Daily Thrifty Tips - January 30, 2007

Volume Six, Number 20, January 30, 2007

Hello,

You probably noticed that we didn't send out newsletters on Monday. We had some major server problems that we were wrestling with for most of the day. Due to that and other problems we have decided to move our newsletter sending to Constant Contact. It will cost us a bit more to publish newsletter but hopefully we will have less mail server problems and more people will receive their newsletters. An added benefit is we now can send out the newsletter in HTML format!

The next couple of days, we will be working to shift the newsletter sign up forms over to Constant Contact. In the meantime, there is a link at the bottom of every newsletter that allows you to edit your name, email address and subscribe/unsubscribe to any of our newsletters.

If you have any problems reading the new emails please let us know.

Here's today's featured request:

Shelby (Collie)

Shelby is our 2 year old Collie. I got him for Christmas this year from my husband. We lost our female collie a few months before and my heart was broken so my husband found Shelby for me in Illinois. He's wonderful!

He loves to run in the yard and play with Jazmin, our older Golden Retriever mix and chew on rawhide! Most of all, he loves to snuggle with me! Such a sweetheart and SO beautiful! A very good boy!

Jake (Husky/Border Collie)

Jake is my Husky/Border Collie (I think). I got him 4 years ago. He is 4 years old.

He likes to play with his many toys and going for walks and car rides. Jake is the most loving dog I have ever had and there's been a few. He is gentle and loves attention. He has to be everywhere I am. I work construction and he goes on the road with me everywhere, no matter where I am.

Scanning Your Children's Pictures

My 2 year old Ellie goes to a parents morning out program two times a week. We call it "school". They do so many cute little art projects or special colorings to go w/ their lessons for the day. Since many of my family is out of state I scan everything that I can and e-mail it to them. So they can be apart of her everyday moments. You could even go so far to do an online "artbook".

View from the Office

This makes it worth while to come to work each day. This is a picture of what I look out at each day from my desk through French doors.

It makes for a more stress free day and so relaxing and just makes you give extra thanks to God for all that he gives.

Give Leftover Paint to Theatre Groups

If you have leftover paint of ANY quantity or type, contact your local community theater group or high school drama department and see if they can use it. I belong to a community theater group and we are ALWAYS needing paint to create the backdrops and sets for our shows!

USA.gov and Surplus Auctions

The federal government's website http://www.usa.gov (formerly FirstGov.gov) has a lot of interesting government information. For example, surplus property auctions for state and federal agencies, including colleges, are listed at http://www.usa.gov/shopping/shopping.shtml. They list links to each state, where they're selling everything from Palm Pilots to sofas, all used and sold "as-is", many shown in photos. Many states also have on-line auctions. All the necessary info is on each website. If you're searching for a bargain, this is a good place to look.

Cooking With Cast Iron Pans

I have a cast iron pan that has been around for many years. It is very well seasoned and I don't clean it with soap, just hot water. But after making ground beef with chili seasoning or any other meal with a lot of spices, (stir fry, fish) the aroma stays in the pan.

If I want to make pancakes or grilled cheese or anything that would absorb the prior seasoning, I first take some canola oil, or butter if I am making pancakes or grilled cheese, heat it up in the pan and then use a paper towel to wipe out the hot pan. This absorbs most of the seasoning aroma and only a few times have I had to do this twice. This method keeps the pan well seasoned but removes aromas that would transfer to whatever I am cooking. Just be careful as the pan will be hot!

My First Recipe: Ellie and her Daughter

Well, my first recipe wasn't actually a recipe as such, it was a combination of things to make the evening meal in the big, loving, foster parented home I was living in. I was 16, and did all of the evening meal myself, hot corned beef, mashed (creamed) potatoes and green beans. I was SO proud of myself!

I also remember my daughter's first recipe. She was eleven at the time, and concocted something she named "Bon Orange", which was just oranges peeled and sliced up, dropped into a bowl with their juice, and sprinkled over the top with coconut. We still laugh over the memory of "Bon Orange".

