Cully Photo

Cully continued to attract the dog next door to come out and trample all over the garden. When I told him not to do that, he would hide in the clothes basket. You will understand why I have problems being objective where my little man is concerned.

Cheers and Thanks for the opportunity to share about my dear little man.

Today's Tips

Recycling School Supplies

Starting at the beginning of the school year (we started this in grade school), I let my children know that any school supplies that could be re-used the next year would be eligible for $1.00 per item. Example: dictionary - $1.00, geometry kit - $1.00, calculator - $1.00, etc. The items I bought were good quality and I would only pay $1.00 per item to the children if they brought them home in good condition.

Knowing this before the school year started, my children did very well and made some much needed vacation money from me at the end of the school year. Each year they look forward to this recycling money. My school supply costs went way down!

Sudsy Ammonia For Pet Odors

I'd tried everything, including tips from this site and was about to give up and tear out the carpet where my 1 year old silver tabby had sprayed AND peed in the corner of my closet, on my brand new carpet. I thought I'd give it one more shot and poured nearly half a bottle of sudsy ammonia in that entire half of the closet! AND IT WORKED!

No more gagging smell, nothing! And best of all, Sparky has decided that he is done with spraying and peeing inside the house, and he will not even enter that closet at all now!

I placed a table fan blowing on the carpet to dry it and since it is commercial grade, rubber-backed carpet, the whole process took less than a day. I was quite fortunate to not have to go more drastic and replace the carpet squares, and the cat!

SUDSY AMMONIA saved the day for us! Hope this works for someone else, too.

Recycled Food Containers As Water Weights

Wash the Lay's Stax brand plastic chip cans (like Pringles) when finished with the chips. Also save your empty milk gallon and/or half gallon jugs. Fill them with water. Use in your pools as water weights. If the lids were to come off in the pool, no problem.

Individual Apple Pie

Open one can of crescents, take two triangles of crescents, so they look like a rectangle. Sprinkle lots and lots of cinnamon and sugar, take your apple, peel it, and cut it in 4 pieces, yes 4 pieces. Place each piece on crescent and roll it all up. Place as is in sprayed cake pan. Then pour 1 can mountain dew all over small apple pies. Bake on 350 degrees F for about 30 minutes, depends on ovens. Voila (Wallah), my family loves them.

Protect Your Identity Without Using A Shredder

Save time and money by not shredding mail. The shredder costs money and the shredding can take quite a bit of time. But I don't want anyone to be able to get bank account numbers, etc, from my trash. So here's what I do. Take a bunch of the papers and tear in a few pieces. Soak in hot water until mushy and the water is cool enough to put your hands in. Squash the "mush" and roll into a ball. Let it dry and throw into trash. In case this sounds familiar, it's the same as making papier mache. Only I squeeze it into a ball. It's easy, fast, and the info on those pages is gone!

My Frugal Life - My Frugal Grandfather

This isn't actually a story of my life but one of my grandfather who passed away 4 years ago. I still miss him.

I remember going to my grandparents on a regular basis. My grandparents went through the depression which made my grandfather become very frugal due to the fact they had 6 kids. My mother would always tell me as a child, they always had meat, potatoes and a veggie at every meal. But each person was only allowed 1 piece of meat, no matter how much was left over.

They raised chickens, not only for meat but for eggs. Laundry was washed on a wringer washer and hung out on the line before they went to school. They still had chickens even as I grew up and laundry was still hung out on the line.

Grandfather would buy his clothes at garage sales or flea markets. Dishes and furniture too. They had the same furniture for as long as I could remember. All meals were made from scratch and nothing wasted. But we never cared, we would go for walk along the creek and look for arrow heads or maybe fish. Just spending time with him was all we wanted

Baking With Silicon Bakeware

Since baking with the silicon bakeware, I have noticed that the bottoms of my banana breads are not quite done. Based on the fact that heat rises; after removing the pan from the oven, I turn it upside down on a rack. When it cools off enough, I remove the baking form, but still leave it upside down.

This seems to help the underdone, mushy situation.

Hairspray For Ink Stains

I've had many instance where I accidentally write on my clothing. I found that using hairspray (almost any brand) will amazingly remove ink-pen stains from clothing! Just be sure to spray the hairspray on an unnoticeable area first just to make sure that it doesn't take the color out of the garment!

Poem: Life's Garden

Life is like a garden.
Each day a budding flower,
Unfolding at the dawning
To close at sunset hour

Life is like a garden
With a bit of sun and rain,
Helping it to grow
And strength and beauty gain.

Life is like a garden
Where we may sow the seeds
Of happiness, contentment and faith,
By kind and constant deeds.

Life is like a garden
Rich and fertile as the sod,
Where we may reap our blessings
With the help of God.

Thought this was a special poem. I hope someone else might enjoy it as well.

Perspiration Problems

My niece has a problem with perspiration under her arms. She is only 16 years old. She has used every kind of antiperspirant imaginable but she still sweats badly and hates this problem. She doesn't have a bad odor under her arms, just the sweating that embarrasses her. What can she do to prevent this? I sure hope someone can solve this as she is very popular and smart and has a lot of friends and this really annoys her. I love my Niece and would like to help her.

Frugal Ethics - When Frugal Becomes Just Plain Cheap
By Tawra Kellam

There are times when it's tempting to lie, steal or break one of the other 10 Commandments to get a good deal but, in living frugally, we all need to stick to being honest. This is not always easy to do, but I want to give some examples that may help you stay honest. Here are some common tactics that some people use that are unethical and sometimes illegal:

Freezing Strawberries

Selecting High-Quality Fruit Strawberries:

Select fully ripe, firm berries with a deep red color. They should be plump and moist in appearance. Avoid dry, shriveled berries with brown caps, or soft-bodied berries that are bruised or leaking juices. Keep in mind that very large containers may contain berries that are being crushed by their own weight. Steer clear of sticky containers and berries showing signs of mold.

Back to school, or back to the poor house?
By Tawra Kellam

Back to school is a time when many moms witness their money sprout wings and take flight, finding their homes at retail stores across America. I know that consumer spending is good for the economy, but I don't take it upon myself to keep the entire US economy propped up, so when my first-grade son announced that he wanted a backpack with rollers, I saw this as a wonderful financial teaching moment. His school is small, and he doesn't walk to or from school. He didn't need rollers.

Getting Started in Solar Electric Power
By Ellen Brown

When it comes to solar power, most people are interested in it, but they have no idea how to get started. For those that decide to forge ahead and explore their options, many become intimidated by the all of the confusing terminology or abandon their solar aspirations early fearing a hefty price tag. Getting started in solar isn't as hard (or as costly) as you might think, provided that is, that you start with the basics.
