Chocolate Depression Cake


  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • pinch salt
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 10 level Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 cup salad oil
  • Ad
  • 2 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 2 cups cold water


Sift dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix with a large spoon until smooth. Spoon into a greased and floured 13x9x2 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes. Frost with your favorite frosting.

I worked at a summer camp and we made this X 5 and it came out fine. We baked it in hotel pans (commercial cooking pans maybe 9X18(this is just my guess, it's been a while). If the pan was deeper than you'd usually use for a cake, a sheet of foil over the top for the last 1/3 of the time worked well.
