Urine Stains on a Mattress |
|
|
How to remove urine from a mattress... I have a 2 year old sharing my bed, a pillow top mattress and I tried to steam clean it, and all I did was spread the stain everywhere. It doesn't smell. I tried Hydrogen Peroxide, baking soda and a pinch of detergent method and it all clumped up on the bottom of the spray bottle and wouldn't spray! Any help is welcomed!
Thanks! Deanna from DA

RE: Urine Stains on a Mattress
Carpet fresh on the stain. Rub some into the fabric, then add extra put a lightly blowing fan toward it for 3-4 hours, vacuum and then stand the mattress up. Now let the fan blow the carpet fresh through to kill the smell. Once the odor is gone you can cover the mattress with a mattress cover. That is good for the light weight mattresses.
For the thick mattresses, you may need to pour vinegar though the stain,(hopefully you have a back yard or porch or you might try the bath tub. You want to get rid of the odor, then you can let it dry out side or get as much water out as possible then stand it up and let fans blow on it for several hours until completely dry. Then you can cover it with a mattress cover Good luck

We have dogs and accidents happen. I use a product named Simple Solutions. It can be purchased at PetSmart. I use it in my steam cleaner to clean upholstery, mattresses, washing dog beds, carpet, etc. It works great at removing odors and stains of all kinds. I had a professional carpet cleaner tell me if he couldn't get the stain out, nothing could. He was WRONG! He couldn't get the stain out but I cleaned it with Simple Solutions and it came right out. You can purchase Simple Solutions by the spray bottle or the the gallon.

My toddler peed on a sofa, hitting the leaning part of it as well. I first removed the cushion out of its cover; I have one of those super soft faux suede sofas; I found out it's no problem washing it in a laundry machine. I sprayed the stain on the cushion cover with Shout and washed with a regular detergent on a gentle cycle then air dryed. The stain on the leaning part of the sofa I first blotted out with paper towel as much as possible, than I sprayed it with 3 to 1 solution of watter and vinegar. I let it soak, blotted out, sprayed again, then sprinkled with baking soda and vaccumed the next day. Sofa is stain and odor free! I love baking soda, find out more about it, it's briliant for so many things, eliminates odors and lightens the area without the worry of bleached spot by peroxide, which I was scared to use on my darker toned sofa. Thanks for all the posts, it helped a lot!

Cats and dogs, especially those not neutered, have a tendency to "mark their territory" and it is essential to the homeowner to remove all traces of the urine to keep the pet from returning to the same spot and leaving urine stains again.
Many products on the market today will clean the initial stain. The biggest issue with cat urine is that the odor inevitably will return unless the stain is treated properly to begin with. Animal urine is composed of three elements. These are urea, which the sticky tacky part, urochrome, which is the pigment or color element. and the uric acid crystals and salts. The first two elements can be easily removed. It is the uric acid crystals that cause the returning odor on hot sticky days, or when it rains. Uric acid contains non-soluble salt crystals, which tightly bond to the surface. Removing these uric acid crystals effectively removes the odor from your home.
One of the most highly recommended products for the removal of urine stains is Urine Off. This product is enzyme based, which attacks and destroys the uric acid crystals. Other veterinarian recommended products are Atmosklear Odorless Odor Eliminator, a spray product that Neutralizes the uric acid crystals. Also veterinarian recommended is Feliway. Feliway comes with two products - a diffuser that is plugged into an outlet that controls odor over a 500-650 square foot area, and a spray that is used on areas of the home that the cat is marking.
A solution using common household items is made by mixing one part water to three parts white vinegar. Place something heavy, such as a laminated book, over the stain. This stops the solution from simply evaporating into the air, and allows it to work. Do not blot. Allow the solution to dry. Step two involves mixing a solution of three parts water to one part vinegar, and repeating the process. When completely dried, use 1 teaspoon liquid detergent to one cup of water, and thoroughly cleanse the area, blotting it dry. The vinegar smell will dissipate in a few days.
Caring for and cleaning up after your pet does not need to be a daunting task. Always remember, though, that a cat or dog has a sense of smell that is 10 times greater than humans. The pet will return to the same spot if the odor is not eliminated. Doing the job right in the first place will eliminate a lot of headaches, and make your co-existence with your pets more enjoyable.

I have a cat that has not adjusted well to our new house. He has urinated on our mattress which I cleaned immediately with pet cleaner and a steam cleaner. I thought it worked but now I smell urine again. He also urinated on the futon in the spare bedroom which I just noticed, so I have no idea how long ago he did that. Any suggestions on how to clean it? Cat urine is the worse smell!

My daughter had an accident on my very expensive pillow top mattress. I found this site and figured I would try the hydrogen peroxide method. It worked great! You just need to make sure you use it right away before it starts foaming.
Thanks!

I used white vinegar starting from the outside to the inside while stain was still wet. I used a regular towel to blot and then sprinkled with baking soda and vacumed the pillow top the next day. It worked great and no smells.

