Storing Pet Info and Supplies

My dogs' information and emergency supplies are conveniently "stashed" in a crate I purchased on sale for $10. I have stored my pets' info in handy, colorful binders for easy access (one binder for each dog). I bought clear three-hole binder envelopes so the important stuff doesn't fall out of the binders: Veterinarian receipts

  • Proof of spay and neuter
  • Vaccination receipts
  • License info
  • Microchip numbers and registry info
  • Photographs
  • Certificates earned
Additionally, I have filed training hints and other handouts in the binders.

In the crate, there are two soft and fluffy bathmats that my dogs are familiar with: they have learned to associate their personal mat with lying down quietly and being treated and praised. I have a portable water bowl, lots of poop bags, trash bags, hand wipes, antibacterial hand wash, alcohol wipes, antibacterial ointment, extra leashes and collars, and special toys. I have a small lunch cooler in which I can put water and treats. I have trained my dogs to come to me at the sound of a clicker, so I have a clicker in the crate also, as well as an extra treat bag.

I scored a portable seat/backpack at a yard sale for $1, and have stored in the crate too, this is for me however =)

Everything I need for my dogs is stored in one place and "ready to roll", whether it be to obedience lessons, the veterinarian, a pet-friendly get-together, or an emergency.

Juice Pouch Totes

I recycle juice pouches to make useful crafts. These tote bags are great when shopping or traveling. I love helping the world be green. These are very easy to clean. I use goo gone and to keep that fresh citrus scent I just wipe them down from time to time. if your a stay at home mom. Find something you love and work at it. It's a great time killer as well.

Store Produce With Packing Peanuts

Save all the styrofoam peanuts you get in packages. When storing potatoes, apples, onions or fruit, just sprinkle the peanuts between layers to keep the items separated and allow air circulation.

Keep a Cooler in Your Trunk for Errands

Keep a cooler, any kind, in your car winter or summer to keep frozen food frozen, and to keep perishables, fruits and vegetables from freezing or becoming too hot. I use the really thick styrofoam ones that meat is sometimes delivered in. They are lightweight but very thick and well insulated. But any type of cooler is a plus for transporting valuable food items, especially if you have to make unplanned stops on the way home, such as the gas station or library etc.

Also good for storing DVD or VHS tapes so as not to melt in the hot summer sun in your car. A lock can also be fashioned with holes drilled on the latch to prevent loss even if car is left open.

Cleaning Tips With Household Supplies

  1. Sour milk of any kind, cow or goat, cleans brass. Rinse well after using for no leftover sour milk smell.
  2. 1/2 capful of liquid fabric softner and 1 cup water, mixed in a spray bottle, spray mixture on lampshades to remove dust. Rub off with paper towels.
  3. To clean a microwave, use 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar in a microwavable container, set timer for 5 minutes to soften

Scent Your Tabletop Fountain

Use an Exfoliating Glove for Scrubbing Soap Scum

Our house is really crazy busy sometimes and we often have people stay over-night. Sometimes they like to take a shower here, too. I had bought an exfoliating glove that hung in the shower, from the Dollar Store. It was starting to look like it was time to buy another one. I was in a hurry one day and needed to "freshen" up the tub for the next person so they wouldn't think it was really gross.

I threw that old glove to the bottom of the tub and moved it around with my foot. I was amazed at how EASY it was to remove that stubborn soap-scum! I started to use it on the tile walls, the glass doors and metal track. It works great on the tile grout and it is so much easier to scrub off the hard water deposits from the taps, too. I use Olay soap because it doesn't dry out our skin and it is fantastic to use on chrome. No streaks! So, I now use the slivers of soap tucked inside the glove to clean my tub almost every time I have a shower. It saves time and your back from the "all so pleasant job" of scrubbing with cleanser and is CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP! You still have to disinfect and thoroughly clean, but not as often and with a lot less elbow grease! Love it... Cheap and Easy!

Product Review: Dawn Direct Foam

My best frugal tip for cleaning is using a particular dishwashing soap that is just amazing. Dawn Direct Foam is handy for so much more than just your dishes! It works great on a damp sponge to quickly dissolve cooking spatters and spillovers from your stovetop, will clean greasy hands after automotive work, and even seems to help if you've had contact with poison ivy while gardening. (I'm extremely allergic to the ivy, but washed with Dawn Foam in cold water after accidentally handling some, and only ended up with one tiny bump where I didn't go high enough on my arm!

Saves having to waste water while waiting for hot water to get to your sink, too, because it works in cold water to do pre-washing or soaking of heavily greasy pans and casserole dishes. Sounds like a commercial for the stuff, but really, I've found it to save money in so many ways and to work in so many cleaning situations, that it's one of the few things I will pay more for initially.

