Getting Rid of Ticks - Our Yard Is Infested With Ticks |

Our yard is infested with ticks, so bad that we can't let our kids out there to play or let the family dog out. Is there a home remedy to control the infestation of the ticks?

I just came across this and feel everyone's pain. We have been dealing with ticks since Memorial Day 2008. We have two dogs, a flat coated retriever (8 years old) and a golden retriever (10 months). They have been on Advantix since May and our flat coated retriever has never been able to get rid of the ticks. I shaved her this past weekend just so I could see them(so much hair). We are bombing our house for the third time today and constantly treat the yard. We are so frustrated as we are still finding different size ticks in the house. We have even tried Diatomaceous Earth with Pyrethrine in the house. The thing that bothers me the most is when my two youngest children end up with ticks on them. I don't understand why there are still ticks with everything we are doing. Someone told me of a friend that had an infested tree that had to be removed. At the end of my rope!

RE: Getting Rid of Ticks - Our Yard Is Infested With Ticks
I just spent three hours picking ticks, smaller than fleas, off my Lab. For the past 10 months, All my friends (with dogs) have been thru hell trying to eliminate the pests yet I never had a problem - until now. Based upon what I've learned here, I think there are two pieces to my infestation. #1) Until 3 months ago, my dogs had always been on Frontline Plus. I switched to Advantage because my vet was out of Frontline & I didn't want to wait. #2) A month ago, I spread bailed pine straw (harvested in N FL & GA) in my flower beds as mulch. We have a Florida Friendly yard so the entire thing is flower beds. Coincidently, my friends with the tick problems also spread the pine straw in their flower beds. Now I'm on my way to Lowes for fire ant granules, recommended by the vet, to broadcast in my yard. It makes me sad to have to treat my yard because I have so many beneficial bugs -- ladybugs, butterflies, & dragonflies. But my poor dogs are much more important. Thank you all for your guidance!

Don't be silly. It's not a big fuss, take a match light it and then blow it out and place it carefully and quickly on the tick. It forces the tick backwards and nothing gets left behind. Also there is no harm to the animal or person as I have done it myself.

Reading all of these really hurts me, but at least now I know I'm not the only one. I have two German shepherds. Male and female, which is pregnant right now and do at any time! I just recently notice these ticks on them. We've tried to control it but it just seems to be getting worse. I have read most of these posting and they have helped out.
I am going to try some of these home remedies only because everything else has failed! I'm just so terrified that something will happen to those unborn puppies. I'm going to actually go to the store first thing tomorrow morning and get to it! She's ready to pop! Please if there's anything else that anyone knows of that will help with these pests, pleasse email me kherna6149 AT yahoo.com and pray for my puppies.

Great thread. My subdivision In Orlando, FL doesn't allow guinea hens. I grew up on a farm in upstate, NY and we had guineas. And, we never had a tick problem.
I have tried everything but the all at once bombing of the yard, house, dog. We have a toddler, so I am wary of using all these chemicals.
While we definitely have an infestation, regular attention to the dog, and regular cleaning of the house does seem to keep the ticks under control. Instead of 30 of them on my walls, I find anywhere from 1-5 each day.
On interesting thing about ticks is they play dead. If you see something that looks like a spec of dirt on the floor, inspect it closely. It could be a tick with it's legs folded up.
I once did the full yard thing, which seemed to get rid of the ticks. However, 5 weeks later the tick eggs in the house hatched.
So, I am going to try the full bomb and wash EVERYTHING treatment this weekend. I'm also going to start putting vinegar in the dogs water. I'll try cedar in the yard. I'm also thinking of building an elevated bed for my dog, and putting double-sided tape or glue on the legs of the bed.
What is frustrating is that I never see the ticks outside.
One tip that I can offer: check between your dogs toes. The first time you look, there will be lots of ticks there.
However, we have trees and grapevines, etc so they could be everywhere.

