood pole at the top and at the bottom. Secure the top above your window with hooks. Attach the lower pole to prop poles on that wall to hold the awning out at an angle. Or you can create a natural awning by constructing a trellis above your window and growing a flowering vine or ivy on it.

Sterilizing Soil

Before I repot plants in soil that has been sitting in a bag in the garage or outdoors, I sterilize it and kill any hidden bugs by putting it in the oven at 200 degrees for about an hour. In a pinch, I'll wet soil throughly and microwave covered for a few minutes or until steaming. Cool before use, of course.

Save The Rind From Fruit

Save the rind - don't discard the rind of lemon, grapefruit or oranges. It makes excellent flavorings for cakes, frostings and such. Wash it well and grate, being careful not to include the bitter white part (called pith) under the rind. Put it in a tightly covered glass jar and store in the refrigerator.

Leftover apple, orange, or lemon rind can be put into your tea as it's steeping to add a wonderful flavor and aroma just like the fancy gourmet tea blends.

Herb Hint - Follow Garlic With Some Parsley

Parsley after garlic - Garnish spicy foods, especially those that contain garlic, with fresh sprigs of parsley, and encourage all your guests to finish with a piece. You'll be much more pleasant company for one another since parsley is a natural breath deodorizer.

For Safety - Keep A Neat Shop

A cluttered, sawdust-filled shop encourages accidents. Keep the floor around machines clear of obstructions that could trip you at a vulnerable moment. Sweep up sawdust as necessary. It may make your shop floor slippery, just as sand does on a shuffleboard table.

A Scare Tactic For Woodworkers

A woodworker from Massachusetts offers this novel safety tip. The most effective thing that I've done to ensure safe practices is to take an hour, go through the phone book, and compile a list of all of the surgeons in the area who specialize in reconstructive hand surgery. I called each office and checked which hospitals are used by which surgeon.

I neatly typed the name, phone number, & hospital, laminated the page in plastic, and nailed the list prominently to my workbench. This experience was nearly traumatic, and I have only to glance over at the list to become super-careful.

Uses for Clothes Pins?

What do you use clothes pins for other than hanging clothes on a clothes line?

A bag of plastic clothespins from the dollar store has so many uses. I keep a handful in the kitchen to reclose opened bags of veggies.

Stash Some Emergency Cash

Stash a $10 bill or 2 somewhere in your house for an emergency. Everyone has experiences in which a check or credit card won't do; and ATM machines do go out of order now and then. You might also stash a $10 bill in your car, in case you need gas, oil or a few groceries and are caught with an empty purse or wallet.

Use A Toothpick For Car Touch Ups

Paint chips and minor scratches can be repainted using a toothpick for a brush. First, use a typewriter eraser to clean away the rust from the damaged spot. Then, using either touch-up paint or leftover paint from a past body repair (always ask the body shop to give you any leftover paint after having work done), fill in the scratch with several coats applied a drop at a time from the end of a toothpick. The results will not be cosmetically perfect, but the rust will be prevented from spreading under the paint and further damaging the body.

A Litte Non-Stick Spray Keeps Dressing From Separating

Tired of oil-and-vinegar-type salad dressings separating? This sounds weird, but works great: Just spray a little bit of pan coating spray (like PAM) into the mix. Most of those sprays are made of lecithin, which is a natural emulsifier, and helps to bind the dressing ingredients.

Handy Device For Dog Training - A Pop Can

An empty pop can with a few pennies or washers in it. Put a small piece of duct tape over the hole to keep the pennies in. When dogs exhibit inappropriate behaviour, just shake the can. It gets their attention in a hurry!

Substitution For Heavy Whipping Cream

I was making a caramel sauce and needed 3 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream and did not have any so I substituted 6 tablespoons of whipped dessert topping and it worked fine.

Reusing Cereal Bags

Do not throw out your cereal bags. When I finish a box of cereal, I shake out the waxpaper bag and reuse for storage, or reuse to freeze a package of meat from the meat department.

Making Cheap Candles Drip Free

Soak them in a tub of water with a generous amount of regular table salt. Use at least a 1/2 cup salt in one of those plastic tubs that are at least 9 x 13. You can gently weigh them down to keep them immersed in the salt water, I never have though, I just periodically turn them. I usually soak mine for at least 2 hours, then let wicks dry and whoa, this has never failed me yet. The inexpensive candles from the Dollar Store for 3 for a Dollar, now not only are dripless but also last a long time cause they tend to burn slower as well.

Free 2005 Calendars

If you need 2005 wall calendar go to your local bank, insurance company, or a place where you do your business and ask for them. They will give you (free) all you need. It beats paying $4.99-$12.99 for them at bookstores, and office depot.

I just received four on New Year's Eve from my local bank.

Should You Itemize?
By irs.gov

Whether to itemize deductions on your tax return depends on how much you spent on certain expenses last year. According to the IRS, money paid for medical care, mortgage interest, taxes, contributions, casualty losses, and miscellaneous deductions can reduce your taxes. If the total amount spent on those categories is more than the standard deduction, you can usually benefit by itemizing.