It lasts a LONG time, and there's refill bottles to keep your pump bottle filled. Regular dishwashing liquid and spray cleaners just won't do all that this item will for cleaning, (and believe me, I've TRIED!) so I hardly ever buy them anymore.

Use a Spray Bottle for Cooking Oils

Make your own cooking spray by pouring canola oil into a clean spray bottle. It's much cheaper and does the same thing as canned cook sprays. You can do the same thing with olive oil for spraying steamed veggies, bread or fish.

Pay Attention to Package Sizes When Grocery Shopping

We need to be careful at the grocery store. I have noticed a growing trend about package sizes. Many companies are putting less product in their packages but keeping the outside packages the same size. A good example is snack size candy bars that use to come 10 to a package for a $1.00, on sale. If you look at them now, there are only 8 in a package. So be very aware when shopping.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

For months he had been her devoted admirer. Now, at long last, he had collected up sufficient courage to ask her the most momentous of all questions: "There are quite a lot of advantages to being a bachelor," he began, "but there comes a time when one longs for the companionship of another being -- a being who will regard one as perfect, as an idol; whom one can treat as one's absolute own; who will be kind and faithful when times are hard; who will share one's joys and sorrows."

To his delight he saw a sympathetic gleam in her eyes. Then she nodded in agreement. Finally, she responded, "I think its a great idea! Can I help you choose which puppy to buy?"

Squeaking Hardwood Foyer

Does anyone know what to do about a hardwood foyer floor that squeaks. The contractor did not put enough cement down when the boards were glued and it is squeaking badly in parts. We asked him to come over and check it out; his reply was: "can't do anything about it now except to tear it all up and start over." This would be too costly. Does anyone know if this can be solved?

Thanks,

How Do You Know if an Egg is About to Hatch?

I work at a pet store that has a no breeding policy. I began to take out the finch eggs and put them in my finch's nest. I have two females who are sitting on the eggs constantly. I have added eggs every time I see them at work, which I now realize may be problematic.

Anyways, the eggs seem to be fertile with lots of vessels and for the most filling up the whole egg. One of the eggs has a small dent that hasn't made it through the shell. I cannot see the heart beating when I check but at this point I think it may be hatching soon. What does the egg look like right before hatching? I would love to see a picture of a candled egg at that point. I don't know how long I have had this particular egg but I need to know if it could be dead or whatever.

Thanks and whatever you can tell me is great. I appreciate your help.

Health Issues After Quitting Smoking

Since Aug. I have had a sore throat on the right side with on/off ear pain. The ENT said it is a cyst, not a big deal he said. I quit smoking and thought it would get better, no. I gained 20 pounds not smoking, now I have a really sore throat and reflux. My stomach is always distended and I now have to take Acid blocker pills which do not help.

Now I have pain in left abdominal area by my belly button. My Primary thinks the throat and ear pain is due to Gerd. Anyone else have issues after quitting smoking and feeling worse? I go to a Gastro doctor on Monday. My dad passed away from Espo. cancer 8 years ago.

Tips for Painting on Denim

I need some tips for painting on denim. My stepdaughter painted some jackets for her son and my daughter. My daughter's jacket turned out great but her son's jacket didn't cover as well. It was a dark denim. She put several coats of orange paint but it looks as if she only did a half of a coat! The white paint covered fine but not the orange. What are the best paints? Is there a 'base' coat to use?

Advice for a Dealing with Fiance's Family

My daughter is getting married in a few months and she is so stressed out. Her fiance's family is trying to change most things about the wedding. She doesn't have much done, but she wants an evening wedding and they tell her she should have it in the afternoon. She had already decided on the church, her colors, her menu, and that she wanted to have a nice wedding. Nothing too big, but nice. Now they're telling her to look around at other churches, she should add other colors, to only have finger foods.

She is always in tears and she doesn't want to be rude, but enough is enough. She won't let me say anything to them, and believe me I want to so bad. They're not paying for anything, they just like to throw around advice thats not wanted. Any advice for my poor stressed out daughter.

Potted Rose Bush Losing It's Leaves

My husband bought me a potted rose bush with baby roses on it. It is, of course, in the house, as we live in Iowa and it is WAY too cold to put outside. My concern is that it is dropping almost all of it's leaves. Not sure why. They just seem to be drying up and dropping off. I try to keep it watered, but maybe I'm not enough? Maybe too much?

Also, the rose buds that had not opened when I got it have dried up and definitely will not be opening up now. This is my first rose bush and I really want it to survive. Can anyone give me any tips on how to properly care for it? We keep our house fairly cool, at 60 degrees, but according to the information on the pot, they grow best between 60 and 80 degrees.

I am also keeping it where it can get the best benefit of the sun. My house isn't super light, but it's not dark either. I keep it in front of windows, but several feet back from the window so it won't get too cold. Thanks ahead of time for any advice anyone can give me.
