Craft Photo: Easter Basket

I designed this Easter Basket for my 1 year old granddaughter. I drew a bunny on both sides by hand, with beads for eggs under him. Then I put a pom pom tail on the end. I spelled her name out on the handle, with more egg beads.

Craft Project: Fan-Fold Butterflies

Spring is here! I will be submitting different "buggy" crafts that my daughter and I worked on for her birthday party. This butterfly is made from paper that she painted. It is then fan-folded and attached together with pipe cleaner antennas. Cute and simple!

Tigger (Orange Tabby)

Tigger is a 9 year old Orange Tabby. We found Tigger through an animal rescue. He was so excited to get out of the cage and just hugged and licked our necks! Tiggers favorite toy is a pom pom, like the kind you use for arts and crafts. He will chase them all over the house. He loves to sit on top of the computer and keep us company.

Today's Tips:

Ask for Gifts for Others at Your Party

Every year, I have a Christmas open house and invite everyone on my Christmas card list. I usually end up having 50-70 guests show up. It is a blast. Only thing is, I always ended up with several bottles of wine or liquor (we do not drink) and a ton of boxes of candy which I really didn't need. This last year I had a brainstorm. On the invitation, I requested that instead of bringing a hostess gift, the guests bring an item suitable for a young child to be donated to charity. It was a huge success! And the charity organization I donated it to was thrilled.

As an added note, my great-niece did the same thing for her birthday party. She donated all of her presents to the poor.

This very small gesture will bring great joy to those who receive your donated items and will give you and your family a sense of the real meaning of giving.

Make a "Cement" Garden

Put some fun inexpensive color and add interest to your home or yard with only a few dollars worth of paints and some cement! Go on a nature walk and gather some nice branches of whatever size you want to work with and paint them (I prefer spray paint and it is available in a large array of colors these days!)

Dig holes large enough to set your "tree" in cement. If you want to do a mosaic in the cement to use broken china or embed something you want to look at or show off! You could line a dull walk this way or in the back of the yard where it might be boring add perks of color and define your space. Indoors use pots and color that makes you happy and compliments your room!

You can hang a few things like small sun catchers or little chimes or perch a bird-- you could even put the pretty tea cups you love and want to keep on display! Have a lot of fun "cement gardening" it takes a lot less work and money for this than the other kind of gardening and just as sweet to look at!

Pick Pests Off Your Garden for Insect Spray

If you have bugs in your garden, here's an easy, organic and free way to get rid of them. If you're squeamish about this, put on rubber gloves, garden gloves, or latex gloves and pluck the bugs off the plants, one species at a time, and put them in a cupful of water. You'll get used to it enough to do it bare-handed later, which is much easier. It may sound icky, but it works.

Then take the water and pour it into your blender and blend until you can't see the actual critters any more. Put the water into a spray bottle and spray it on the the same plants you took the bugs from. This prompts a "danger, Will Robinson" response from that type of bug and keeps them away.

Just do one kind of bug at a time, be they beetles, aphids or whatever else you encounter. No pesticides, no traps to empty, just a lovely, bug-free garden. And don't worry about the blender. Wash it as usual and it'll be just fine.

Homemade Potty Pad for House Training

I made a potty pad for house training out of a square of an old vinyl table cloth. I put it on the floor and put junk mail flyers or old school papers on it. The dog goes on it as well as the expensive pads. I just throw away the paper and wipe the vinyl down and it is good as new.

Start an Emergency Gift Box

This has saved me so many times. I have a box of goodies. When stuff is on sale, I buy two or three of like pencils, pens, toys, hair stuff, candles, etc. So when someone has a birthday, or baby shower, I go in the box and find an appropriate a gift. Also works as bribery for my 6 year old! I put everything in my box, along with wrapping paper and bags. I am never unprepared.

