After years of research and experimentation, the Got2be Hairspray is the best product out there for hawks. A blowdryer, a large comb, a can of spray and a lot of patience, and you have an adequate hawk. It becomes an art. Too much spray and it will separate leaving gaps. Not enough spray and it will fall before the night is through. Mixing with the got2be glued gel will also provide mixed results. I usually only use it at the very front and very back, to prevent them from falling.

A good hawk is an engineering marvel. All the hairs need to be connected in some way in order to provide a support structure. Any splits or gaps could cause one section to fall. So the real secret is making sure the support structure is sound. When you bend a small section over, it should take darn near the whole hawk with it. Experiment until you find what works best for you.

What I used to do was straighten my hair then hairspray it ALL up in a rough mohawk shape then I would straighten it again to make it neater and then use more hairspray and either gel or wax.

The best hairspray to use is the really cheap stuff like Superdrugs own or Asdas own. It's very sticky and holds for quite a bit all you have to do is keep touching it up after sleeping on it.

Rave 4 hairspray, a big comb, and a blowdryer, started from the back of my head where the hair parts. Once it's up, I spray the whole thing, touch it up, and let it dry. After it's dry it could withstand hurricane winds, man...and if I sleep right, it'll stay up perfectly for a week.

Mallory: maybe you got a whirl in your hair in that spot. My friend had that and couldn't put up her mohawk either on that spot.

My mohawk is longer now than in the picture I've put on here, but even when it was that short; I couldn't ever get only one spot to hold up.

You can probably already tell which part; where the top meets the back.

Does anyone have any ideas why just that part splits so badly?

The best way is to use murray's pomade, and elmers white glue. It works on really thick hair like mine. First put the pomade in to get it up, then put the glue in to keep it up.

I spike my hair regularly and what I do is:
1. Straighten your hair if curly(like mine)
2. Hold up first section/spike and cover the base with hair spray (I use any cheap strong kind I can find)
3. Use straightener to speed up drying or blow dryer if you don't have one
4. Continue all over your head
5. Use got 2 be hair glue on the tips or anyplace that is needing it

I recommend to only use regular glue on hair 3 inches or shorter.

What works for me is got to be glued (the gel) and the got to be glued hairspray. I work the gel into my hawk starting at the base then I shape it up. I blow dry it a little so it gets a little hard then I use the hairspray. Then blow dry again. so this pic is of my old hawk and it was only about 5 inches and it worked pretty good. My hawk's about 12 13 inches now and I do the same thing. It still works great.

I have a 6" mohawk, just got it cut actually, use to have 13" hair, but I have tried spiking it with elmers glue, hairspray, and that works if I let it dry elmers glue takes forever to dry in my hair. I have thick hair, and the elmers glue just isnt practical, I picked up some got2be glue and freeze, I got it to stand up, but not very good, I may not have put enough in. I used a little bit, I wasnt sure how much to use, but I used a good amount of freeze, should I add more glue before using freeze? or what am I missing.

well I've found only hairspray works for me. The other stuff like knox and woodglue are too messy, but will work so use whatever you feel keeps it up. I need something to keep mine up in the rain. Any suggestions?

I hope you're not talking about Elmer's Glue.
There are special kinds of hair gels and putties that work just like a strong holding glue. You could try something from Got 2 Be, or Fantastic Sam's..

Just don't use household glue.

Keep the glue away from your hair... I had a friend who was so frustrated and desperate, she used a mixture of galactive glue (blue and sparkley), elmers glue sticks (extra gross) and dabs of wood glue where she 'needed' it. She's bald now, and that's not joke.

For myself, when I had it, I took more of the 'death hawk' approch, which I find to be much quicker and still sylish. I used Big Sexy Hair hair spray.

Upside down, back comb it like crazy, and spray it. Fluff and repeat. For me, it takes only 10-15 minutes, which is great if you're too lazy to do anything.

Heres what you do to get THE PERFECT fan hawk, no matter what length.

You get a piece of cardboard that is a bit longer than the height of your hawk. Hold it up against the side of your head and trace your head from your forhead to however far back your hawk goes. Cut that out, so that what you have left is basically an arc. Now put that up to your head while you lay sideways on the floor and fan your hawk out so that it is exactly where you want it, and use got2b glue freeze spray (in the yellow can) and spray it thoroughly, then hairdry it while its still laying against the cardboard.