We are in Pompano Bch. FL. My mother has ticks at her house too, she cannot get rid of them. She has 2 dogs and now she is always bathing them and trying to keep them indoors. She finds them crawling up her walls and they are all sizes. This is scary. We all need a solution. I told her about trying vinegar but she won't. I use vinegar in my house for everything.I clean with it and it keeps ants and bugs away. I've never seen a tick in my house. Also I put a lil drop of apple cider vinegar sometimes in my dogs water, keeps ticks off. Bugs hate it.

We live in North West Florida and it is nice to know other people are having such a time with ticks this year(misery loves company I guess).
We live on 40 acres and have been spraying pyrethrin and it does kill the ones you spray but we have them dropping from the trees and have two dogs so they just keep coming back. We soak the dogs in it too. I picked around thirty ticks off myself tonight but I was out in the wooded part of our property. They are terrible this year. I just read that ticks hate the smell of vinegar so tomorrow I am going to soak in it before I go out - I guess I won't smell real nice but at this point I don't care.

We too, have a huge tick problem. If you step out in your gravel drive way even, then walk back into our house, look down at your feet and you'll see at least 4 to 12 ticks, most of them are seed ticks, crawling on your shoes and legs!
I have no idea what to do about it. it is TERRIBLE! I just contacted a company to ask about getting this Permethrin in a concentrate so I can make a very strong solution into a large pump spray bottle and go drench our whole property, which is only 1 and 1/2 acres in Oklahoma.
I hope that it works as good as a few on here have said it does for them. I'll try to post back on here if it does work. Richard
PS will guinea's also eat Seed Ticks?

I'm currently having a really huge tick problem. They are everywhere in the front porch and they are also starting to get into the house and on the window curtains. I have two dogs who are infested with them. I've tried many different types of flee and ticks shampoos on them and it doesn't help one bit. I have no clue where the ticks are coming from. There are no grass or trees in the front porch area. I live in a very small area that does not have many big stores, so it's hard to find the products mentioned by a few of you. Does anyone know any home remedies that I can try?

"Especially if I were to get the guinea hens as well?"
A group of guinea will do an excellent job of keeping your property free of not only ticks but, spiders, grasshoppers, scorpions ect, etc.. Years ago most everyone in rural Southeast kept guineas. There are still a few local cattle ranchers "riding herd" over a large group of guinea fowl for the simple fact that they are the most effective means of clearing out tick populations and they dont wash away after a rain....normally. They make an excellent alarm system too, loudly sounding off at any intruder. Be forewarned of the later unless you have some distance between you and a neighbor. If you prefer not to deal with, or do have a good broody hen handy check local listing in the paper for live stock. Incubation isn't very difficult but humidity levels and timing can be fairly crucial in a high percentage hatch rate. Most any type of domesticated fowl such as chickens are decent tick eradicators but the guineas are the hands down pros.
Google guinea eggs or for a quick look-see check out the link below. Happy hunting, Bon Appetite! MGD

I am so thrilled to have found this page! Never ever have seen ticks around here and have been here in my house for over 6 years. Eastern Shore of Maryland but in rural area.
All of a sudden over just the past 4 weeks, EVERY time I go out to the front and back yards to water perennials, I have ticks on me, a human. The dogs are covered by Frontline Plus and never evidence of ticks.
However, one of them 2 years ago out of the blue was diagnosed with Erlichia from a brown tick during her annual SNAP test for heartworm, and just this spring the other one diagnosed with Lyme from a deer tick. Both recovered at a huge expense. And both times, there was no evidence of ticks on them (tick has to stay on them for at least 36 hours I think in order to contract the diseases). In fact, the brown tick is not indigenous to this area which causes Erlichia although lately it has traveled East.
Now, their human companion has been bit twice last week, and just this morning had 2 crawl out of my long black hair around my neckline in back and in front. I am freaking out...
And they are definitely deer ticks which carries Lyme (little white spot on back). So as I write here at 10AM eastern time, I am scratching, shaking out my hair, changing clothes, and just really flipped out.
All I do is go outside, water the perennials from 2 feet away, walk into the house at front, go onto the deck at back into the open, fenced in yard. And I have 2 midsized, not the pencil point teenies, ticks crawling out of my hair!
Dogs have none. Now they are on me. I am definitely going to try the Sevin and spray, granule the back yard that never gets higher than 3" in grass. As far as the front of the house that has no trees, no nothing but gardens, will just try and spray the perimeters.
Can someone help me here? My neighbor just this past winter started stacking huge piles of firewood beneath my leland cypress trees which are 20' away from the perimeter of my house...could this woodpile be part of the cause of excessive ticks on my property? She has them piled in the underbrush of the lelands which would let ticks travel up through the trees. She is willing to move the woodpile as it is on my property and it never bothered me the wood was on my property. But now I have this huge tick problem.
Sorry this is so long, but just having removed a tick crawler from my forehead, have been on this internet all morning trying to get some advice. my skin and head are raw from loofahing and brushing my hair. thanks all.