Uses for Hotel Shoe Shining Cloths

My son travels a lot and one of the things he does is save the hotel shampoos, soaps, shower caps, etc. When he comes home, he brings me a huge bag of goodies that I sort through. Lately he has brought me shoe shine cloths. At first, I could not think of anything I could do with them but then I started looking at them and realized they are will be great for polishing furniture, cleaning glass polishing fixtures, etc. These are great and some will even wash up in the washing machine! I love finding uses for things out of the ordinary.

Paper Box Training

To paper box train your pug puppy be patient. Bring the puppy to the box right after it wakes up and eats and plays. Say, "go potty." Once, it does praise him or her and give kisses.

Hug Your Candles

To prevent wasting candles, simply "HUG" your candle each time before you blow it out. Cup both hands around the top of the candle and fold the softened wax toward the wick area. Be careful not to drown the wick in the melted wax. Before lighting the candle again, pinch off the burnt wick so only about a 1/4 inch of the wick remains. At the end of the candle's life, there will be NO waste whatsoever.

By Cindy from Vero Beach Florida

Editor's Note: This works especially well with the big pillar candles, 3-6 inches in diameter.

Fixing Flaws in Garments

As my mother used to tell me, sometimes you can get away with things (repairs, flaws) if "they don't show." When my favorite black sweatshirt got white blotches on the sleeves, I colored them in with a black permanent marker. The match isn't perfect, but I always scrunch up the sleeves, anyway, so it doesn't show. And I have just added lots of more life to an old favorite.

Products For Those With Alzheimer's

My uncle had Alzheimer's disease and it is such a hard disease for all to cope with. I found a wonderful catalog that is called "The Alzheimer's Store" at http://www.alzstore.com. It has some really good ideas for helping the family and caregivers. It has so much that you can purchase to make it easier for all concerned. If you don't want to purchase the item, maybe you can "make" your own substitute, or use the idea that is in the catalog.

Applying Skin Cream Tip

I use a very expensive skin care system. I have discovered that if I apply the cream to my face when it is still wet, a very little goes a long way and you still get the same results. I keep the cleanser/face cream part of the system in my shower and every morning when I jump in the shower, there it is! I just simply add a dab to my skin and massage it in. I have tried it both ways, applying on dry skin vs. applying to moist skin and, I assure you, I have seen no difference. This allows me to stretch the products and I don't have to buy as often. It also allows me to use a product I would normally not be able to use because it lasts at least twice as long applied this way.

New Requests

Stinky Towels

I don't have a problem with my washer making my towels and dishrags smell. It is the men in my house. If you use a towel, it is wet or damp and then leave it in a lump on the floor or bed, it will start smelling. My bathroom smells after my son uses his already smelly towel. It is disgusting. I am ready to bleach the stinky ones even if it ruins the color.

Mysterious Grease Stains on Clothing

I was wondering what causes grease like stains on our clothes. They are not greasy when they go into the washer, but when I dry them I can have small dots and or very large patches of what looks like grease stains.

New sheet sets, kids (not baby goats) clothes, my clothes, dark, light, you name it. I use both powdered and liquid soap. My machine has a bleach dispenser and a dispenser for liquid fabric softener (which I don';t use). I put the soap in the bottom of the machine, let the water run to about half way, mix it up really well then start adding my clothes.

This is very frustrating!

Someone told me it could be from the soap and the clothes sitting too close to it before is starts to agitate. So I have tried to put the soap in after but I got the same results. I do not see it as much on my white loads, but that could just be because they are lighter.

I am finding this very annoying and I figure some of you very bright people may have some sort experience with this type of thing or have had experienced this before and have a fabulous solution!

So, I am sitting anxiously by the computer awaiting any and all answers. Oh, yes, I should mention that my machine is a top loader, capacity super loads and I always use the large amount of water with room for the clothes to swim around in. So they rinse really well.

Graduation Party Ideas

I need help with a graduation party. I have very limited income but it is for my son who is the light of my life and I am so proud of for getting to where he is at--college bound. He doesn't really want it at our home. It isn't the nicest place. I can get a hall for $50 an hour but he doesn't want the caterer that will give me a discount. I also would like to have it on graduation day which I don't like but family will be in from out of town that day. Any frugal suggestions would be welcome.
