School Bus Cake

A school bus cake I made for a school carnival. The bus is made from a loaf pan cake and the cab is a miniature loaf, the lights are spice drops cut in half, the driver, and children are HEB buddy graham crackers.

Avoid Flashed Out Photos With Your Finger

This is a tip for those pictures where you need a flash but then you take the picture and it totally whites your picture, but if you take the picture without the flash it's too dark. Try putting your finger in the middle of your flash. It still lets the flash do it's job but at the same time, limits the light but not too much! Try it. It works!

Arranging Wall Picture Groupings

When I moved into my home 2 years ago, I started each day by facing a large blank wall. The wall was in my bathroom and faced my glass enclosed shower. Fortunately, thrift store "art" came to my rescue!

I made a plan and began purchasing framed pictures at local thrift stores. I only purchased pictures that contained flowers, had a gold frame, and cost $5 or less. There were no exceptions to this budget and many pictures were purchased for $0.50 to $2. For less than $100, I soon had what I needed to create my flower wall.

To determine how the pictures would be hung, I started by placing 4 pictures on the floor to form the corners of the grouping and limit the size to the wall space available. These eventually became pictures 1, 4, 9, and 12. I then placed the 2 large pictures that I wanted inside the grouping. Pictures 18 and 19 were placed at a diagonal to pictures 1 and 9. With the exception of pictures 18 and 19, any two pictures that formed a set were spaced at random points in the grouping. Examples are pictures 5 and 11, 8 and 12, 9 and 16. I had one set of three and found that 3 coordinating pictures did not do well in what was intended to be a random grouping. Various groupings were tried on the floor until I was satisfied with the plan. The common color of gold frames and common theme of flowers unified the grouping. A theme and/or color scheme for your grouping is recommended.

Even with a "floor plan", hanging the pictures on the wall can be a challenge. Some people, tape together newspaper, draw around each frame in the floor plan, then tape the newspaper to the wall as a guide. I didn't find that method to be satisfactory. Below is the measurement method I finally developed to determine where to place the nails and avoid multiple nail holes in the wall. It may seem complicated, but it actually worked well for me.

I learned thrift stores are a treasure trove for new or gently used wall art. Many still have the price tags and protective corners in place. I have pictures of fruits, vegetables, and herbs hanging in my kitchen; all are thrift store finds. I am now buying mirrors of various sizes and shapes to create another wall grouping. The $5 budget still applies to each item.

I have other pictures hanging in my home that were purchased years ago and cost more. I tend to spend more time admiring my thrift store art, because I begin each day facing a wall of flowers that reminds me to be creative and thrifty.

Measurements To Hang Pictures: I started by hanging corner pictures 1, 4, 9, and 12. Again these 4 pictures determined the overall size of the grouping. To hang picture #1, measure the distance from the bottom edge of the sawtooth hanging bracket to the bottom edge of the frame and add the distance the frame should be from the bottom of the wall or in my case the tile border. Then measure from the center of the sawtooth bracket to the edge of the frame and add the distance the frame should be from the corner of the wall. The intersection of these two measurements determines the location of the first nail. Use this method to measure from the hanging bracket to the top side or bottom of the picture as needed to determine the nail positions of pictures 4, 9, and 12.

Pictures 2 and 3 were hung next by taking the following measurements.

  1. 34 inches = distance between top of picture 1 and bottom of picture 4 as they hung on the wall

  2. 28 inches = total length of pictures 2 and 3 with frames touching

  3. 6 inches (34 minus 28) = total space needed between pictures 1 and 4 when hanging

  4. 2 inches (6 divided by 3) = distance between pictures

To hang picture 2, measure the distance from the bottom edge of the sawtooth bracket to the bottom edge of the frame and added the distance between pictures (2). This is the distance the nail should be ABOVE THE TOP EDGE of picture #1. Then measure from the center of the sawtooth bracket to the edge of the frame and add the distance from the corner of the wall. Now you have the nail position. After hanging picture #2, double check your remaining wall space needed above and below picture #3 by repeating steps 1 through 4 above measuring only the distance between pictures 2 and 4. Measure from the top, bottom, or side as needed to determine the placement of remaining border pictures.

Have a "Grandmother" Baby Shower

I was recently invited to a "Grandmother Baby Shower" for a friend who was expecting her first grandchild. The idea of the shower is to give the grandparent useful things to have at "her" house.

I had purchased this wagon several years ago because I thought it was so cute. I decided to make it a place to hold diaper and bath items; wipes, baby oil, baby head to toe wash, baby q-tips, and cotton balls. The baby came two days before the day of the shower. So having found out the child's name, I used some plastic stick on letters and put the child's name on the side of the wagon.