I've read a lot of posts (some old from 2007) of people talking about squashing bugs/ ticks on their dogs that are full (of blood)
For anyone who is unsure - DO NOT KILL TICKS while they are on your dog! They MUST be removed very QUICKLY & CAREFULLY - as to not squash the body OR separate the body from the head. It is (personally), quite a disgusting & not so easy task - but the best way is to use fine pointed head tweezers - GRASPING THE mouth parts (close to your dog's skin) and NOT THE BODY. hold steady & lightly apply pulling pressure until it comes out completely. *** leaving any portion of the tick in your dog (i.e. the head) will only become infected & possibly cause much harm to your dog in the long run.
If this is the case - TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET! If you are successful, make sure to thoroughly clean the wound & disinfect it immediately (I use either peroxide and/or witch hazel & the apply an anti-biotic ointment which is safe for the dog. WARNING -- ZINC/ ZINC OXIDE is TOXIC for dogs!
Ultimately, the best way to manage ticks is to avoid them all together - FRONTLINE PLUS is the best over all, but make sure to apply it every month!
Our yard in plopped down in the middle of hundreds of acres of farmland, woods, grasslands, etc. in CT - so our yard is chock full of ticks.
Make sure to keep the grass short - fleas & ticks need the protection of long grass from the sun (that dries up the humid & shaded conditions they need to live) for starters. I would then suggest a professional - like Tick Ranger/ Naturalawn or something similar which comes out every 6-8 weeks & sprays the lawn/ dirt (Tick Ranger's formula is safe for animals & kids). Then there are natural products like Greenlight Yardsafe - which I am also trying out for areas beyond the sprayed area or there are some Adam's products that can be sprayed on w/ your hose (check out Jefferspet.com, etc.).
I also know that ticks/ fleas hate cedar & supposedly will not cross a border of it (I believe at least 10" wide) - plus it will look pretty as a border in your yard. For the future, you can also plant natural plants that are defenders - I know that the Univ of Iowa (I believe) did a study on catnip, which is supposedly 10x more effective than DEET - since it produces an oil 'Neem" which is used in several natural insecticides. Maybe add to that cedar border, some catnip, lemongrass, lavender and lemon basil - all supposed to keep them (and mosquitos) at bay & I believe are all safe for your dogs, should they get curious.
BUT the 1st line of defense is definitely FRONTLINE PLUS - which actually is more effective *and waterproof* compared to many others.
Good luck to us all!