Egg Carton Seed Starter

Cardboard egg cartons make wonderful little seed starters and they are free unlike mini peat-pots. They disintegrate in the soil and the roots can grow right through them. Fill holes egg-holes with several tablespoons of potting soil then add several seeds. I like to poke a drainage in the bottom. After your seed has sprouted and has grown a tiny bit, you'll need to plant it. Before planting it in the garden, cut out each little pod with a pair of cheap scissors.

* Be sure you only use cardboard egg cartons (not Styrofoam) if they are going to be replanted, as styrofoam won't break down like cardboard will.

Use Baking Soda for Coffee and Tea Cups

I keep a saucer with baking soda in it by my kitchen sink. That way, when I have a cup which is stained, I can get rid of those stains right away with no fuss or bother. I wet my fingers, dip my fingers in the baking soda, and then rub them on the inside of the cup where the stains are. In a flash the stains are gone!

Source: I learned this habit from my mother and so I have the added bonus of remembering her every time I use the baking soda.

Take Pictures on the First and Last Day of School

On the first day of school, make sure you take a photo of your child before they leave the house. On the last day of school, take a photo also so you can see how much they have progressed physically as well as educationally!

Use Wide Mouth Food Saver Sealer With Canister

I recently purchased a large canister for my Foodsaver on Ebay. It evidently is an older model (the lid has a white knob with a red center) and the hose for my new Foodsaver wouldn't fit on it - much less vacuum seal. I called Tilia and they said they don't sell the old hoses, nor will they sell a new lid - you have to buy the entire canister. So, I thought I'd really wasted my money.

I found out from another ebayer that I could take Foodsaver's Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer, place it over the white knob on canister lid, attach the hose to the jar sealer and then vacuum seal the canister. This works just great - the air is drawn out of the canister through the jar sealer, creating a perfect vacuum seal.

I have a Toro Wheel Horse riding mower. I started it and pulled the choke up all the way really fast and now it will not start at all. I have replaced the battery but when I tried to start it, it just smoked. Then I thought it was flooded so I took the spark plug out and put it back in and then it just did not make any noise. Now I am trying to find out what is wrong with it.

Bugs Biting Me In My Sleep

I wake up every night itching and sometimes bitten. I bought a new mattress and box spring for my bed and cleaned and sanitized my entire bed room numerous times. But the problem still exists. I wash my bed sheets and covers every night and vacuum my mattress, box spring, bed rails, and carpet every night. And I look at the sheets to make sure there isn't anything on them before I get in bed.

After falling asleep I find myself waking up all night due to severe itching and small bites, but the bites don't seem as severe since I got the new mattress and box spring. Before the bites would be so bad that I would be bleeding. As soon as I wake up I turn the light on and search the sheets and I do find things in my bed but it doesn't look exactly like a bug.

I find two different things, one is very small, black in color, the other looks like a small seed and is off white in color. Neither one of them move. When I pinch them the black one smashes flat but, the seed looking one is somewhat hard. I have set off insect bombs, but it didn't help. I get no sleep at night therefore I am drained and fall asleep in the day time. At this point I have major dark circles and the whites of my eyes stay red. My fiance thinks it's nothing and that I am just paranoid. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Brown Paper Bag Flooring

I am new, so this is my first post, forgive me if I do something wrong. My question is about brownbagging the floors. Has anyone used the really heavy duty bags like 50 lb. animal feed comes in?

My husband works at a feed mill and can get these without any print on them. My thinking is because they are thicker they will hold up longer on a floor such as in the kitchen where I plan to do this project.

Also, would it be better to use the glue that you use on tiles, to stick the paper down with and then polyurethane it? Which kind of poly would I need to keep the floor light brown like the natural color of the bag? Thank you for any advise or input on this.

Soil Has Eroded Away from Foundation

On one side of my house there are no gutters, expect for a single rain spout. Over time the soil has eroded away from the concrete foundation. I plan to get gutters, relocate that spout and add a small retaining wall. But I know that can get expensive. Does anyone have a solution other than a retaining wall? Could I just add soil and shrubs once I move the rain spout?
