Restoring Straps on Vintage Wooden Skis

I have a pair of vintage wooden skis with leather and rusted metal (no idea what kind) attachments. How can I clean/restore the metal without damaging the wood and leather?

Neatsfoot oil for the leather and if the buckles are chrome, scrub with aluminum foil and coca-cola...or a good [automotive] rust remover/polish..
Boiled Linseed oil is excellent for preserving wood, however I'm not sure if the treated wood would allow waxing(??)
