Daily Thrifty Tips - February 2, 2009

Vol. 8, Num. 22, February 2, 2009 (Read It Online)

The CDC updated their page on the Salmonella outbreak. Here are some of the tips they had for consumers:

  • Consumers who have recalled products in their homes should discard those products.

  • Consumers also should avoid eating products made with peanut butter, peanut paste, or other peanut-containing products if they are unsure whether these products have been recalled.

  • National brands of jarred peanut butter sold in grocery stores have not been implicated in this outbreak.

  • Consumers with pets should know that some pet foods and pet treats may contain peanut butter, including dog biscuits and bird food. If you have a recalled pet product in your household, do not feed it to your pet or other animals.

You can read more of their update here:

http://cdc.gov/salmonella/typhimurium/update.html

There have been a lot more products recalled in the last week, way more than we can highlight here. You can find list of recent recalls here:

http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html

At this point, we would caution against eating any product containing peanut butter. Certainly, a lot of products are safe, but it's better to proceed with caution than to eat something that may cause serious harm to you or a loved one.

Craft: Snowman Scene

Easy for the youngest of crafters!

First, make a snowman. I wanted to use big marshmallows dipped in paint to make the print of the snowman body, but we were out. Instead, we glued on cotton balls. I used the large type. Then use a marker to add a hat, eyes, nose, buttons, and arms.

Add lots of snowflakes using dried pasta. Take a shape like a wagon wheel or anything round and dip one side in white paint, then stamp onto your paper.

Allow to dry and hang to enjoy!

Use Petroleum Jelly to Keep Your Skin Soft and Smooth

I remember hearing this frugal beauty trick from both the late Eartha Kitt and Doris Day. Petroleum Jelly: use it at night as night lotion on your face. It does rub off on the pillow some. I also use it to take off makeup, too. Once a week, I use it all over my body, cover up with pajamas, socks, and cotton gloves before going to bed. It works better than the most expensive lotion. I am fifty and people think I am in my thirties because of my skin.

Organizing Tax Season

Every January I set up a new manila folder and mark it with the year. Then every time I have a receipt or statement I need to save, I just put it in the folder. Come tax season all the paperwork is in one place.

Use Photos to Make Greeting Cards

I have not bought a greeting card of any kind for more years than I can remember. How easy it is to make all kinds of beautiful cards with personalized photos from your own computer. Print Shop is the software I began with but I have used Print Artist for years. My grandchildren have made their own school valentines using this program. I can't remember the time they bought Valentine's cards for their friends. If you are a photography buff many of your very own photos can be easily inserted in your cards. And pick your own words or special quote to insert inside the card. When you are finished you will wonder why you ever spent money on those store bought cards.

Another good idea is making your own gifts. Friends enjoy handmade gifts much more than the store bought kind. When I was newly married I made gifts out of necessity, but I have kept up that tradition since, for over 40 years now. The list of patterns and ideas is endless if you search on Google or Yahoo. You don't have to spend any money for almost all of the good ideas out there. Try with a simple gift like a hand painted flower pot given with a pkg. of seeds tied to it with a beautiful bow. Go pick up that Christmas ribbon that is on sale now for next to nothing.

Truly, truly, you can save so much money now with going handmade; handmade cookie mixes in jars (yes, those recipes are out there for nothing too), hand made cards and sentimental notes, handmade everything (soap, hand creams, etc.) A little footwork will get you going with absolutely stunning and very satisfying rewards.

Remove Snow Buildup from Wheel Wells

With all the very cold weather most parts of the US has been experiencing, you may have noticed icy snow build-up in the wheel wells of your front and back tires. An easy way to remove it is to use a garden trowel or a putty knife to chip away at it until it falls off.

Puffed Paint for Marking Underwear

If your underwear doesn't have sizing tags, it's a very good idea to label them yourself. It makes it easier for you to know where to place it, in which child's drawer it belongs. I personally like to use puffed paint size them. It's great to use assorted colors. Every size a different color, so the children, even the little ones, choose their size by seeing their color. Puffed paint never wears out, it always lasts.

Organizing Housework for the New Year

Looking back on 2008 and housework. Don't you wish you could make a new plan to keep things organized and washing caught up? Trust me, it is possible! I'd like to suggest a few tips to frustrated and overwhelmed Homemakers that I've used for many years. I've passed them down to my Daughter and Sons as well. Fortunately, she picked up on it! As for the sons, well, they're still struggling but I figure one out of three ain't bad!

