Craft Project: Faux Birthday Cake

At Sunday School, we recognize the kids' birthdays, but it seemed sort of boring without a cake and candles, so I made a pretend one. Schoolteachers could also use it in their classrooms. Or use it as a table decoration for your child's party, especially if you are serving cupcakes or cookies instead of a big cake. This idea would work for a wedding cake as well.

Sasha (Yorkie)

Sasha is 4 and a Yorkie. We got her 3 years ago through a rescue group after her previous owner didn't want her anymore. We also have 2 other furbabies we got from the same rescue group.

Sasha's favorite things are to walk with her Dad and play with her Yorkie/Pom brother Wolfie. She is very bossy, and can be a brat, but gets away with it because she is so pretty! She is overprotective of her Mom, Dad and furry brother and sister.

Reuse Packing Trays For Paint Or Beads

Use the trays that come inside of individual serving size condiment boxes for paint trays or beading trays. Restaurants throw these away when empty and many would be more than happy to save a few for you! These work especially great for thick children's tempera paint. Using these makes clean up-easy and they are free!

Aluminum Foil To Prevent Static Cling

For static cling, I put a wad of tin foil in the dryer. It seems to help. Also, don't dry to bone dry. Leave damp and hang to finish. That system also prevents a lot of wrinkles so no need for fabric wrinkle releaser. It seems that a lot of store products create the need then meet it. Prevention is a key.

Cleaning Up Pet Vomit

Just a very simple tip I thought to share with you. If you pet vomits on the carpet, here's a quick and easy clean-up. Just cover with kitty litter, leave to dry then vacuum it up. There should be no odour at all. If there is -with equal amounts of Listerine mouthwash and water in a spray bottle, shake then spray over the affected area.

I hope this is helpful :)

Over The Door Shoe Racks For Hair Accessories

This is a dual purpose tip. If you are someone who has to wear or likes to wear wigs or even other types of hair accessories that can be hung, I have the perfect time and space saving solution. The over the door shoe racks are awesome. You can hang one of each wig on the hook a shoe hands on. I have mine organized from shortest to longest and also from lighter to darkest inside of the length arrangement. The longer curly ones are best to be left in a hair net to save on hanging onto another and to keep the curl perked up on. This can also work for hair bands, head bands, bracelets, pony's or scrunchies and anything else you may have that would work the same way. Less tangling and digging for the non hair items and better maintenance and quick picking for all!

Easy Access Directory

Keep the phone numbers and hours of stores, doctors, the library, etc. posted on the inside of one of your kitchen cabinet doors. This will save you a lot of time when you need to make a call or find out when a place of business opens or closes.

Cleaning Your Birdcage

This is the easiest and cheapest way to clean the poop off of your birdcage. Go to a dollar store and buy the bristle brush that you use to scrape your grates on your BBQ. Rub lightly and it will fall off easily. If the poop is stuck to the side of the bar and you can't reach it, then use the side of the bristle brush that is also made to clean the sides of the bars in the BBQ. Don't scrub the bars because it will take the paint off.

If it needs more cleaning than that: Go to a dollar store and buy a shower curtain. You have two options.

Option #1 Let the poop dry for two days and use your finger nail to pop it right off. It comes off in a whole piece. No mess.

Option #2 Go to a dollar store and buy wash cloths just for this purpose. Wet the wash cloth with hot water and it just washes off. This method can be used if it is dried or not.

Use the hose of the vacuum to pick up all the seeds and food. Do this with option #1 and #2.

Add Baking Soda to Your Sink When Washing Dishes

Add about a teaspoon of baking soda with your dish detergent when filling the sink to wash dishes. It softens the water, helps the detergent clean better and makes the suds last a lot longer. I do this all the time and found it makes cleaning the dishes easier and helps reduce and remove hard water stains.

Sewing Machine Needles as Picture Hangers

If you want to hang a picture without damaging your wall or sheet-rock, simply find a stud and pound an old sewing machine needle into the stud. These sewing machine needles are quite strong and will hold up quite a load if they are pounded in with a hammer. You can buy a pack of 4 new Sewing Machine Needles at Walmart for under $2. Now you know what to do with your old and dull machine needles. Don't throw them away!

Growing Tomatoes, Flowers And Veggies In Potting Soil Bags

If you live in an apartment with only a small balcony, have super-rocky soil, or are just down-right lazy like me, you can grow tomatoes, flowers and other plants in the same bag the potting soil comes in! All you do is poke drainage holes on one side of the bag, then lay the bag flat with the drainage holes towards the ground. Next, cut a criss-cross shaped hole on the side that faces up with a sharp knife or razor blade. Now simply plant your flower or veggie starts into the cross shaped hole or holes, cover with soil and close the criss-cross hole and mulch over the top of the bag to keep the roots cool. Another bonus to gardening this way is you don't have to water very often as the plastic bag helps keep the water in.

Use Egg Whites Instead of Egg Substitute

In most recipes calling for egg substitute, you can use 2 egg whites in place of 1 egg substitute. Just break the eggs open and toss the yolks away. I know that sounds wasteful, but consider the price of egg substitute. The package of egg substitute usually has the equivalent of four eggs in it. When you compare that price with the price of a dozen of eggs, from which you'd get the equivalent of 6 egg substitutes, it makes sense.

"Cotton Ball" Seeds Or Starts

I would like a start or seeds to plant a flower that I don't know the name of but I will describe it the best I can. It is about the size of a grapefruit, and it comes in pink, blue, white, and I don't know what other color. I think it's name is cotton ball, or popcorn ball or something like that. I really want some of these flowers. Could someone out there figure out what I am trying to say and maybe tell me where to get a start or some seeds? Thanks so much.

Infestation Of Tiny Ants

I am losing a battle with small ants in my kitchen on my counter tops, sometimes in my bathroom since this started. I have used a can of Raid without success of eliminating them. My house is clean-I swear!

My liquid lemon pledge kills them on the spot but I think we chased them to the cupboard. I bought Terro liquid yesterday and put it on cardboard and strategically placed the pieces. While they are gone off the counter tops, they are in my cupboards now-I threw food away! Do I need the bait traps instead? I cannot find a nest inside or out.

Oh My Goodness I thought I would die this morning. Are they sweet ants? They are tiny as can be and we have never seen anything like it before. We feel like the Terro made it worse. Please help!

Using Flannel As A Winter Drape Lining

Has anyone ever made flannel drape liners? I want to make mine out of white flannel. It sells for 1.99 a yard here. How well does it insulate from the cold? I put plastic on the windows every year, but they are still cold. I thought if I made a flannel liner with the insulated drapes this would help with the cold one feels from the windows.

Using Paint To Making A Room Appear Larger

I'm getting ready to paint some rooms inside my home. I'd like to use light and color to trick the eye into thinking the rooms are actually larger.

I've done some reading on this subject and can't come to terms with it. I just don't understand. From what I've read, if you want a wall to advance toward you, you paint it darker than the other walls in the room. For example, if you want to make a rectangular room appear square, you paint the shorter walls a shade darker than the longer walls.

Why does it work that way? When a woman applies her makeup, if she wants something to go "in" she makes it darker. For example, on the eyelids the darker shade goes in the crease and the highlighter goes on or under the brow line to make it come toward you. I think we're creating lights and shadows to reconstruct the shapes that make up the face.

Why are the two methods reversed when it comes to painting the rooms in a house?