Make sure your hair is clean first then brush and comb out all the knots if you have curly hair like me. I like Got2Be Freeze Hairspray the best, I just spray down sections of my hair and hold it up while blow drying it. For me the back is the hardest part, but what i do is tilt my head back in a bathtub so that my hair is hanging down and then spray and blowdry. After you're done you'll want to do a few more layers of hairspray, especially at the bottom

Hairspray and a hairdryer works best in my opinion. Soap is rubbish and you are in a bit of a mess if it rains lol. Shugar water is a bit better but still quite bad and even tho it has good hold I wouldn't advise putting glue in it. Can of cheap hairspray, hair dryer, done.

I've got really curly hair[I'm hlaf black] and its just below my shoulder[not straightened], should I striaghten my hair then attempt to libertty spike it? or keep it curly then work with it? Also, what should I use? Hair glue doesn't work for me. Plus, my hair is heavy.

I found some hairspray by Fudge called Membrane Gas which works VERY well, but is quite expensive; about $25 for a medium-sized bottle. Now I just use that Got2Be Glued hairspray as it works just as well and is a HELL of a lot cheaper.

I make sure my hair's totally dry and clean, and then straighten it. Then, starting at the front, I take a comb and brush it upwards in clumps so it's upright. Then, while holding it up, I spray it with hairspray (make sure you use your finger to remove all the big, obvious droplets of hairspray, otherwise they dry there and look stupid) and then blow dry it until it's rigid. I do that all the way down my head so the base of the whole mohawk is solid, and then I go back and pull/spray/blow dry the tips so they're neat and tidy.

I have about a six inch tall liberty spikes/mohawk thing. I use Göt2B Glued, blow-dry, then Göt2B "Unstoppable", then blow-dry again. I put the blow-dryer on high, and the heat on low. Works really well. Takes about half an hour to do. I don't have any decent photo's at the moment, but I'll post again when I do. I also use a tiny bit of "Spiker" Water-Resistant Styling Glue on the tips. Not really necessary. But I find it helps the ends from splitting under the weight. Stays up for a long time if you do right, too.

I'm gonna cut my hair soon so it's short. But it's very curly, so what I was gonna do was just straighten it so it's just a flat hawk on my head or should I just go Glue crazy and spike it up?

My mohawk is a little baby only 4 inches tall. I use got2beglued gel. The back is the hardest part. What I do is apply the glue then get a book and close it in on the back and pull real hard. It helps. Just make sure its a big book.

Primary ingredient: Gorilla Snot
Secondary ingredient: Hairspray, any type will do, and make sure it doesn't make your hair collapse so keep spraying in small amounts until you feel that not even a really windy weather can't get it back up.
Tools used: Hair straightener. Gay or not for you insecure folks, it works like a charm. (the picture was a sneak-pic, mind my eyes being closed will you?)

I just use ice spiker dry, then use got2be glued, then dry and use got2be glued spray and it holds for like 3 days. It's kinda hard to wash out but it does.

My spikes are 7 inches now and still works. We will see how long.

I have at least 13-15 inch hair, it's thick and it's curly.
I used Rave Hairspray, it takes a bit longer to dry but it stays if you do it right.

I lay on my side, or hold the hair up but this makes my arms tired, and brush out my hair holding it as I spray the base and dry it. Making sure the base is dry I work my way up the hair brushing it straight as I do this. Blow it dry completely before you try moving it around, make sure both sides are stiff and dried.

It washes out for me within one washing, it may be more for you, but like I said I've got thick hair. In the picture here the hair is a bit wavy, but i kinda liked it like that:
[also note that I have not shaved/ ut my hair into a mohawk, it's a regular haircut]

The stuff works pretty well for 1-5 inch hawk.....once it gets beyond that, it just doens't seem to be strong enough. I've heard a lot of good things about Got2BGlued and when my supply of dollar store crap runs out, I'll give it a try.