RE: Getting Rid of Ticks - Our Yard Is Infested With Ticks
I live in West Central Florida in the Tampa Bay Area. I've lived in my house for 15 years and never had ticks. Never even saw a tick. I use Frontline Plus or Advantge on the dogs depending on how bad fleas are. I switch to Advantage if I see any fleas at all. I don't worry that Advantage doesn't kill ticks because we simply don't have ticks. I hear the fleas are real bad this year so I have had them on Advantage for several months. BIG MISTAKE. I don't know if it's the hurricanes blowing them in, if a neighbor has a wood pile or if a neighbor brought ticks to our area with their dog, or if brought them home from outdoor dog shows - but I'm now having a tick problem.
My dogs are show dogs - which is neither here nor there but they are constantly groomed so I was very shocked when I found a small tick crawling on my arm. This was 4 days ago. I immediately put one of the shelties on a grooming table and found a small one. I ran right to the store and bought Frontline Plus - and gave all 3 dogs (2 shelties and one smooth collie) a healthy dose.
I have treated my yard, sprayed and bombed my house. I tore my house apart, sprayed under furniture, baseboards, turned bedding inside out, washed everything, tore cushions off the furniture and sprayed there. When I was done, I bombed the house. Tore my vehicle apart and sprayed in there. (My dogs are always in my vehicles in crates going to classes and shows). I Went through every hair on all 3 dogs and pulled off anything I found. I have not seen many adults. I used Home Defense from Ortho. By reading all these posts, I have a feeling that's not going to do it.
I am still finding small live ticks but they don't really look very happy.
I intend to treat house/yard again in 2 weeks, then every month through November. I intend to keep Frontline on my dogs for the rest of their lives.
I have not been bitten myself, so I'm assuming these are Brown Dog Ticks. I have a strong feeling that it's going to take more than once but I am HOPING that with due dilegence and maybe some professional products from the Do it Yourself pest control store, I can take care of this problem.
I do realize that now, every season, I will have to do this. Don't give up you guys - realize that is now something you have to do regularly to protect yourself, your family and your dogs. Prepare for battle. :o}

RE: Getting Rid of Ticks - Our Yard Is Infested With Ticks
OK, I think I found, if not the cure, a huge help!!!
First off, see my post earlier in that I tried over-the-counter stuff from Home Depot, did nothing. Then, Terminex, nothing. Then, Sevin Dust, nothing, Then Sevin granules -- went down to five ticks per day, plus the occasional one or two on the laminate floors in my bedroom.
In researching the web, I found an article that described "permethrin". Although it was expensive (about $45), I was absolutely desperate. Note, I had been treating my dog (and once I even accidently dropped Sevin Dust on her) but nothing seemed to help.
Permethrin is the main ingredient in dog shampoos and dips which is what kills the ticks/fleas. When I got it, it came with no instructions. But I decided even if I killed the grass (it was getting browner and browner from all the junk I kept spraying on it, I think), I was going to make it a strong solution (no instructions came with the bottle). I used one of those spray things that you buy at Home Depot to spray insecticides and put about 8 oz., then filled the rest up with water. I sprayed every spec of my yard. Guess what???? It worked!!!!!!!!!!
Now, I have no ticks in my bed although I have found one dead on the laminate floor and one alive. But I am very happy!
One funny thing. My brother in law and brother were walking under the one tree in my yard with a white door held flat between them. Imagine their surprise when 3 fell (they neither jump nor fly) from the tree onto the door! That means that more than likely they were in the tree all along and were crawling down or falling onto the ground. Another reason it was hard to get rid of them.
Sorry for the long post, but search online for Permethrin, use it and post here what you find out. Make sure to use ADAMS FLEA AND TICK SHAMPOO the same day and of course, AFTER using the shampoo, treat your dog with Frontline or whatever brand you are using. And lastly, that SAME DAY, vaccum your rugs/carpet and clean out the dogs bed. You may need to give it a couple of days but you should see a marked decrease in ticks.
Let us know the outcome..........I am no longer in TICK HELL!!!

FLEA AND TICK BUSTER SHAMPOO 2 oz Sunshine Concentrate 2 oz Water 4 drops Tea Tree Oil Mix and keep in a "shampoo bottle". This "shampoo" is great for removing fleas, freshening the smell of the dog and it does not irritate sensitive skin.

RE: Getting Rid of Ticks - Our Yard Is Infested With Ticks
I just bought a home about two months ago in a residential area of Lakeland, Florida. My Min-Pin lives indoors and sleeps in my bed. The previous owner had three Min-Pins and a Lab. Each morning, I pick out about 7 live teeny engorged (larvae?) ticks off my bed, and occasianally one or two off her body. I am at wits end!
I am using Advantix K9 on my dog. I bought some spray for the yard from Home Depot that starts with a "T", nothing. Had Terminex come out and spray, nothing. Day before yesterday, spread Sevin Dust. This morning I picked up about 5 in my bed and couldn't go back to sleep because just the thought makes me wake up various times in the night to check the bed.
I really am freaked out and I cannot take any more. The new vet I used was in lala land. Absolutely no help and it was actually the vet tech who told me about Sevin Dust. She also mentioned switching to Frontline which I just went online and ordered.
I am going to try the Lemon Ammonia & Dawn (if someone posts how to mix it), I'm going to buy more Sevin Dust and apply it to my dog. I'm going to buy the Ammonium Nitrate someone mentioned here at the local farm supply & feed store and I'm going to Walmart to see if they have Tick Granules that I read somewhere else.
If all of this does not work........and soon, I'm selling my home!!!! Anything else I am missing????