First, use the month of January to reorganize. Unfortunately, to do this you'll need to invest in storage products. After the Holidays, there are a lot of plastic crates, etc on sale. It doesn't matter if it's red and green or a holiday design, who cares! Go through one a closet at a time. To attempt more than one at a time gets you feeling overwhelmed, so keep it down to one.

  • Go through clothes and make piles of clothes for discarding. If it hasn't been worn in 6 months it more than likely won't be worn.
  • Yard Sale Items and clothes: If you're REALLY ambitious, go ahead and price and tag them. When finished, box up or crate them up and you'll be ready for the next sale.
  • If you're like me, you have craft items in there. Do a craft item box and next time you look for them you know where they're at (and that's sure a good feeling).
  • If you have several skeins of yarn or several pair of shoes, the pocketed hanging organizer works wonders. The absolute best ones are the canvas ones which have have little "cubby" pockets. These take up very little space and it's amazing how much these will hold.
  • As for toys, use the same plan as the clothes. If it hasn't been played with for 6 month, discard, Yard sale, or donate it. Goodwill stores, etc will write you a tax donation slip for tax use.
  • Items that are in your closet and out of place: Take the time to put it back where it goes. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day and this will take time, but it's a great feeling to see an organized closet. Use the crates for the items you must store. Using an index card, or simply paper and tape, make a label to let you know what's inside. Then you won't need to dig to find what's inside.

My second suggestion is to form new habits concerning dish washing and laundry. Try this for a week or so and you'll make it a practice. If you're fortunate enough to have a dishwasher, do not go to bed without loading it. If you hand wash, use the same practice. Same with laundry, once you make one big laundry "catch-up day", make a practice to wash the days clothes before bedtime. If you do this; you can keep yourself caught up.

Now I want you to know, I'm not SUZY HOMEMAKER, by any means, but I raised three kids using this method. A piled up house and laundry room makes for a frustrated Mom. And you know the old saying "If Mom ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" Speaking of happy, Happy New Year!

Healthy Snacks to Avoid Dieting Mistakes

When you are dieting, you find yourself STARVING and eating everything till your hunger diminishes. Take the time NOW to make a list of allowed foods on a 100 calorie or less snack list.

If you do this when you are NOT hungry, it is more helpful. Then use the list to go shopping with. If you can have shelf stable snacks you can grab or certain things in the fridge (yogurt, cheese stick, etc) you may find yourself not grabbing something high caloric and unfulfilling.

Personally, I keep a can of roasted and raw unsalted almonds. 7 of them are what is the count. Eat them slowly, really TASTE them, feel the texture with your tongue. Make eating an experience, not a just food to mouth thing you do. Eating unsalted nuts (your choice) will help by not craving more or a soda to go with them. That salt IS an enticer!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Rosita got lost in her car in a snowstorm. She remembered what her dad had once told her. "If you ever get stuck in a snow storm, wait for a snow plow and follow it."

Pretty soon a snow plow came by, and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about forty-five minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing. She explained that her dad had told her if she ever got lost in a snowstorm, to follow a plow.

The driver nodded and said, "Well, I'm done with the Wal-Mart parking lot now, but you can follow me over to K-Mart"

Keeping Copperhead Snakes Out of My Yard

Is there a snake I can keep around my property that will either eat or drive away copperheads? Last year we counted 5 different copperheads in our yard. As far as I know there are still there. I have a 7 year old and a 2 year old who think snakes are great. My 2 year old thinks she can play with them so I am terrified she will get to close to a venomous one. I won't kill them but if I can get a non-venomous snake to move in to take their place it would be great.

Ideas for a Family Reunion

I'm working on our 1st family reunion. I'm the next to oldest of 10. I want to have each of the siblings wear a different color shirt and have all their children and grandchildren also wear their color. I'm looking for a way to personalize them. I may end up making about 75 in all. I need something that is inexpensive yet looks nice and washable. I'm also looking for games and crafts that could be done by a wide variety of ages and abilities.

I would welcome any cool ideas anyone would have to offer. My dad will be 84 and the oldest son will be 62 by then, just to give you an idea about the ages. The youngest is going to be 45 this summer. Most of us have grandchildren already and some even step-great-grandchildren. My son and his wife and their two sons live in Korea and will be here for the reunion. One other thing, my grandson really got the idea of the family reunion started by asking to know more about my family. Now we found out that he will be called up in May to go to Iraq.

I feel so sad that he can't be here to meet all his aunts and uncles, cousins and even his great grandfather. He was under one the only time they met. Does anyone have any ideas how help make this better for him? Thank you for any ideas anyone can suggest.
