Plumping Up Raisins

Can you plump up raisins? I want to make cinnamon rolls. I have a new box of raisins but they seem a little dry. Any way to make them moister?

Looking for Jewish Apple Cake Recipe

Does anyone have an old Jewish apple cake recipe made with bisquick? About 12 years ago, I got a recipe for Jewish Apple Cake off of the Bisquick box. It was the best and easiest that I've ever made. I've searched the net, with no luck. Even emailed Betty Crocker, who said they no longer have that recipe. Thanks so much!

Gooey Buns Recipe

I am looking for a childhood recipe called Gooey Buns. They were made with cubes of ham, cheese and I can't remember what else, but i loved them! It is a late 50's early 60's recipe.

Recreating a Friend's Chicken and Rice Casserole

A friend of mine who used to make the most delicious chicken and rice casserole died suddenly and I would love to have the recipe. I overheard her once saying that she put a packet of something she bought at the store in it to season. I don't know if it was a packet of salad dressing mix or perhaps a dry soup mix, but the results were delicious. She put whole pieces of chicken on top of the rice that was seasoned and baked it in the oven. Has anyone got any idea what the recipe might be?

Today's Recipes:

Apple Baked French Toast

Ingredients:

  • 1 large loaf French or Italian bread
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3-1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 3 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 6 to 8 medium-sized cooking apples (I use Granny Smith)
  • 2 Tbsp. butter

Directions:

Slice bread into 1-1/2-inch slices. Spray a 9x13 glass baking dish with margarine or cooking spray. Place bread in the baking dish with sides touching (snug fit). In a bowl, beat together the eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, milk and vanilla with whisk, for about 30 seconds. Pour one half of the egg mixture over the bread. Peel, core, and slice apples. Place sliced apples on top of bread to cover.

Pour balance of egg mixture evenly over apples. MIx remaining 1/2 cup sugar with cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle evenly over top of apples. Dot with butter. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Uncover dish and bake in oven for 1 hour. Remove from oven and allow to rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares and serve with warm syrup or powdered sugar.

Stained Glass Salad

Ingredients

  • 1 box cherry gelatin (3 oz.)
  • 1 box orange gelatin (3 oz.)
  • 1 box black raspberry gelatin (3 oz.)
  • 5 boxes lemon gelatin (3 oz.)
  • 1/2 gal. vanilla ice cream

Directions

Dissolve cherry, orange and black raspberry gelatin separately, using 1 1/2 cups hot water to each package. Mold each in a shallow square pan. Let set until solid. Dissolve the 5 boxes of lemon gelatin in 5 cups of boiling water. While still hot, dissolve the ice cream. Cut first 3 pans of gelatin into cubes. Easy Shepherd's Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs hamburger, ground round or something that does not have a lot of fat.
  • onions (optional)
  • peppers (optional)
  • 2 cans corn or favorite vegetables (drained)
  • Leftover potatoes or boxed potatoes

Directions

You can add whatever you want to the hamburger; onions, peppers, etc. while you brown the hamburger. Drain hamburger when done.

Put hamburger into a 10 or 12 in pie pan or small square pan whatever you have on hand,

Drain 2 can of corn or favorite vegetables (in cans), I have found corn seems to give this a really good taste. Using the regular soup size cans for your vegetables.

Empty drained corn over hamburger and spread around on top.

Then, if you have at least 2 cups potatoes left over from a meal. Or you can buy a box of potatoes, using the whole box. Use as much butter or salt while making the potatoes as suits your taste. (I have found the more butter and just enough salt make instant potatoes really good.)

Last thing to do spread potatoes over corn. Add a little butter and some pepper on top or cheese, whatever your little heart desires.

Do not cover you do not have to grease the pan either. Put into 350 degree F oven.

Bake for 30 minutes or the potatoes are golden brown.

Note: The nice thing about this recipe is the fact that you can put it together so quickly and you can put it together the night before also using anything but aluminum pans to keep in the frig. Take it out and bake.

If you do this it will take a little longer to bake. depending on how your oven heats. I would say at the least 15 min extra. You can make a salad or have rolls to add to the meal because every thing you need is right there in that pan. I love it! I hope anyone who tries this will like it just as much as I do. You can do just about anything you want for this recipe to make it your own. It's quick and easy and you usually have the items on hand.

Raise heat to broil. Broil potatoes until crisp, watching closely not to over-brown, about 1 to 2 minutes.
