I brought home fleas from the Humane Society once to my cats. I flea dipped, sprinkled stuff on the carpets, sprayed, you name it, and I did it. After a couple of weeks and many flea bites later, a friend suggested Frontline Plus. It prevents the fleas from living on your cat ,and kills the eggs. Regular Frontline doesn't kill the existing eggs on your animal. I got some, and within two days the fleas were gone! I highly suggest it.
Vacuum! And vacuum again! Also, wash everything your cat might have come in contact with, in the hottest water you can get. The flea eggs land in the carpet/rugs, and most likely if you have fleas in the house, they attack humans around the ankles. You should throw away your vacuum cleaner bag after you vacuum for fleas. Vacuum the furniture too. Finally, use Frontline. I know it is expensive and inorganic, but my vet says that it will clean up the house, too, since any fleas hatching out will attack the cat first.

Request: Home Remedies for Fleas

Does anybody have a frugal way to remove fleas from a home and animals that is safe? We have a Yorkie (about 3 lb) and a cat that is a lot bigger. The fleas came home on us from my parents' home and infested our home. I'm trying to control two homes. Any ideas?
I've had very good success with all my dogs over the years, 30+ years, giving them a garlic tab every day. They have no fleas, fleas ready don't like garlic. (10/14/2009)
Dawn is correct. You can even spray your carpets with a light mixture of Dawn mixed with water in a spray bottle, if your dog comes into the house or your yard and has a lot of fleas which can attach to your pants and shoes when you come into the house. Also I make garlic dog biscuits for my dog, using a small amount of garlic. My vet says garlic is safe for dogs in small amounts, but NOT for cats at all (for those cat lovers out there). Good luck! I don't want to sound like a commercial, but I am telling you K9 Advantix is the best stuff in the world. Our big (55lb) dog had fleas so bad and we wasted a lot of time and money trying out everything under the sun, home remedies and bought different medications and the baby was still miserable. I lucked out and bought the k9 Advantix and was able to buy it at the vet one month at a time for $13.00 a month. We put it on him one night and the next day his bed was covered in dead fleas. He has been flea free ever since.
It also has a mosquito repellent to it which helps a lot since he spends most of the day in his yard. Scooby and I both say, "Thank God for it". Oh, this is different from Advantage flea medicine, so be sure to get the K9 Advantix, not Advantage (Advantage requires a trip to the vet to check for heart worms or they won't give it to you). Best advice I can give! (07/22/2009)
I have 4 dogs ranging in size from 12 lbs. to 45 lbs. and a cat. I need a really good home remedy for fleas and a good remedy for a large yard. All of my animals have been either strays or put in my yard. I love all of them and hate to see them suffer from fleas. Going to the vet for all of them is too expensive for me right now while in college. I really need your help.

RE: Home Remedies for Fleas
The safest product out there is Wondercide. It is safe for people and pets of all ages. You can treat your yard and house as well as your pets. The smell only lasts for about 30 min. You can get it online, or some groomers may carry it. (11/22/2008)
My basement was infested with fleas and did not know what to do and could not afford Terminix nor other pesticide companies. Here is how I got rid of these annoying critters. I simply went to the $.99 store and purchased about 10 bottle of Pine Oil. This can be found in the home cleaning sections.
I just poured the pine oil all over the floor and that was it. I did it about four times as the pine oil kills not all of them at the same time, but with 3 more applications I was able to get rid of all of them. Note my basement is concrete and not carpeted. (11/30/2008)

Dawn dish soap works wonders for fleas on any animal. Wash your pet with Dawn dish soap and let it sit for roughly 10 minutes. To kill fleas in areas of your house, mix dish soap with warm water in a spray bottle. Even your portions to about half soap and half water. Spray all areas. (01/10/2009)

I am a pet groomer and have been for years. Borax is the best. We groomers use it in our salons as well to control fleas. Just pour in a Carpet Fresh container and sprinkle as if you were using Carpet Fresh and that's it. I use it often along with my Carpet Fresh and I have 1 cat and 1 dog in my home. I have no fleas. Hope that is helpful. (01/27/2009)

RE: Home Remdies for fleas
I have three small dogs that love to be outdoors, but unfortunately they also have a flea problem. I have tried the flea treatments that you put on their back with no effect. As a matter of fact one of them had a severe allergic reaction to it. Anyhow, I tried the Apple Cider vinegar tip and was pleasantly surprised that it works. I used half and half vinegar and water in a spray bottle and worked the solution into their coats followed up with a flea comb to get rid of the dead fleas. They really don't like the smell, but once dry the smell goes away.
I would definitely recommend this treatment to get rid of fleas. I am now trying the Borax treatment for the house. (07/05/2009)
