Oregon Boys Playing In Leaves

Here are my two boys "helping" rake leaves. It was a beautiful fall day; not too cold, clear skies. Perfect weather for making some leaf angels. Don't worry, they helped clean up afterward.

Kiya and Keon (English/American Staffordshire)

Kiya is 2 1/2 years old and is an English Staffie. Keon is 1 1/2 and is an American Staffie. We got them both in October, Keon last year and Kiya the year before.

They like to play with the goats and the sheep. And swim and play tug-o-war. They hate the horses on their land. They love their food and sleep and they love to go for a drive in the back of the ute.

Happy Thanksgiving

I would just like to wish one and all a very Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless.

Theresa from Hibbing, MN

Editor's Note: Thanks Theresa.

The staff at ThriftyFun would like to wish all of our readers a Happy Thanksgiving as well. I hope everyone has a fun and restful holiday. We are very thankful to everyone that takes time to read and contribute to this site! One thing that is important to remember about Thanksgiving is it's not how much you spend, but it's how well you spend your time. Here's a feedback that was posted in response to a recent Saving Money On... Newsletter that illustrates this point:

"When I was first divorced with 1, 4, 7, 10 year olds, I was overwhelmed with the holidays! When they went to their father's I invited all the "orphans" (people without families) to bring potluck to my home and we had a wonderful time.

Another time when they were 3, etc. we volunteered to help at a Houston-wide charity dinner. I ended up holding a baby so the homeless mother could eat in peace, and my children procured clothes for the baby and the mother from the tables of free clothing. My youngest asked why they couldn't come home with us -- 'I share my cwib with baby!" That was truly a moment where I knew my kids were on the right track! It did more for us than anything!"

Happy Thanksgiving!

Treat Yourself When Trying to Eat Less

I love my chocolate ice cream, but I know too much of a good thing is not necessarily good, so I unintentionally discovered a great way to indulge myself without all the guilt about too much fat and cholesterol, and too many calories. Now when I get the urge, I serve myself a small treat in one of my mother's heirloom tea cups. Eating from something so beautiful makes even a small amount of any treat extra special.

Use Hard Boiled Egg Water For Houseplants

Cheap and easy feed for houseplants. When you boil eggs - save the water. Sieve out any pieces of egg that may have busted out during boiling. This water, when completely cooled, contains lots of minerals from the egg shell and makes a good feed for houseplants and can be used as often as you water.
Kindest regards -

Carpet Cleaner For Canvas Sneakers

A great way to clean canvas sneakers is to lay them on an old towel on top of the washer. Spray them with foamy carpet cleaner (you can get it for $1 at the dollar store) inside and out. Let them sit for a couple of hours, then throw them into the washer. Wash them in warm water with regular laundry detergent. They'll come out much whiter again.

Season Holiday Cooking With Fresh Herbs

If you're looking to enliven your holiday staples, skip the recipe overhaul and think minor tweaks with greenery.

Fresh herbs are a fast and simple way to enhance tried-and-true recipes, even ones already heavily seasoned with dried herbs. Switching to fresh can give a dish a whole new feel and flavor.

Use Neosporin To Treat a Sty

I had a really bad sty on the under portion of my eye. I did an internet search that said you needed to go to a doctor. for antibiotics. I found that by using my Neosporin (it has antibiotics in it) it healed up the sty in 3-5 days. I found relief from hot washcloths but this is the only thing that actually cured it.

Lego Bathroom Decor

My son and husband really enjoy building things with Lego - so I decided to redecorate our bathroom in Lego for them as a Christmas surprise.

The LEGO website had some embroidered bath towels at clearance prices, so I bought one for each family member. I found a set of twin sheets on ebay - the flat sheets will become the shower curtain, and the pillow cases will become the cafe-curtains for the window. We have a small shelving unit with baskets for our personal items, and I will make liners for those with the leftover sheet fabric. I will probably take a strip and put it on the end of a solid colored hand towel. I am using some yard-sale find blocks to build a box for our tissue box to go in, and if I can figure out the logistics, may also do the same for a toothbrush holder.

