Binky (Poodle/Terrier) in his Halloween Costume

Binky is my 3 year old, poodle/terrier mix that I saved from Animal Control when he was just 8 months old. He loves to go for rides in the car, long walks, loves to run and play with toys, and loves for people to make over him. He has been neutered, is healthy except for seasonal allergies, and loves his rawhide bones.

The photo I have submitted is of Binky with his "kitty-cat" ears on for Halloween. I thought he looked so adorable in them, and I was amazed he sat still so I could put them on him. I am on Social Security Disability. I just lost my other dog, Charlie, who was a border collie mix, that I had for 5-1/2 years, and he was a stray that I rescued from the park. I lost Charlie in February to liver failure, and it was an abosolute heartbreaking experience. I am still not over that loss, but I have Binky.

Bird Nesting in the Water - Building Trust

This is the picture of a bird trying to find twigs and build a nest in the water. She manages to find the twig and is struggling to get it... and all this is happening with about hundreds of people looking around the bird and she does not care as she is sure of not being hurt by anyone.

This is a true example of building trust and not taking them in captivity as they will be more comfortable with your presence.... Don't trouble them, just watch them. FREEDOM...

Today's Tips

Homemade Rubber Mallet

Don't own a rubber mallet? Just cut a slit in a tennis ball and place it on the head of your hammer. Keep the tennis ball in your tool box and you will always have it handy.

Make Your Own Chalkboard

You can make a chalkboard to fit any size of frame. Just take a thin, smooth board (smooth plywood works well for this), cut to the desired size and paint it with dark primer. Let that dry and spray paint it with chalkboard paint, which you can buy at your local hardware store.

Applying Stain To Wood

First sand the wood and remove any dust before staining. A clean, used pair of nylons or panty hose works well for applying stain to wood. The nylon provides an even coat and doesn't leave behind any lint. Wear rubber gloves, it's very difficult to wash stain off your hands without using a nasty chemical like mineral spirits and be sure to wear old clothes. It usually takes at least two coats to get a uniform look.

Refilling Mopping Systems

If you are using one of those mopping systems where the cleaning solution is sprayed onto your floor and it has the pop in kind of bottle on it, when the solution is all used up, do what I did, cut a small hole in the top of the bottle and I refill it with my own solution. That way, it doesn't cost me an arm and leg to wash my floor.

Returning Defective Food Products

In one of your recent postings, someone wrote:

"Ironically, a few days ago, just after I decided this was a topic that needed discussing, I got down my box of oatmeal. Now this is a cardboard box, but it is sealed with a plastic lid. I have saved it to store my oatmeal, since I have begun to buy my oatmeal in bulk. But have not had a problem with it and have been using it several years. It was full of weevils! It took me a minute to realize that they had not gotten into this container....they couldnt get out!"

This brings up one tip that many don't think about.

CALL the company phone number listed on the box and tell them exactly what you found and what you determined to be true.

Almost always, you will get an apology and a coupon for replacement.

I remember one time that I got a very hard (almost tooth-breaking) clump of bunched together chip-material in a bag of tortilla chips. I mailed the bag and the "clump of something" to the address on the bag for the home office of the store.

Not only did I get a letter of apology asking me to go to my local store and get a free replacement bag and four cans of vegetables for my inconvenience, a few weeks letter, UPS delivered a case of assorted products from the actual manufacturer.

Shredded Paper for Gift Baskets

When I make a gift basket, I use the shredded paper from my shredder for filler. Sometimes I shred some colored paper, a comic strip, or some left over gift wrap and use it on top of the plain shredded paper for a fancier basket.

Removing Ball Point Pen From Leather Sofa

Biro (Ballpoint Pen) Stains on Leather

Biro and stains can be removed by the use of pencil eraseres. Bear in mind that pen removers are solvent based and could potentially remove the colour dye. I just cleaned an expensive poppy red leather sofa by putting a speck of water on an eraser and rubbing out the black biro (ballpoint pen) stain. Worked like a dream.

Mini Bulletin Board

I added a "mini" bulletin board above my computer screen. To make the small bulletin board, I covered a long strip of scrap foam with fabric using my glue gun. I then used sticky back velcro to attach it to the top edge of my monitor. Now I have a place to pin memos, passwords, etc. (I work at home so pinning up password is safe - don't do this in an office of course.)

Borrowing Money for Vacation Joke

A young blonde walks into a bank to borrow $10,000 for a European vacation.

The loan officer asks how she'll secure the loan and she points to a new Ferrari. He accepts the title as collateral and parks the car in their underground parking lot.

Two weeks later the blonde returns, repays the loan and the $10.52 interest, and collects her pink slip for the car.

The loan officer says, "When you left two weeks ago, I checked your credit rating. You're a multi-millionaire heiress. Why would you borrow money for a trip?"

The blonde replies, "Where else can I park a new Ferrari in this city for two weeks for $10.52, and expect it to still be there when I return?"

Starting Seedlings

Tips for starting seedlings to plant. Post your ideas.

Using Cottage Cheese and Yogurt Containers

Cottage cheese and/or large(qt) yogurt containers are great for starting plants, and usually fit right inside a decorative pot. Just drill a few holes.

When I want to make a few holes in a plastic container to plant cuttings in it, and I don't want to go get the drill, I use a metal barbecue skewer. I heat the tip in the flame on the stove and it pierces the plastic like butter!

My Finch Has Laid Some Eggs

I have two finch birds a boy and a girl they have laid eggs and I don't know if they are going to hatch. I just received them from a friend and when I got them there was only one egg, the next day there was two. The girl was laying on them, now she is not since I moved her into a different cage and no, I didn't touch them.

What should I do? How long should I wait before I throw the eggs away? Am I suppose to get it warm in the house or should it be at room temperature? These are the first birds that I have ever had.

Thanks,
Kessha Johnson

Perking Up a Condo Deck

I have a deck that does not belong to me but it is part of my condo. it is 5 by 7 feet with a wood floor and ceiling. It has vinyl siding on the walls. The back of my condo is about 100 yards from interstate 95, so it can get pretty loud out there. I have a pot of seedlings out there and some wind chimes.

Any ideas to perk this deck up? Money is a problem, but i would love to have a comfortable chair to sit in. The bugs are pretty bad at times - there are the woods nearby. It burns me up that I have this space that I really don't or can't use it.

Any advice?

Cub Scouts Parade Float Ideas

I am trying to come up with an idea for a cub scout parade float. The theme is "Through the Eyes of a Child". I was thinking of something to do with dreams, wishing upon a star, etc. So maybe foil covered stars, a hanging moon, etc. but I'm not sure what/how to do it. Other ideas might be children's literature (imagination, etc.) Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Applesauce and Molasses Bran Muffins

I recently returned from a vacation that included time spent at Knottsberry Farm and their hotel in California. In the morning my husband and I went to the breakfast buffet in their restaurant. One of the flavors of muffins was bran. I have never tasted such wonderful bran muffins. I inquired as to what made them so moist and was told that they had applesauce and molasses in them. Would any of you readers have a recipe for bran muffins including these 2 ingredients. If so, would you kindly share it with me?

Thank you so much.

Regards,
Joesgirl