I learned the best method is hair spray. i found that wither HOLD IT or GOT 2 B GLUE works best. first you needx to get it all standing. pull on the hair hard strait up (dont worry about it looking good yet.) then brush it out near the top (keep the base solid so it continues) continue to repeat until perfect

it works for me

kk if you want a mohawk that doesnt look permanently wet then do these easy steps
time: 20-30 mins
1.)shower do w.e wet hair idk
2.)Towel dry then use hair syrum for extreme temp(if dont own syrum then skip)
3.)blow dry completely
4.)apply gel and shape hawk(best gel is l'oreal reform gel[if oyu accidently hit it when dry it goes back to prev form])
5.)blowdry while holding the selected hair in place
6.)when gel is completely hard and dry grab or pick up a straightener and straighten the parts wehre the gel was
7.)final product is a mohawk that looks like youve put nothign in your hair and feel the same

DO not sweat or straightened hair will loose the look and the sweat will re activate the gel if happens repeat steps
may not work on super big mohawks (havent tryed it)

All ya gotta do is use got2bglued hairspray (can looks like a fog horn), a comb and a blow dryer

Hold a piece of your hawk, spread with a comb, add some hair spray, hold, blow dry scalp then work your way to the top. This works best when you do individual pieces at a time, like 1-2 in pieces. Here's a pic

Mine's perfect every time.

I found that the Elmers blue gel glue works the best.

I just separate my spikes, get my hands a lil wet, use a good amount (and by good amount, i mean A GOOD AMOUNT) of glue, and blow dry. Simple as that, just touch it up once in awhile and I bet it could last a week and a half. It washes right out too, just shampoo twice and condition.

My mohawks about 4 inches and I just use finishing spray on it. It only stays up for about a day but then thats fine because it only takes 5 minutes to do it again the next day.

I don't really like the idea of trying to sleep with it up anyway.

Put the glud Göt2Be make the form u like (liberty spike or over all mohawk) and dry. If the mohwak falls, on any sides, just pour some water on your hair and re-make the form you had.

Firstly, the hawk in the pic isn't the best that I've ever put up my hawk. But it was the first time I ever did, so that shows how easy it is when you follow the advice of someone who knows what they're doing =]
And to be honest this has become a guide of some kind rather than a comment =P But anyway:

I've had a seven and a half inch mohawk, a three and a half inch one, and now I've got a one and a half inch one =] As far as I'm concerned it's the easiest hairstyle I've ever had to maintain.

I used hairspray on the long hawk, about one large can of Tresemmé (I'm from England, does that exist in the US? =S), well anyway -- use any good, extra hold hairspray and dry it properly. The more you put on, the better it'll hold (obviously). If you're having trouble putting it up with just spray, then dry whatever spray's in yr hair already, then comb or brush it out. When that's done, put some sort of product in it, like putty or something and pull your hair up with it held between your hands. (Note: only use a small amount of putty or whatever on each bit of hair!) When you've done that put spray in it (a LOT of spray =P) and blow-dry the living heck out of it. When you've done that, do it again. Don't let go of your hair until your sure it's up properly =]
(If it's splitting at the top, use putty to stick it together. If that fails then I dunno what you can do apart from try spraying it together, but that didn't work for me =/)
This should hold the hawk up for days. I never found out how long it held, because I was outside in heavy fog with the hawk still up on the third day, and the moisture in the air ruined it, so I had to take it down.

If you've used a good spray, then your hair should bounce, and you'll be able to change tshirts without wrecking it =] Just don't do anything involving extensive amounts of moisture in the hair, because this will ruin it =P
I cut the hawk down after a while, because I didn't like the amount of attention I got. If you live somewhere where a mohawk is very rarely seen, make sure you're not shy! o.o I made that mistake =P

Okay, for the mid-length hawk, I used hairspray again, but It was much easier this time cause it was shorter. This held up for about four days without looking bad, bearing in mind that I changed clothes and slept with it up. (Like I did with the long one.)

I found that hair putties and waxes alone could hold this length up, but they tended to melt and so I started putting hairspray over the top of the putty/wax when it had dried. Wax though doesn't like hairdryers (I should have realised that) and it tends to melt a lot under the heat, so I don't recommend using that unless your hawk is shorter than like two and a half inches.

I cut this off to one and a half inches because I ran out of hairspray (lol at my stupidness XD) and was going out that night, but I ended up preferring it shorter. It is easier because: It holds for days even with weak products; I get more compliments than I get abuse for it now; I can sleep with relative ease; and I can change tshirts really easy =] (that may seem dumb but believe me -- it's a welcome change from 7.5 to 1.5 inches =P)

Wax works dead well on hair this short, and it makes it really shiny -- and if your hair gets messed up when there's only wax in it, you can reshape it again because it melts under a hand's temperature. Also, wax doesn't usually leave any residue. The only problem with it is that it's hard to wash out D: Though I'm sure most hardcore punks want their hair up forever, so this wouldn't be a problem I guess.

