Being Thrifty and Creative

I buy a lot of my son's clothing on eBay--he quickly grows out of things or stains them, and you can find some great deals on there! So it's a thrifty option! Anyway, I had gotten him a pair of Old Navy jeans, but before he could wear them, he got a hold of a Sharpie marker! There were some marks on the jeans that I couldn't get out, despite LOTS of trying!

I hated to throw the jeans out, so I finally bought a few firefighter patches (also from eBay!) and sewed them over the marks. I also bought a very cute, barely worn firefighter shirt at a local thrift store. The end result was that I not only saved the jeans, but he had a cute outfit that got compliments! It pays to be creative and thrifty!

In Memory of Toby (Yorkshire Terrier)

Toby, our 12 year old Yorkie died in my arms so we had to get another pet. I was crying for 3 weeks over Toby. After we lost Toby we got another Yorkie named Odie. I thought I had posted him on this site some time ago but they've been unable to find the picture. He has been missed.

Today's Tips:

Early Fall Is The Best Time To Plant Trees And Shrubs

September mornings are great, aren't they? It is now beginning to be the best time to plant trees and shrubs. It is a great time because the above ground temperatures are dropping and the below ground temps are still warm.

This helps plants get a jump on next spring because the roots still develop in the warm soil while the tops slow down in growth. Also, there are less winds and typically more moisture during this time of year, which of course reduces stress on newly planted shrubs and trees. You should be able to plant just about anything, including pansies, (which will last through next May) mums, winter veggies (starts), most trees and shrubs.

Watering your lawn should be reduced by frequency and time. This will help avoid lawn fungus or premature yellowing. Shrubs and trees will be the same as above. This does not include newly planted items. So please enjoy the much needed moisture. Hopefully this will translate into more snow for our area?

There are a few exceptions: Palm trees might be better planted in the spring and summer, in order to get a good root establishment before the winter sets in. (for the southern part of New Mexico)

Oleanders may experience some winter kill if planted too late in the season, especially the 1 gallon size. The larger sizes seem to suffer the least winter kill. This is usually for the the first winter, after that they will have even less winter or no winter kill as they age. Using a winterizer fertilizer with plenty of potash will help increase winter hardiness just about all shrubs and trees.

It is recommended for valuable plants that may suffer from winter damage. Use this product before October 30th. Don't forget to use compost, peat moss, or soil builder and root stimulator on all plantings, and make sure plants have adequate water.

Use A Doodle Pro For Notes

Instead of buying notepads to leave notes, use your child's Doodle Pro. They save the expense of buying note paper and that would save some trees! Some little Doodle Pros fit in purses for shopping notes.

Makeup Brushes Are A Good Cat Toy

I have found that cats love to play with make-up brushes. From big to small brushes, cats can bat them, carry them in their mouth, hide them, and even play fetch. Most women have more than one of these lying around and usually throw them away when they done using them. I suggest rinsing them off and giving them to your cat. I have never seen a cat not adore them, and when my beloved cat Puffer Stuff died, I found her stash of over half a dozen brushes in our basement.

Freeze Your Cabbage For Rolls

For making stuffed cabbage rolls, put the cabbage in the freezer (whole) for a few hours until it's pretty solid. Take it out and leave it to thaw. The cabbage leaves will be soft and pliable - no need to boil them - and so easy to stuff and roll. Saves a lot of work!

Use Spray Glue And Fabric To Cover Worn Upholstery

Think of spray glue as a help with spiffing up your upholstery! My husband, the practical one, used spray glue to glue the tapestry placemats that I had decided to use as sort of antimacassars in a contrasting pattern (you know, they are those doily things on sofas, etc.) on a wing chair we had which had bad wear on the arms. Then later, we used the spray glue to hold on another piece of fabric on the seat cushion when it started to wear there. The fabric underneath is shot, anyway, so no harm done - and it does hold them in place!

What is a "moberly" room?

This is something that has puzzled me for 40 years. When I was in high school I read a book (can't remember the title or author) that was set in Victorian England. A room in a big mansion was described as a "moberly" room.Does anybody know what "moberly" is? It wasn't anybody's name. I can't find this word in any dictionary or online. Any ideas?

Gas or Electric Fireplace?

My wife and I are considering having a fireplace installed in our 650 square feet room in the basement, even so the house is well central heated. My wife wants the glow that the fireplace produces, but we are unable to decide whether to have an electric or gas fireplace. My wife is also concerned about fumes produced by gas. We live in Ottawa Canada and can get very cold in the winter! Any advice will be much appreciated.

Uses for Address Labels

Quite a while ago I purchased several boxes of white return address labels and can't return them to the store. The dimensions are 1/2" x 1 3/4" and can't use them in my printer. I tried setting my printer for the smallest type, but part of my address is cut off so I can't use them for address labels.

I tried selling them at a reduced price, but have had no luck. I would appreciate any suggestions of how these labels can be used because I really don't want to throw them away.

What breed is my dog?

I think she has some Staffie in her because of the brindle, but I'm not sure what the rest could be. She's lightening quick and seems to go for any squirrel or pigeon that crosses her path. She's just over a year old and I got her from a rescue home so I don't know anything about her background.

Reusing Embroidery From Old Shirts

I have some old embroidered shirts that are worn out. I'd like to reuse the embroidery on a new shirt. Any ideas on how? I've tried cutting out an oval of the piece and using more embroidery to "frame" but that requires a lot of matching shirt for shirt. And it doesn't look that good.

Dog With Allergies

Any ideas on how to help dog with allergys? He is scratching himself like crazy and making himself bleed. I took him to the vets they gave him allergy pills, but he still scratches. The only thing that works some in cortisone shots, but vet won't do those anymore, wants me to take him to expensive allergy vet, that we just can not afford. $800 just to look at dog, then more money to treat. My mother-in-law takes her dog to him, and she said it costs her a lot.

Quick Touch Power Roller Reviews

I'd like to buy an electric painting kit. I found one, a 980 Quick Touch Power Roller, on sale for $57, $20 rebate, my cost would only be $37. Is that worth it? It comes with a roller, splatter shield, 12' paint hose and 14' extension. Fingertip paint flow control, light weight and mobile.

Another choice is the 990 Pro (same manufacturer) for $79-$20 rebate=$59. I'm only using this to repaint a dining room right now, but will use it more in the future. Does this work good for doing the ceilings?

Inexpensive Slipcover For Square Ottoman

I have a large square ottoman that is in perfect condition. However the fabric pattern no longer goes with my decor. I would like to have a slipcover made as it does not need to be reupholstered. I do not own a sewing machine nor do I know how to operate one. Can anyone offer me any suggestions on how to make a slipcover without using a sewing machine. I have advertised on craigslist to have one made & pay for it but they want $75 to $100. Even though I realize that this may be the going rate it is not in my budget to pay that amount. Advice For House Training Puggle Puppy

I am having a big problem potty training my 4 1/2 month old puggle puppy. I have went with the crate training method, and she has no problems with being in the crate. I feed her dinner in the evening and then take her outside immediately. She always poops outside after dinner and before bed. And she "seems" to sleep the whole night in her crate, with no whining or barking or anything. But lately I've been noticing brown smears on the crate pan and even some little pieces of poop stuck in her hair.

So obviously she's pooping, laying in it and then eating it at some point through the night. I have never caught her in the act, and I have tried everything I can think of...

Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated!
