Late Summer Storm

We are located in a region known as the Palouse of Eastern Washington. The picture of this frightening storm was taken just outside of my home in Rosalia, WA on August 22, 2008, overlooking the wheat field bordered by HWY 195 to the east.

Late summer-early fall storms are pretty dangerous in our region since most storms only produce dry lightening. With an average annual precipitation of around 17 inches and low summer humidity it is not at all uncommon for these extremely dry grain fields to catch fire. My home only sits about 20 feet west of this particular field and we are only separated by a narrow dirt road.

Wildlife: Starfish in Alaska

I just thought people would like to see that starfish come in different colors. I took this picture when I lived in Klawock, Alaska. We were going clamming because there was a minus 13 foot tide.

Winslow (Lab/Pointer)

Winslow a 2 year old Lab/Pointer mix. I really wanted a puppy, but didn't have the extra money. We were on our way to my in laws and saw a "free puppies" sign out at the road and decided to take a look. When we went back to look at them, a bunch of black lab puppies came out of the pen. Then out come Winslow with his cute polka dots, I fell in love right away and off he went with us.

He loves to cause trouble, not kidding! If you've seen the movie "Marley and Me", he is just like Marley. He loves to dig holes all over the yard, steal the kids sand toys and chew them up. He loves to hunt and play, he also loves water (he lays in mud puddles if there's no water to play in)

Winslow is also a sweet boy, he loves to cuddle and is great with kids. He's definitely got a one of a kind personality.

Re-scan TV Channels When Installing New Equipment

We recently installed a new antenna, the previous one being some 20 years old and falling apart. Well, It was installed and didn't work. I re-read the instructions for the upteenth time, and there, hidden in the small print on the bottom of the page, was the reason. I had to re-scan the channels on each TV

So, before you panic and call in a professional service, re-scan. It may save you a lot of aggravation.

Use T-Gel For Itching Ears

I felt an annoying tickling in my right ear. An ENT specialist told me it was eczema and prescribed a steroidal ointment No relief. My dermatologist diagnosed it as psoriasis and suggested I try T-Gel, a shampoo I had been using for itching of my scalp and dandruff in mustache and eyebrows. T-Gel has been working perfectly. No more tickling sensation. Apply with Q-tip as directed.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Pet Poisoning

I recently found out that most flowers and plants are poisonous to cats, after I discovered 2 of mine eating the lilies I had just put in a vase from my garden. I looked on the internet for information regarding this only to discover that if your pet is not seen by a vet within the first six hours of ingesting the flowers, they will die within 5 days of kidney failure. I immediately called the vet which were closing in 10 minutes, and explained my situation.

HERE'S THE TIP: She told me to give each cat a tsp. of Hydrogen Peroxide, making sure to get it in the back of their throat. Wait 5 minutes for them to throw up. If they don't, repeat it ONLY 1 MORE TIME. Wait 5 minutes. If they still haven't, put a tiny pinch of salt in the back of their throat. Wait 5 more minutes. By then, if they haven't, take them to a vet immediately. It worked the first time with Mimzy and the second time with Monazy! Both are still healthy and still with us, thankfully.

By Jackie from Des Moines, Iowa

Editor's Note: Please always consult a vet first, before trying home remedies.

Double Bag to Prevent Freezer Burn

I love using zip lock bags for freezing meats and sauces, but do not like the expense. I also double the bags when freezing to prevent freezer burn. So, I first put the sauce or meat into a recycled plastic or waxed bag, and close it with tape or twist tie. Then, I put the bagged food into the zip lock. By doing it this way, I'm able to reuse the zip lock over and over again.

Deter Ants With Black Pepper

Want to keep ants away from your kitchen counter, garbage can or away from shrubs or trees or flowers or just about anything? I use black pepper from the kitchen. Just sprinkle it around anything and leave it there, it will deter ants large and small. I haven't had an ant problem since I used it 3 months ago. It works great for me, try it and see if it works. Only sprinkle it lightly inside the house, but a little more for outside.

Shop End of Season Sales

Remember end of season savings! I stock up on end of season plastic tableware or pool toys to give out as gifts throughout the year. For example: I just found beautiful $10.00 pitchers for $1.50. They make great gift baskets. I get red and green for Christmas - yellow for Easter, etc.

Go to the swimming pool department; my kids are wild over Slip and Slides and they are $20.00 when the season starts. I just picked up a pile of them for $1.97 each. When I give these to kids at birthday parties, they are thrilled! I even give them in the winter and they can save them for summer, they love it! A $20 present for $1.97, you can't beat that!

Summer Learning Fun

Here are a couple of things that you could do to keep your child's mind occupied during the summer months, as well as helping them have fun learning.

