Internet Working Even Though I am Not Signed Up for Service

I can use my laptop in the apartment I just moved into but I don't understand why, since I am not signed up anywhere for the service! How's that?

You are picking up from a neighbor. I lived in an apartment, and neighbors in another apartment realized they were getting internet on their laptop whenever i was connected on my computer.

I too get internet service in the boonies without having any paid service. I get a wi-fi signal. Click on your Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your screen and check the "Connect to" link. It will show you how you are connected. Be sure to go into the Network and Sharing Center to block others from gaining access to your computer for your own protection. This will not prevent you from having access to the internet, but will stop others from being able to see your files, setting, etc.

Your laptop has a built in wireless chip, which must also have a working antenna. It's picking up a nearby signal.

Some Apartments offer free internet service.

You are finding a signal from one of your neighbors if you are using a wireless connection.