I got the K9 advantix for my Maltese's body and then bought a collar that was to help with ticks.....when they get on him they don't burrow into his skin and I take them off........I have someone spraying the outside and inside but now still find 4 ticks every night still on him. In all my years I have never had a problem with ticks. We live in western Florida. Now I am thinking today that I will cut all the leaves and branches he can come in contact with in our back yard. He only is allowed in our back yard. I also need to cut the grass because I see that can be a problem too.

I live in Arizona where there is little humidity and lots of sun. A few months back we bought a puppy who we found out had ticks from the breeder. The ticks ended up on the other 3 dogs we have and since they are indoor dogs, they got in the house. I had an exterminator come and he cleared out what he estimated to be about 15,000 eggs and he re-treated the house and yard two weeks later because I still had them. The dogs were all treated with Frontline Spot On and I bought another round to give them. I don't have any grass in the yard and the exterminator didn't find any more eggs. I suspect they crawled under my kitchen cabinets and laid eggs because I still find them in the kitchen. I have bought spray too and spray every couple of days, but cannot seem to get rid of them. Anyone have a solution? The ticks are only downstairs (the cat doesn't have them and the dogs don't go upstairs) and my daughter and I are confined to the top floor. It's a horrible way to live, but I can't stand them. HELP!

Hi everyone. I am a mother of a 19 month old and a newborn. We live in Arizona, and recently have had a very bad tick problem in and outside my home. I am terrified of ticks crawling on my babies. i have had 3 pest control guys come and I only liked one out of the three. He has come a total of 5 times and I still haven't got rid of them. I also got my two dogs dipped but that hasn't worked either. If anyone has some advice please post it. God bless you.

To remove ticks you should use a special tick tweezer (it puts the pressure on the head of the tick and avoids squeezing the body, to prevent blood moving from the tick back to your or your pet's body).
For a human to avoid getting ticks in the first place, wear long trousers, even on hot summer days, and put a little mosquito repellant on your wrists and ankles. Also, avoid activities that involve lying down in the grass.

Unfortunately, you cannot keep ticks from getting big...aside from getting rid of them all together. They get bigger as they suck more blood.

Best advice is to visit your local vet for topical treatments for your animals and they should also carry home treatments as well. Vet-Kem makes some great products that most Veterinarians carry, and many pet stores as well! DO NOT GO THE CHEAPEST ROUTE! If you want to go organic try getting some diatomaceous earth from your local Home Depot/Lowes.

We live in central Florida and have had a horrible time with ticks this year. We have tried a variety of sprays from the lawn and garden and the farm stores. I will definitely try a few of the ideas that ya'll just recommended, Sevin dust sounds like a good idea and is fairly safe around pets and kids. One of the vets that I have spoken to about this problem, blames all of the active hurricanes that we have had - I guess they blew the ticks in? I think the real problem is treating your yard when your neighbors don't treat theirs - the ticks just run over next door for a while and hang out until your yard is safe again for them.

I'm going nuts trying to kill the ticks in my yard too. My fiancee told me it was hopeless to even try because we live in the county next to a wooded area. But I'm sick of it. Our yard is large, but some of these sound like they work like a charm. My neighbor has some guinea hens and I was wondering if I bought a few--would they fight? I wouldn't want to start any troubles. Also if I did the Ammonium Nitrate would that hurt my pets? Especially if I were to get the guinea hens as well? Thank you, Kas

i don't want to use anything chemical, i'd rather use something organic and nontoxic to cats and dogs, if anyone knows of something i'd really appreciate hearing about it. i've found one on one dog, another in my kitchen, and two on my husband, that's enough for me. i'm worried about the chemicals and diseases, since i'm pregnant and don't want to do anything that could do any harm. also my cat and dogs kill mice, so whatever kills the ticks can't be toxic to pets, i don't want to lose any of them.

