Recycling Old Candles
By Kim Davis

Do you have a favorite candle that the wick has burned completely down? Recycle it the easy way. It will involve a minimal expense but it is well worth the investment.

Duncan (Australian Galah)

Duncan (Australian Galah)

This is my pet bird 'Duncan'. He an Australian Galah. I got him as he was emerging from his egg so I am the only mother he knows, he was found in a nest when a tree was chopped down with 2 other half hatched babies. I reared them and believe me it wasn't all fun.

He is 14 months old and thinks he's part human part Labrador retriever as my other pet is a Labrador, I might add the dog is scared of the bird (with good reason.) One of Duncan's favorite things (apart from terrorising the dog) is to 'use' the computer and by that I mean try to take it apart! I took this photo when I surprised him about to "use' my computer.

Keeping Items Together at Your Yard Sale

When planning a yard sale or clothing swap, if you've got any 2 pc. or 3 pc. clothing sets (women's or children's), pin them together, so parts of them don't get sold and the others are left. You'll get a better price for the complete set, than if sold separately.

Cleaning Your Lawn Mower

Tips for cleaning your lawn mower. Post your ideas.

It is always a chore clean under the lawn mower deck. I found the best way is to find an old window screen, lay the lawn mower on its side, get the garden hose or pressure washer and let her have it. Pressure washer works the best.

All the dead grass falls on the screen, the water goes thru so when you are done all you have to do is remove the grass and dispose. It makes good mulch for plants.

By Jack

Editor's Note: I have been informed that it is not good to wash your mower with water, even the underside. It's much better to use a broom or air blower to clean underneath a mower.

Eliminating Musty Smells From a Room

Tips and ideas for eliminating musty smells. Post your ideas.

Eliminating Odors

Put glass bowls of white vinegar around the house to eliminate odors. Put something underneath them as not to discolor anything.

You can also boil white vinegar in a pan on the stove. Add oil scents if you'd like; drops of perfume oils or perfume mixed with oil (before putting in.) Use your favorite herbs mixed with oil also. Just make sure to keep an eye on it. Add cinnamon, vanilla etc. Be careful what you use some may ignite. Turn the pan down to very low once it has come to a boil.

Getting Rid of Mice

Tips for getting rid of mice. Post your ideas.

While reading some of the posts I notice that a lot have a mouse problem and want a non-toxic solution. I posted an answer to one query before I realized how many there where asking for help so decided to post as a "Tip".

Place Bounce (and it must be Bounce Brand) dryer sheets anywhere mice are a problem and presto ... no more mice. Just replace every 3 - 4 months to keep them away. I keep some tucked in the back of my cutlery drawer and linen closets at all times and have had no more problems!

Oven Fires

Keep salt close at hand to throw on oven fires in the bottom of your oven. Once the oven has cooled, the salt will aid in cleaning up the spill that caused the fire. Baking soda also works well for this.

Popcorn Tips

Tips for popping and flavoring popcorn. Post your ideas.

Love to make and eat popcorn? Tired of having a big bowl to wash? Instead of a bowl, I use a brown kraft grocery bag. Put the popped corn into a bag (will hold more than one batch), add salt, butter if you use it and shake. No big bowl to clean, keeps the corn warmer longer, and you can save leftovers and dispose of the bag when empty.

Planning the Date for Your Yard Sale

When planning to have a yard sale, be sure to find out what kinds of events are going on in your town the same weekend. If your area is like ours, it's better to have your yard sale when nothing much is going on. The more distractions going on elsewhere, the chances of having a great yard sale isn't good. Also, holiday weekends most people spend times with family and friends, so this time isn't good for yard sales around here.

Adding Blended Fruit When Baking

I take fruits and put them into a blender and then bake breads, biscuits, cakes etc. with this blend. This way I only have to add a pinch or two of oil. They come out tasteful and really good.

Bringing a Thermos To Work

You can save money by bringing coffee to work in a thermos rather than buying it there. Before filling your thermos with coffee, fill it up with hot tap water and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help warm up the thermos before adding the coffee and it will stay hot longer.

Cleaning Dirty Burner Rings

Ammonia is an effective cleaner for chrome burner rings from your stove. Remove the rings from the stove. Place a paper towel that has been dampened with ammonia on top of each ring and put them in a plastic bag. Tie the plastic bag and let it sit overnight. The next day, carefully open the bag outside and and remove the rings. Then wash the rings with a mild dishwashing soap, like Dawn. Make sure to use ammonia in a well ventilated area.

Cooking Sherry

I have a couple of recipes calling for cooking sherry and they specifically say NOT to use the cooking sherry which can be purchased from the grocery store but rather from a reliable source. Where does one find cooking sherry besides the grocery store?