To make the shower curtain, I will take the flat sheet and spread it out over the top of my existing shower curtain to check the size. If it is too long, I will keep the "cuff" of the sheet as the bottom hem, and cut off at the top, folding it over 3 times to form a new hem. If it is too narrow, I can take fabric from the fitted sheet and sew it vertically to make a wider panel. I will mark button holes in the new top hem to line up with my existing curtain and then put the rings through the holes. I am hot gluing bricks to the outside of plain clear plastic rings.

I will post photos when we get it all together (and the bathroom is clean!)

Save Plastic Fruit Containers For Storing Small Items

My wife buys Dole mandarin oranges for my son. The jars the oranges are packed in are a durable plastic, and the label is the kind that can be easily and completely removed. Since it is not glass (and therefore unbreakable), these jars will make great storage for all manner of things in a workshop, sewing room, etc.

Extra Cupcakes for the Kids

You can have your cake and eat it too! My three small children used to be disappointed when we made cupcakes for bake sales or school events - all those yummy cupcakes and they couldn't have one! Then I started reserving some of the batter to make 3 mini cupcakes just for them. Now I have 2 dozen cupcakes and 3 happy kids.

Hit the Power Button

Has your computer ever been frozen and your just frustrated? Well here is a new way to fix it! Do not, I repeat, do not get a computer dude. Just hit the power button on the control tower and let it reboot. If this doesn't work then it's serious, get a computer dude.

Source: This family tip book! (this is only at my house)!

By Lauren from Clarkston, MI

Editor's Note: Restarting your system like this should be a last resort as it is really hard on the computer and can cause more problems long term. If your computer freezes, grab a cup of coffee and give it 5 minutes to complete its task. You can also force quit individual programs. If you are having lots of problems like this, it is probably time to optimize your hard drive and do other preventative maintenance.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The pro football team had just finished its daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting onto the field.

While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to the head coach and demanded a tryout. Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line.

When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach shouted, "You're terrific! Sign up for the season, and I'll see to it that you get a huge bonus."

"Forget the bonus," the turkey said. "All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day?"

Water from Well Staining Everything

I recently purchased a home that has a well water. It has a nasty sulfur smell and anywhere the water has touched is rusty and tarnished. I am having to learn to do housework all over again at the age of 48! I am lost. I have no idea of how to clean anything as my old ways are now gone. The smell, well I have researched a bit and the only way I'm going to get rid of the proverbial rotten egg smell is to get an indoor Greensand or some kind of indoor aeration system to cleanse the water before it reaches the pipes. That is so expensive that I can't do that at the moment so I'm going to be satisfied if I can at least get things to sparkle again!
Thanks in advance for any advise from "a kindred sulfur soul".

Home Hair Highlighting Kits

Are there any professional hairdressers here? I need to get my hair highlighted and want to know if the at home kits are safe. I only need a few done and it's so expensive in the salon and even the beauty school charges the min. of $30. Last time I had my hair done, the stylist went on and on about the home ones not being safe- that some contain lead and copper? Any suggestions? thanks

Teaching a Preschooler Piano

I want to teach my preschooler piano. He's three - should I wait until a bit older to have lessons? I've seen the program you can buy that puts numbers on the keys and the music notes are the numbers - has anyone tried this? He knows his numbers so that would work. Thanks!

Help Organizing 40 Years of Photos

Help! I am putting 40 years worth of photos into albums! What a mess, and its so difficult to categorize them.. according to ages and which grandchild age to put where when they are all together w/family! I wish we could have afforded picture albums then! I've been doing this for 2 weeks and every room of my house is mess picture piles everywhere on every table!

All of that to ask you this; my daughter is on her 3rd marriage (and her last!) so the problem is, do you put the pictures of the children's fathers in the album too? I don't want to offend my son in law now. The mom and dad are in the pictures with the kids too. I'm trying to leave out the ones where they are standing too close etc. But the pictures are so good! What do you do in this case?

I think my grandsons should be able to see their dads in the pictures from their *babyhood* along w/ their mom. One of the dads we DON'T care for.. but I want to be fair to the child. I even thought of carefully cutting out his face or something lol but I don't want to ruin the picture. OR making a private album and keeping it hid. Then at least one day maybe the kids will get to see it...or not. I can't be the only one who this bugs. What do you do in this case?
