Scenery: Florida Preservation Park

This was taken at a local preserve park near our home in an area not normally open to the public. I have never seen a truly "green" pond like this before. It also had goldfish swimming around in it. I call this photo "Hidden Emerald."

Use Wading Pools to Keep Food Cold

I want to share how our family utilized a small place to set out food at our family reunion! We have a large family so we needed all the room we could get! The kitchen area only had a 3 foot wide cement counter so that's where all the food had to be placed. We used 2 children's small swimming pools that we purchased at Walmart, I think it was $4.88 each.

We just arranged the bowls and poured ice around it, We were under a pavilion and the food stayed cold all afternoon! Clean up is easy. Remove the bowls and dump the ice.

Save the pools for future parties/reunions! Unless the kids claim them :)

Everyone said "Wow, who thought of this?" Sure helped put a lot of food in a small area.

Aggie (Shepherd Mix)

Aggie is a 12 year old Shepherd mix. We adopted her from the SPCA about a year ago. Since she was a senior dog, no one really wanted her so she was there four long months waiting for a home.

We had the opportunity to adopt another dog into our family and were searching the SPCA web site when my son Brady spotted her. He was very compassionate towards her and the fact that she was such an old dog. We went and looked at her and adopted her that day!

Her favorite thing is squeaky toys! She always has to have one in her mouth. When she wants to eat some dry dog food she gently places the toy in the bowl, eats her food and when she is done, picks up the toy and leaves.

Aggie is attached to Brady like glue! She will not leave his side. She sleeps with him at night and knows the exact time to get up so she can ride in the car with me to pick him up from school. If he goes out to ride his bike, she patiently waits by the front door until he returns. I think they have both made each other very happy!

Earnhardt (Yellow Lab)

Earnhardt is a 4 and a 1/2 year old Yellow Lab. Earnhardt's mother was a foster pup we took in, after moving into a house where she had been left by previous owners of the house.

Quite a sad story actually, but after weeks of working with Earnhardt's mom, she eventually became a very devoted pet. She blessed us with 7 beautiful lab puppies. We kept one from the litter...Earnhardt!

He's quite a ham really, typical lab. He likes to take socks off your feet. He's very gentle, and will not bite toes. He just thinks its funny. To us, he's truly an amazing dog. Very well behaved in public and here at home.

He's been subjected to many foster pups, and more recently to a blind Himalayan kitten we took in. He loves her big time. Her name is Bumper

Today's Tips:

Use Frozen Bottle to Help Keep Cool

This is a health tip for dangerous hot weather. If you do not have a working air conditioner or only a weak one, put water in empty liter pop bottles or empty Gatorade bottles to about 2/3 of the way, recap and put in freezer over night and freeze.

When weather is too hot, wrap a frozen bottle in a tee shirt or kitchen towel and put it next to your body as you sit, or next to a baby sitting or lying down, or next to an old person. It helps cool the core of the body, so heat stroke is prevented.

Check the feel for comfort level and cover bottle with cloth accordingly. It helps people sleep comfortably and more safely. When mostly thawed, refreeze and swap out with a frozen one.

It acts like a hot water bottle, only in reverse. This is for dangerously hot weather.

Source: Came up with idea one summer when our old air conditioner wasn't working well and we had a heat wave.

Baking Soda for Exfoliating Mask

The other day I was using baking soda for any of the million jobs that it does around the house, and I noticed this: if you mix three parts baking soda and one part water (I used 1 tsp. of it with just enough water to make it into a paste), you can use it as an exfoliating mask! Just use it after you've washed your face, and then rinse. It also suggests using it once a week for "fuller, more manageable hair" by mixing one teaspoon to your shampoo once a week. Who'da thunk it? Talk about frugal living!

Store Cords in Toilet Paper Rolls

Organizing electrical extension cords when not in use. Save empty TP rolls. Fold your cords in lengths of 8 inches and insert each one in an empty TP roll. Write on the outside of the roll with a permanent marker the length of the extension cord inside of the roll. These will stack neatly in a small plastic basket and you know what size of cord you are getting each time.

Cornstarch Window Cleaner

Best window cleaner ever! Take 1/2 cup of cornstarch and mix with a gallon of water. Mix very good, then you can either pour some in spray bottle or you can pour some in a container. Then start cleaning. Really good stuff. If you have really dirty windows you might need to do a couple of times. Good tip for going green also.

Reuse Air Conditioning Water in the Garden

We don't have a big garden. Just a tomato plant, some succulent plants and magnolia tree we try to give extra water too. We have a large window A/C unit in a spot where we can easily put a dish pan to collect the water that drips from it otherwise it would be all over the patio making a mess.

We started using that water on the above mentioned things and then began to thrive. We decided it was free of chlorine and maybe that was giving the plants a cleaner "drink" of water when we have some. It is so dry here and at times we don't have any.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

The company psychiatrist was interviewing Nancy. As she sat in the chair, the psychiatrist asked a series of questions to determine if she was emotionally suitable for the company. Things were not not going well for Nancy. The psychiatrist decided to try a new approach, to give Nancy one last chance.

He asked, "if you could have a conversation with someone, living or dead, who would it be?"

Nancy quickly responded, "the living one."

Kenmore Refrigerator Ice Maker Isn't Making Ice

I have a Kenmore refrigerator freezer model #596.76503500. The ice maker is not working. How do I check the tubing for ice blockage? We had some dry black substance on top of some of the cubes and I wonder if that could have something to do with no water getting to the unit.

Keeping Toilets Clean at a Vacation Home

We have a golf condo in the Pinehurst, NC area and visit our place about once a month. I clean the two toilets in the condo as soon as we arrive and right before we leave. What can I do to prevent mold/mildew from forming in the bowl while we are gone? I leave the toilet lid open but wondered if I can put some bleach, baking soda or something in the bowl while we are away to keep it clean? Thanks.

Dog is Lethargic After Using Frontline

I have a healthy 9 yr. old terrier mix female dog. My vet discovered she has fleas for the 1st time ever. The vet prescribed Frontline, the kind that is in 3 vials that you apply once a month. She is normally lively and playful but today, ever since I put the 1st vial of drops on her, she has been very lethargic and quiet. Is this normal or should I be worried? Please help. I love her dearly and don't want to do anything to harm her. Thank you so much.

Leash Training a Puppy

I have a 4 month old Standard Poodle pup named Prince. He is a wonderful dog. I am just having the most frustrating time getting him to walk on a leash. We would only get about one maybe two houses down the street and then all of a sudden "boom" he just stops, looks around and refuses to move.

I do have to admit I made the mistake of trying to pull him the first day. When my wife saw me she corrected my bad behavior really quick (it didn't hurt that much). So I searched around online a little bit and saw something about just waiting for the dog to move and then starting back on your journey. But when I tried that it took me an hour and fifteen minutes just to walk to the library at the end of my block.

I am at my wits end. The dog does everything else OK. He uses the bathroom outside when he is supposed to and he is not overly aggressive. So is this something that will get better over time, something that can be corrected with training; or I am going to have to take a very expensive loss (stand in front of Comerica park and give the dog away to some lucky family). I just got rid of something just sitting around the house. My son just left for college.

I just want to go on some nice peaceful walks with my beautiful apricot Standard Poodle. And eventually get another one (white). So if you have any suggestions, please let me know what I should do. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