Can I use regular sherry? I cook with white wine, not cooking wine, b/c the taste is superior (and less salty, not to mention the leftover wine can be enjoyed with dinner). Any ideas would help, thank you in advance. Have a wonderful day!

Restoring the Enamel Inside a Crockpot

I have a crockpot with a removable crock and I kept it plugged in with water in it on low to warm baby bottles in a hurry and now it looks as if the enamel, or whatever the inside is made of, has come off in spots.

Does anyone know how I can restore this to cook in it again or do I need a new crockpot? Please Help!

Anniversary Party Planning

I have to plan a 20th wedding anniversary. The couple did not have a wedding and they want pictures, guests, the 1st dance but no maid of honor or best man. They want their Pastor to say a few words and then do vows. She wants me to come up with a program.

There will be invitations, someone singing, a song or two, semi formal attire is preferred. There will be cake and groom's cake. Their song is Sweet November. The date is the 26th of November. They only have 1 child and he is 16 (not much help). I want it to be dazzling, romantic, memorable, people crying (from happiness) and cost effective. Help!

Setting the Colors on Tie-Died Shirts

My grandchildren have already tie-died some cotton shirts. They are dry. Now, what do I soak them in to set the colors? I remember something about using salt in solution, but have no idea how much to use or if there is something better to soak them in.

Thanks for any advice.

Water Filter Reviews

I'm in the market for a water filter.

The options are overwhelming and the expenses can be huge. You can get whole house reverse osmosis filters, deionizers, UV filters, faucet tapwater filters, under sink, next to the sink, or pitcher filters. They vary on what is filtered out from just about every possible contaminant to just chlorine.

I was wondering what other people use for filters. What is the cost of the unit and replacement filters? Ease of use? How frequently do you need to replace the filters? Are you happy with it? Why?

Thanks in advance!

Cooking for One

My son is in a new town with a new job, having graduated from college. I asked him what he was going to have for dinner, and the answer didn't make me happy. Frozen pizza, TV dinner, mushy salad in a bag destined for the trash and hot dogs were all he had in the fridge. Not nutritionally balanced.

He was going to go to the grocery store later, but I suspect it's more of the same. Any suggestions for him? He's actually a great cook, but won't unless he has friends to cook with and for. He'll have to change that attitude pronto.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Calcium Deposits in Water Heater

My husband and I moved into our home back in December. We have noticed when the dish washer runs, or right after we take showers, that we hear a loud rumble in the ceiling of our dining room (the water heater is above that in the attic). My mom thinks it is calcium build up in the heater. It sounds like bowling balls dropping on the ceiling and rolling around. It usually subsides a few minutes after a shower, or washer stops. Any suggestions? Should we fix or call someone out?

Selling Antique Furniture

I have a Drexel Heritage Dining Suite from the late 1940s. I really like having it because it was my parents. The problem is, I need money. I think that if I sell it I would be able to pay off a couple bills.

Where do i sell it? An antique dealer or consignment shop or research as much as I can and put ad in newspaper? I have been online till I am blue in the face. I can't figure out about how much it should be worth. Plus, it is full of stuff. I don't really want to get rid of the china that is in it.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good 'n Plenty Recipes

I was in Lancaster, PA recently and ate at Good 'n Plenty restaurant. I would like to have recipes for their broasted chicken, cabbage & green pepper salad and a dish made of fresh green beans, cucumbers, celery, carrot shavings and I forget what else. It was marinated in a sweet & sour dressing (I think). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Freezing Carrot Juice

I have just cropped three wheelbarrow loads of carrots. We use carrot juice every morning and I'm wondering if anyone has tips for freezing the juice. I could either freeze the carrot whole and juice them when needed, or make up the raw juice and freeze that. I'm not sure if the juice would need to be processed though. New to this forum - it looks very useful.

Coloring Your Own Hair

Now that I've gotten, um... "older", my hair, which used to be an awful mousey brown color has turned a silvery blonde color. I remember that all my aunts on my mom's side had hair this color. It must be our Swedish/Danish heritage. My aunts used to refer to it as Nordic Blonde.

Anyway, lately it has been making me look washed out. I can't afford to have it constantly colored by a professional, so I was wondering if anyone had any tips for doing it myself. All I want to do is just put a little strawberry blonde color in it.

About 5 years ago, Aussie brand had a shampoo that if used every day would gradually give your hair a little bit of strawberry red color, I used it all the time and loved it. However, they took it off the market. There are shampoos out there for red hair and brunette hair, but they are only to enhance the color you already have, they won't give your hair that color.

Thank you for any advice,
Louise