To Debra. I'm sorry about the loss of your beloved Shepard. I don't know if you've ever heard of a tick bourne disease called Ehrlichiosis or Erlichia, but some of the symtoms you described could fit.
I'm in S Florida, and since January, I'm having a HORRIBLE time fighting ticks in the house and yard. Exterminator has been doing a treatment both inside and out every 2 weeks now for 4 rounds of treatments so far. We all need to get out of here for several hour and mop the floor before allowing the 2 four legged "kids" back in. It's improving, but I'm still finding the cirtters everywhere. I also use Advantix, tick collars and bath them in a tick treatment shampoo. The situation is improving, but it's not over yet, and I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle.
I'll try some of these suggestions - unfortunately, guinea hens aren't the solution here! If any of you can recommend anything else, I'm all ears.

I, too live in Arkansas, in the country on 3 acres that get a lot of ticks from neighbors dogs running across our land. My husband sprays pyrethrin spray 50-100% stronger than recommended (as pyrethrin is a termite spray). He sprays in the spring when ticks are first noticed, and we don't have any problems the rest of the year--our lot is wooded.

I don't know if you are still looking for a solution or if anyone else is but if you are in a rural area adding a pair of guinea fowl will help. This type of bird like to eat ticks specifically and they are easy to keep.

Recently there has appeared ticks everywhere in my house, and on my dog. I'm out here in California, San Diego, where it seldom rains, however, we have a sprinkler system that keeps the grass and some plants watered. I"ve Never experienced more then the occasional tick with the dogs I've had over the years. My overwhelming concern about this manifestation of ticks is because... ONE of my beloved K-9 passed away on the 11th of August. what began as a strange virus, exchanged by my younger shepherd to my older one, was treated by our primary vet, and both recovered. Bear, the shepherd that passed, suddenly, began to have the same virus symptoms again, primarialy, vomiting excessively. Just two weeks ago I walked him into the vet's office for the shots and meds. It was never determined what my dogs had contracted, but, they were ok. Then, Bear began to continue vomiting all thru the night. I rushed him to a emergency vet. Blood work was done, x-rays. I was told he was in the stages of hip dysplasia, a propensity for shepherds. But, it was the vomiting, and how suddenly he now could not even stand up. The following day, I returned to the emergency vet and had a sonagram done. He was administered a shot of cortizone, and, several bottles of prescriptions. Even the shot of cortizone did not help in alleviating his symptoms. The next morning, persistent to feed into him the meds and get him to take some water and food, he managed to keep most of the contents digested. When I went to check on him outside, he was in critical condition, could not move, even was showing signs of convulsions. I picked up my 97 lb. Bear, rushed him to the ER. It was then and there that I had to make the hardest decision of my life, to let him leave my life with dignity, to put him to rest. Bear and I were trained and certified in explosive and weapon training. He as my "partner". I am writing this because just weeks ago I had a fully functioning dog. Now I have ticks in the house, many, and on my other shepherd. Infested. I have asked the vets if it were possiable that a tick infestation could have been internal in him, or, that these ticks could have been THE cause of my Bear's sudden demise. They don't know. Both my shepherd's were on Advantage, but, I did not realize it was only for the protection against fleas, not ticks. My other shepherd Faith is now ,on Advantix. So, in my grief of loosing my bewst friend, I'm asking if anyone out there has experienced a similiar tradgedy that may have very well involved ticks as the culprit, a tiny parasite that can take down a mighty dog. What an evil, nasty villian, the tick. Thanks for listening.

we live in Arizona and one year the ticks were so bad,we found them crawling up the wall.they had came from cows that travel thru the woods here,so we used Frontline on our dogs and sprayed with "Home Defense" from the hardware store.we have 2 acres and it took quite a bit of the stuff but it got rid of the ticks after the second spraying. we haven't had a single tick since then.we don't have ANY grass only bare land but the little boogers travel...