  1. Have your child write a report on one certain type of wildlife. It can be squirrels, one type of bird, deer, alligators or crocodiles (depending on where you live), one type of bear, one type of wild cat, or any other wild animal, but make it one that is native to your area to make it more interesting for the child.

Buy an inexpensive digital camera for each child. While they are writing their report, have them take pictures of the animal they are researching. If their camera has a zoom, have them take close up pictures. If it's safe, and you can find some, you could let the child take pictures of the animals in their natural habitat. If it's not safe, then you could take them to a zoo or other setting where they could take pictures. Florida has alligator farms that would be perfect.

Or, you could have the child write a report and take pictures of one of your current pets. This could include the species of pet, breed, size, name, when you got the pet, what it likes to eat, any treats it prefers, favorite toys, favorite games, favorite things it likes (belly rubbing, ear rubbing, sleeping next to who, etc). And have the child include several pictures of the pet, both by itself, and intermingling with the family.

  2. Call around and find a local farm or ranch and schedule a day that you could bring your child to visit and learn about farm/ranch living. Make it a nice outside day so that your child can go with the farmer/rancher and learn about the animals and caring for them, also about the crops grown and caring for them, what crops are grown when and where. And also let the farmer's wife teach them a little about farm cooking and eating.

  3. Have the child make a report on your state. Have him include state birds, trees, flowers, and any other state things. Also, the state's crops. Animals native to your state. Have them include interesting places to see in your state; beaches, parks, mountains, zoos, theme parks, old or interesting towns/villages, anything else interesting to see. Also have them include a map of your state. The report should not include financial reports, political reports, or anything else like this. They will learn about those in school. But this report would get them interested in learning more and more about their state, thereby gettng them interested for when they do learn about it in school.

  4. You could create a "subject bowl". In it you would put pieces of paper each with a state, a president, a country, an animal, an important person of the world, and any other subject you could come up with. Any subjects that your child would be interested in would be appropriate to include, but NOT subjects that your child would not be or become interested in. Remember this is supposed to be learning, but also FUN. Put all the pieces folded up in the bowl.

Once a week have each child pull out a piece of paper and have that be his subject for the week. Remember to have the child replace the paper in the bowl to be reused.

All or each of these would keep any child occupied and keep them interested in learning. Plus most of them would be an excellent family project too!

Practice "Stranger Danger" With Your Children

My daughter plays a little game with my granddaughter that I think is smart. When I was visiting, she asked me to walk her to her school bus stop one morning. I did not have a clue what was coming but I was a proud mother of her grown daughter when I did find out.

As we was walking, my daughter drove by (she had on a hat and jacket with her collar turned up) and slowed down, rolled down her window and said "Hey little girl, I sure do like those pink shoes." My granddaughter looked away and kept walking. Then she said "Hey, I have a cool puppy you wanna see it." My granddaughter said "NOOOO, go away!" Then she screamed very loudly, "I don't know you! I don't know you. " At first I didn't know what to do, I was thinking "What will people think with her screaming like that?" My daughter got out of her car and they both high fived each other after a few minutes of the screaming.

A couple of days later she changed it up a bit. She told my granddaughter that she was going to shower but she snuck outside and rang the door bell. My granddaughter went to the door and asked who it was without opening the door. They went though a little game back and forth but she did not open the door.

At first I was worried that it would make her scared, but what my daughter said was she wants to make her aware. She said she changes up different scenarios but there is one main thing they do not change. They have a code word. It is their code and no one knows it. That way if anyone tells her mom sent them or mom said it was ok, she knows if they did or not.

Borrow A "Kill A Watt" Monitor From Your Library

Our local library offers, to members, free usage of Kill A Watt monitor for three days. There is a waiting list but it is well worth the wait. Check your local library to see if they offer it. It was donated by the local power company.

For those not familiar with Kill A Watt, it is a device that will monitor your electrical usage for each item in your home. This can help you make changes in your usage if need be. By knowing how much power is used by an electrical item may help you save money by eliminating it or cutting back.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A man's best friend dies, so he calls the nearest flower shop to order a wreath of flowers to be displayed at the wake.

"Put an extra-wide ribbon on it," he tells the clerk. "Print 'Rest in Peace' on both sides and, if there is room, 'We Shall Meet in Heaven.'"

The clerk assures him that his order will be carried out and the wreath promptly delivered to the funeral home.

Sure enough, the wreath arrives and is set up next to the casket. But the mourners are stunned when they see it. On the extra-wide ribbon is the inscription, "Rest in peace on both sides, and, if there is room, we shall meet in Heaven."