I also put in a baby boy motif picture frame, baby bib, bottle brush and wrapped a silver infant feeding spoon. Oops, I almost forgot, I put in a package of rubber furniture cups to make the wagon stationary on top of a chest/changing table.

When the child gets a little older, he can use the wagon as his first "little red wagon" It was truly a real wagon. The handle is covered by all the things in the wagon. I then placed it into a large gift bag but had the grandparent pull the wagon out with the name facing her. She was thrilled!

As you can see, it turned out to be quite precious! I am going to be on the lookout for another one to keep here for the next baby shower.

Toby (Jack Russell Terrier/Rat Terrier)

Toby is a 10 week old Jack Russell Terrier/Rat Terrier mix. We rescued him from the animal shelter. He was getting ready to go to puppy rescue that same day. He loves to play with and bother our 65lb Black Lab, "Missy". He loves to ride. He also loves to watch our grandson play baseball.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Use Rubber Bands to Close Bags

We keep all rubberbands that come into the house (on newspapers, vegetables, etc.) in a basket in the kitchen. We use these to hold bags closed - chips, rice, sugar, anything that can be kept in its original bag. Just curl the top of the bag until it reaches the treasure inside, then run the rubber band around the bag from top to bottom. Contents stay fresh and contained!

Paint Panel Door With Chalkboard Paint

We have an old home. The doors have 4 panels in them. I painted the door panels with chalkboard paint carried at home improvement stores. I then painted the name of each grandchild on a panel. The older children got the higher panels with younger children getting lower panels. I keep chalk in the house and use wet paper towels for cleaning. Even teenagers put something on their panel. A great extra; I frequently get loving messages; even from friends' visiting children.

Free Lessons and Entertainment Online

Do you want to learn to play the piano or perhaps take voice lessons? Maybe taking art lessons is more your cup of tea. You can learn to play the guitar and even go to youtube and learn to play the ukulele. All for free. You can take free online classes from universities.

You can visit the National Zoo online or view the Otter Cam at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. See the great art of the world or explore the universe.

You can see exhibits at the Smithsonian Institute. You can watch a waterhole in Africa via webcam and watch the animals drink. All for free.

Just search the internet for whatever you want, it's probably out there.

Refrigerator Doesn't Stay Cold

I haven't sent a tip in a long time. Here is one that may help. If your refrigerator is not cooling as it should, the defrosting mechanism in the freezer may have gone out and the defroster coils are iced up. If you don't have money to run out and buy a new refrigerator, here is what you can do.

Two years ago, we paid about $200.00 to get the defroster in our freezer replaced. Well, lo and behold, it went out again last week. Since my husband and I watched the repairman and my husband helped him, we know what to do. First, unplug the refrigerator. Remove all the shelves from the freezer. Take the panel from the inside back of the freezer.

You will need a screwdriver and/or wrench of the right size to undo the screws. Plug the drain hole in the bottom of the freezer to keep water from dripping through to the floor. You will see an ice buildup on coils at the inside back of the freezer. Get plenty of old towels. Put one in the bottom of the freezer and change it when it becomes soaked. Melt the ice with a hairdryer.

Use common sense and don't get any water on the hair dryer or let the floor get wet. It may take two people to do this; one to use the hairdryer and the other to handle the wet towels. When you get the ice melted, put the panel back in and it will run fine until it ices up again; we let ours go a week before we thawed it again. Don't forget to plug it back in.

If you decide to get a repairman, it will save his time (and your money) if you have it ice-free when he comes. I may get a less-than-year-old Energy Star refrigerator from my friend in June and it seems silly to spend the money on getting the more than ten-year-old fridge repaired. So, we are going to do this once a week until then.

Sanitize Your Home

If someone is sick in your home or you are worried about the swine-flu, here's a tip: Take a small spray bottle and fill it with plain rubbing alcohol. Now spray everything your family touches: Door knobs (inside and out), light switches, toilet flushing handle, keyboard and mouse, microwave buttons, refrigerator door handle, cupboards and knobs, steering wheel and shifter, your car's armrest, car keys, TV remote, your kids toys and joy stick and any other place it's safe to spray that your family frequently touches!

I've always done this when someone in my household is sick but my roommate thought I was crazy. I bet she's doing the same thing now that we have a possible killer flu pandemic!

* Also don't forget to wash your hands often and keep them away from your nose and eyes! And if you do get sick, it's best to cough into your sleeve and not into your hand like we were taught. This spreads less germs!

An Organized Shopping List

Save a lot of time and money by organizing your grocery list the the location of the item.

Before I go to the grocery store (Meijer), about 1 time a week, I write out my grocery list. Having been to Meijer many times, I pretty much know where to find each item in the store. So, when I write out or type my list, I list the items that I need based on my entry to the store and their location.