The only other problem with wax is that it melts. I live in a fairly cold climate, especially compared to most of America (I live in North-West England, which is practically the north pole in winter) and I don't know how a lot of sun and humidity would affect a waxed mohawk. But I don't think it'd fair well in a hot place =/

This doesn't really matter though because you can use practically anything to put up such a short mohawk. You can even use spray if you spray it onto your hands and then put it up like you would if you were using putty. This is a bit more difficult though in comparison. Also, if you put freezing spray or hairspray onto shorter mohawks it usually helps to keep them up and rigid.

And when you're spiking mohawks it IS more difficult to get it to look good than if you do yr hair in a fan. Don't believe what anyone says, I'm serious -- but it's easier to spike a shorter mohawk properly cause you only need hand-applied products to put it up.

Spiking longer hawks is done exactly as you'd think: get a section of hair, pull it tight (into a spike shape) and spray it, basically. Just do the same as you'd do with a fan and it'll be fine. Just put some hair glue or something on the tip to keep it sharp though, or then you look like you've got carrots coming outta your head or something, which isn't good =/

All in all, the more stuff you put on it (after each layer's dried like) the longer it'll stay up, and the more rigid it'll be. Sprays make it bouncy, and hair glues make it rigid.

You can't headbang for long with a long hawk, which is only hairsprayed. It WILL start to fall down unless you've put serious amounts of spray, like cans onto it.
I've never put like wood glue or that kinda stuff in it, cause I don't want to have to shave it out =/

The last things I can really say from personal experience are:
- People will want to touch it. Don't let them.
- It should be obvious, but don't get it wet xD
- That you shouldn't use glue sticks. It's not good, and it should only be done in emergencies =P (It leaves clumps and it's evil to get it to stay up.)
- And you should never use normal gels; they're just too watery and won't help. They fall down and you look like a d*ckhead. L'Oreal Studioline Elastic effect Gel is good cause it bounces back and has a strong hold, but it still needs blow-drying or it'll fall down in the same way. Also if you have to use gel, hairspray it if possible, or use a fixing spray.

Well I hope that helps cause it's taken me a stupidly long time to type.
Just follow this, and if it's not working then I dunno what you're doing wrong =]

Oh, and don't backcomb a hawk unless you have to -- it looks terrible unless you're doing a Johnny Doom type thing =]

RE: Using Glue to Make a Mohawk with Spikes

it is not easy to get out but it is possible, i use to use elmers clear glue to make my spikes stand so i would do it the monday of every week and then would wash it out friday, it would keep for the whole week, my spikes were generally between 1.5 and 3.5 inches. (05/06/2005)

Back in the very weird decade of the 1980s punk rockers used egg whites to spike their hair. It washes out easily. I would stay away from the glue. You could wind up with a terrible mess! (05/07/2005)

By Mary

RE: Using Glue to Make a Mohawk with Spikes

DON"T use crazy glue....you'll have a terrific mess and may have those spikes a lot longer than you want....maybe until it's all grown out! There are a lot of styling waxes and pastes on the market to spike your hair. Most are just a couple of dollars. (05/09/2005)

By Claudia

RE: Using Glue to Make a Mohawk with Spikes

back in my old punk rock days we used to use egg whites but it would flake off and end up smelling...so dont try that. There is some really stuff hair gel on the market now that would work. I never tried the glue thing. hope your hair is colored nice. Mohowks look best when the hair is colored well. (05/15/2005)

gelatin works like egg but doesn't get the smell, and you can touch it up by dampening and reshaping. dish soap helps to remove it. think of yourself as a human confection. (05/23/2005)

Elmer's Washable School Gel. That's what I use. It's blue but it dries clear and holds great. But you have to blow dry the shit out of each individual * so it dries and holds. Now whenever someone says "Why the hell would anyone want (i)washable(/i) glue?" you can point at your hair with a big grin on your face. (06/15/2005)

how do you spike it with jello. do u propare it but instead of placing in the frig u place on hair and blow dry...or how does that magic stuff work? (06/30/2005)

By Polloman

RE: Using Glue to Make a Mohawk with Spikes

If you want to smell like fruity jello, it will work but from what I've read, plain knox gelatin or egg whites work better. When doing liberty spikes take a chunk of damp hair, rub the egg whites, or dissolved (just enough hot water so it dissolves) knox gelatin in. Work it into the hair, down to the roots, and hold the hair up. Then blowdry it until it is dry. You can then coat the spike(s) with some cheap hairspray. (06/30/2005)