Miracle!!! My daughter made a huge urine stain on our pillowtop mattress. Unfortunately it set in and the stain looked horrible! I put "Resolve Dual Action" carpet cleaner on it and rubbed it in well. Not only did it take the stain out, but it made is smell great!

I don't know how to remove the stains but I can help you prevent more. Buy one of the allergy covers for the matress. They make ones that are vinyl. You can't tell that you're sleeping on it as it's soft but it keeps the matress clean.

I would suggest buying one of those small steam cleaners and getting the urine stain cleaner that goes in them. Hopefully that will get rid of it.

Denver mattress stores sell a kit for mattress and trust me those are worth every penny. My husband sweats and smells metallic and drenches sheets thru mattress pad at night so I use the urine remover spray and it works! I wash sheets with white distilled vinegar for fresh bedding in HOT water.

Steam cleaning ( hot) will set in most stains. You want to use a cold water solution.

RE: Urine Stains on a Mattress
I use Folex to treat old stains, you spray it on and rub it in. It works great for those body oil stains and any other fluid. My son's diaper leaked on mine, so I blotted then let baking soda absorb the rest. After I vacuumed it up (left it for at least 6 hours) I used the folex and direct sunlight. Sunlight is used as a natural whitener and disinfectant. Folex is at Walmart, EDIT: in the carpet cleaner section (bottom shelf) about $7, but is SO worth it! It doesn't have fumes, actually it is enzyme based and works great!
Then I would get a waterproof mattress cover if this is a common thing, and use Luvs or good store brand at night!

KidsNclutter has the best solution (Read it further down the page). Just spray her ingredients on the mattress and the stain and smell are gone.

RE: Urine Stains on a Mattress
We had just purchased a Pillow Top mattress from a local store, and were planning on returning it because it was too soft. Enter the family dog, who felt that she should pee right on top of the mattress. I found this page and tried the Hydrogen Peroxide, baking soda and pinch of detergent method and hair dryer, and I must say it worked wonders. No stain at all, and it doesn't smell that I can tell. I have had good success using just plain rubbing alcohol and pouring it on the stain/odor. Take a damp cloth and feather the edges of the stain. Dry thoroughly outdoors or use a fan. The odor and stain should be gone. (06/23/2006)

| I would suggest an enzyme cleaner. You can get them at Wal-Mart (or similar stores) in the pet section (usually with pet shampoos). They not only work great on urine, but they're amazing at getting out other stains and smells. |

| Mix this & spray on. Must use within 20 minutes & do not attempt to store the remainder in a closed bottle. It works by producing by-products that are only active for that time period anyway. Stored it leaks or foams out of the bottle!
Mix: about 8 oz. Hydrogen Peroxide (brown bottle in 1st aid aisle) & 3 tablespoons baking soda (small box in baking aisle), & a drop of liquid hand dishwashing liquid. Mix well & spray onto stain, within 5 minutes stain should be gone. If the baking soda leaves a white powder, you can vacuum it off, or wipe w/ damp rag, but this usually is not a problem unless you add too much baking soda. |

Archived Request: Removing a Urine Stain From a Mattress
| We have a bed wetter at my house and not only did she go in the bed mattress and futon mattress, but also on the carpet. We cleaned it up with towels, dabbed with water, then with laundry soap, and pet and stain remover, then arm and hammer deodorizer, then we vacuumed.
We also have a fan pointing towards the mattress and floor, to dry it out. I think this all worked for the carpet - but there is still a stain on the mattress and I feel like it still smells and is dirty!
I really need some help to get this out!

| When I had my own daycare, I went to a janitor supply store and asked what hospitals/nursing homes used for urine in furniture. They directed me to a gallon jar of this environmentally friendly liquid that had some form of harmless live bacteria that eats away the urine. I remember pouring it on, and having to keep it wet with a plastic bag. It's been so long ago... I don't remember the name. My grandfather's catheter leaked in my mom's new car, and she was successful with my liquid, also. Ask at your local janitor supply store. |

| If possible take the mattress outside and leave in the sun all day. The sun will draw the smell out as well as truly drying the mattress deep down. |

| I use vinegar. With kids and pets I have used it on carpet, the sofas, and on the mattresses. I just take a jug of vinegar and pour it full strength on the spot. I try to pour as much as needed to cover the spot when it soaks in. It takes some time to dry but the spot is (was) wet already. Both the vinegar and urine smell disappear. Vinegar is also suppose to disinfect. |

| To remove urine stains from a mattress, try the hydrogen peroxide method. You can also try using white vinegar. If you attempt to clean the spot with white vinegar, treat the stain with the same method as the peroxide, blot the stain with a towel from the outside of the stain to the inside of the stain until it is removed. Then when basically dry (I blot and blow dry) you can spray with foot spray like Odor Eater (It is great). It has baking powder that helps eliminate any stain that remains.