I also live in Arkansas. If you don't mind using chemicals, the granules will work, but there is a fertilizer that works well, too. It is Ammonium Nitrate and is available at the Farm Supply and feed stores. It is not expensive, and doesn't take a lot. The best way to apply it is with a seed broadcaster, which is a handheld device with a crank handle. Place the Ammonium Nitrate in the hopper and crank slowly as you walk across your yard. Do this just before a rain, or use the sprinkler afterward and soak it into the ground. This is also good for your yard, but you will need a good lawnmower because it will give you lots of green grass that needs to be cut often. If you spread it too heavily, it will turn the grass brown temporarily, but it will come back and make a beautiful lawn with no bugs. We do ours early in the spring when the spring weeds are popping up ahead of the grass. And one treatment lasts us all summer. Also, for you folks who use Frontline Plus on your dogs, the cheapest place I have found to buy it is from a website on the internet. It comes from Australia, I believe, but I have been ordering for my neighbor (she treats 9 dogs) and my self for our three Rat Terriers. A 6 month supply from them is only a few dollars more than a 3 month supply available locally. And they ship very promptly. I have been using them for over 2 years. Here is the link to check this out. http://www.petshed.com/frontline-plus.asp Harlean from Arkansas

I live in Arkansas in the country, and I use to have the tick investation problem big time; but now I use Frontline on my dogs. It goes on once a month, right on their neck. I have tried other brands from cheaper to more expensive, but have gone back to Frontline, cause to me it is by far the best product for fleas and ticks. We also use Tick Granules gotten really anywhere they sell garden stuff. We get ours at Wal-Mart. You have to put it on the ground right before it is suppose to rain, the rain activates it. Tick granules also takes care of fleas and other bugs too. I recommend if your yard is really that bad infested not to be stingy laying down the granules if you go this route. Normally for us, laying the granules once is good enough to cover us for protection all Summer from fleas and ticks; but sometimes like this year we will need to lay down the granules twice, once in the middle of Spring and once in the middle of Summer. The reason we will have to is because we really didn't have a cold enough Winter this year to get rid of the bugs, so we know we will be heavily infected with them this Summer. Anyway between Frontline and tick granules, we have no problem walking anywhere in our yard anymore. Oh the granules also take care of chiggers too.

I don't know what part of the country you live in but I am sure there is a Walmart. I use a product called SEVIN dust. I wear rubber gloves and srprinkle it all over my yard and around the the whole base of my home. They also sell it in liquid form which I use in a garden sprayer diluted with water. I spray it EVERYWHERE. This is the only product that I have found to help with ticks. I even sprinkle some on my dogs. It is actually sold as a repellent for gardens insects i believe. Try it , it really does work. It also kills other outdoor ugly digueting bugs too!

Oh i feel for you. Ticks scare me to death with the diseases they carry. My husband got Lyme disease from them , but was caught in early stage, and let me tell you i have done all i can to get rid of them. But like ValleyRimGirl, i too live in and around the woods and its a constant thing. But my best solution was to get chickens and guineas for the yard. I couldnt believe how much that helped. Yeh, they leave behind a few droppings but i can live with that more than i can with a tick. And keep tree limbs cut up high, and all underbrush raked and burnt. Especially Pine Trees and the pine straw. Ticks love this for some reason here. Let us know how it goes and what remedy works for you .

RE: Getting Rid of Ticks - Our Yard Is Infested With Ticks
What do you mean by "infested"? One or two each time they play or hundreds? Do you have long grass in the back yard? Ticks live in long grass. They also like dry conditions. Mow the grass often, water the lawn often.
As for your dog, there are solutions that can be put on the dog's back behind the neck (mine for my dogs is called Defend) and this solution needs to dry for a day (no kids or cats touching it!!) and then the dog will not get ticks or fleas for the next 3 - 4 months. It does not harm the dog at all. A lot of ticks on a dog and the dog goes "crazy" with them on him/her. "crazy" i mean...scratching and trying to rub the ticks off.
As for your kids...get them to strip once in the house. Check them all over and don't worry about it. We've grown up in the country and some years, going down to the pasture where there is long grass have yielded 200 or more woodticks at a time. Pick them off and keep going.