Here in cleveland we use knox. All you do is put it in the microwave for 10 seconds and stir it good. it should be snotty like. it'll keep your hair up for a week. to get it out wash your hair like three times or so. I hear you can use baking soda to get it out also. If you get your head done and dry and relize you did it shirtless thats ok just put your shirt on and your spikes'll bounce right up. i think you can sleep with em too. (07/22/2005)

RE: Using Glue to Make a Mohawk with Spikes

Gelatin is good, if you don't mind animal stuff. I used it on a tall green mohawk once, it took just two goes to get it to last about 6 weeks. It begins to get a tad crusty, and the spines fall forward or backward after a bit, but it's good, and it keeps the green dye in there longer too. A bit of rain makes it possible to improve the spike a bit, so long as there's not much of it. I knew of a guy who used superglue, but I don't reckon that is so good. Cyanoacrylate might not be toxic once it cures, but during the curing it's exothermic and highly corrosive. It's also expensive. BEsides, gelatin is just as hard and sharp so long as it's dry, and a damn sight easier to remove once you have reason to change it. (08/05/2005)

glue is not hard to wash out of your hair, and the best kind to use is the blue kind, cos it dries clear, all you need to do is just conditioner to get it out. you can water it down to make a sort of gel, or just apply it straight to your hair (08/19/2005)

glue is very easy to get out. end of story. anyone who says its hard is totally joshing you. would glue will keep your hair up for even longer but is a tad bit harder to get out. to get normal elmers glue out, just use conditioner in the shower, condition 2-3 times and its done. (08/20/2005)

my hair is around 6.5 Inches tall and i usually use hair spray for mine, all I do is grab the front spray and blow dry it a load and keep doing this until I get half way then I ask my mate to do the back cause it is really hard to do by yourself, I think it is Shock waves ultra strong (if you use any old type of hair spray it will not work to well so get ultra strong stuff) if you have a short mohawk use gel or soap, dont even bother using gel for a long one it is to heavy! I once used PVA glue in my hair I would not recommend anyone using it in there hair! I also heard that sugar and water worked and then blow dry it did not work to well but I smelt like candy floss! haha!! also if you want to keep your mohawk get any split ends on it cut off once a month otherwise your goes to shite and it is hard to manage. Glue is easy to get out (with warm water). The best method for mohawKs 4 inches and taller, do this: Pull the mohawk up between 2 combs/brushes. Hairspray a LOT. Blowdry it for about 30 seconds each side. If your hair is curly/wavy, do this, then flat-iron it with the hairspray. (07/08/2006)

I don't know who started the egg whites.. unless you can't afford elmers glue or gel I would not recomend egg whites. Got2B hair gel is ok, but your hair will fall limp after an hour or 2, Spiker glue is a bit better, Rave vol 4 hair spray is amazing, and the best thing I have ever tryed, is from the Xtah line, its called Bondage, in a green plastic jar. its Godly, a bit pricey but its on sale right now (it's a raw resin and no other gel holds better). also, Bed Head Mohawk glue by TIGI is great, perfect if you have to wash out your hawk everynight for work. geletin is probably the best hold you can get. RE: Using Glue to Make a Mohawk with Spikes

Hello. So yeah, I asked my friends as a joke that what I'll get from them if I make a mohawk to the last day of school, they said I'll get some money, so I said I'll do it. Question: What would be the easiest/cheapest way to make a homemade mohawk? I thought about not to cut my hair. In the back it's like (around 10cm) 4 inches short, and on the top about (around 13cm) 5 inches, and on the sides about (around 12-13cm) 5 inches too. Well, thought I'll put on the sides straight down, but how would I get the hair up nicely? I want it like the whole top and neck to be a 'mohawk' and not only a small line in the middle. (Think that's called a faux-hawk?) It will grow, because the last day of school is 2.6 if I remember right, so there's about 9 weeks for the hair to grow. Never done anything to my hair, besider coloring it, and yeah, it's kinda thin too. Thanks in advance! Regards, Jani from Finland. P.S. If you wanna ask something, then ask, I try to check this every day. (03/26/2007)

Well, I would, but didn't find those in any store in Finland, and I'm not going to buy it from abroad. Know any good Schwarzkopf stuff or something like that, because it's the most common hairproduct in Finland. You can still suggest something else than Schwarzkopf, but then I can't be 100% sure it will be found in a store here. Thanks for the suggestion! :) Regards, Jani from Finland (03/27/2007)