Since I've done this over the last several months, I have saved SO much time and money. I've probably cut my time to shop in 1/2, since I don't normally find myself back at the front of the store and then realize I have to wheel all the way to the back of the store to get an item I forgot.

It's also saved an unknown amount of money, as I do not need to go down an aisle with items that I do not have written down. As another side-tip, if an a aisle that I do need to go down is full of other carts and people, I will usually park my cart at the end/or side of an isle (out of cart traffic), then walk down, grab the item I need (without looking at other non-essential items), walk back to my cart...and on my way I go!

And, now off I go to the store. :)

Gift Ideas for Those With Difficulty Using Hands

We all know someone who is elderly or has arthritis, carpel tunnel or other disabilities that makes it difficult to work with her hands. Those of us who have full use of our hands sometimes don't stop to think of all the things. We can easily do that she either struggles to do or cannot do at all.

Surprise her with a zip bag full of green beans that have been washed and snapped, or a bag filled with cantaloupe slices, or a bag of strawberries that have been washed, stems removed and sliced, ready for adding sweetening and mashing for strawberry shortcake. You won't have to think about it long to come up with ideas of your own.

You will be surprised at how much she will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Your work will be well rewarded when you see her grateful reaction.

Caution, this is so rewarding that you might find yourself giving these zip bags to those who have full use of their hands.

Cat Snack Recipe

1 cup tuna in oil, dash of parsley, some wheat germ, and corn flake crumbs. I just "eyeball" the amount so the tuna sticks together in small meatballs.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 15-20 minutes, then at 200 degrees for 5 minutes. The cat bats around the meatballs awhile before nibbling on it, but does not make a mess.

Use Office Junk Paper for Home Coloring Paper

In my office, we get a lot of junk faxes and other used paper, old statements, cover sheets etc that are no longer needed. Instead of throwing these papers away I take them home for my kids to draw on. Of course there is no personal info on the paper.

I don't have to buy painting or coloring paper and it is a great way to recycle left over paper that otherwise would've gone in the trash. My son is a perfectionist and refuses to erase if he makes a mistake he starts all over again so this has saved so many trees :)

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Dave went on a business trip for a few days. When he returned, his wife reported that the dog really missed him. "She spent every night at the front door, waiting for you to come home," she said.

"What an example of true love," Dave replied.

"I wonder if you'd be that concerned about me?"

"Honey," she answered, "if you were gone overnight, and I didn't know where you were,

you can be sure I'd be waiting for you at the front door."

16 HP Briggs and Stratton Engine Won't Start

I have a Craftsman rider with a 16 HP Briggs and Stratton that barely cranks. The solenoid was replaced late last summer and I jumped the terminals today to see if that was the issue and it still barely cranks.

The battery was a 12 month battery purchased last year so I took it in and replaced it with a fresh one and I still get the same, barely cranks if at all.

It will rotate one or two revolutions and then stop. The mower is about 8 years old. I can generally get it jump started with my car and then the engine runs fine and I can mow like normal. Just as long as I don't shut it off. Then same thing, will hardly crank if at all.

Any suggestions on where to start? When it was barely cranking I took the spark plug out and then it cranked fairly well for about 5 seconds and then started slowing way down right away.

Dog Peeing Problem

I have an 8 month old MALE German Shorthair puppy. He is a big dog in size yet still has the heart of a puppy. I have never had this problem with a dog before. I crate trained him from day one and he has had a few "deliberate" accidents in the home. I am blessed to have flexible work hours and am able to do much of it at home so I spend a lot of time with him.

During the day he can go in and out of the house as needed. He has responded to hand signals and verbal requests since about 12 weeks of age and learns new things very quickly. The one thing he does is to pee either while standing still or walking. He does not raise his leg or squat while doing this. He just goes. It is almost as if he does not realize that he is doing this. He is a very loving animal and checks in often to give hugs and kisses.

Last night while getting his hug he urinated on me and his blanket. It was a while before I even noticed. He hikes when taken outside or on walks so I am confused as to whether he is marking or if he just does it when he is excited. My husband of course is not very happy with this and I do not want the dog to be banned from the house so any advice or suggestions I will be very grateful to receive. Thank you so much.

Removing Nail Polish From Clothing

Both my daughters managed to get nail polish on their clothes. The dress is thin cotton, and the skirt is tracksuit material. What can I use to remove the nail polish?

What Breed is My Dog?

I rescued Logan from a rescue shelter. He was a stray so not a lot is known about his past. Guesses on age and breed are 1-2 yrs and shepherd/husky mix which seems right as he is 70 lbs with the markings of each with the curled up tail. Any other guesses for breed? Someone said maybe wolf. I don't know if this could be possible because he is trained to sit and stay for the most part.
