Use a Large rubber band to clean paint off your paintbrush. Simply place it over the center of the opened paint can instead of rubbing your brush against the edge of the can.

Using the rubber band (stretched tightly across the top and slipped over bottom of can) also helps by keeping paint from filling the groove that the lid fits into, and thus doesn't dry there and won't make lifting the lid so difficult. Us ordinary guys like these kinds of tips, get it done without too much fuss and mess, you pros like a higher standard because its a matter of preserving the quality of your supplies. To each his own.

I was taught by the pros to never paint right out of the can. Always pour some paint into a different container for trimming. This way, you don't put whatever is on the wall back into the paint can, spoiling the remaining paint in the can. You could use the rubber band method on the trim container, to keep everything neat and clean.

as a professional scenic artist and faux finisher, I was taught not to wipe the excess paint from the brush onto the can or anywhere else. Dip the brush in the paint about half way and slap/tap it lightly on the inside of the can. This slapping motion knocks off excess paint and the paint doesn't get down into the ferrule of the brush. Wiping the brush on the rim of the can causes paint build-up and makes it difficult for the lid to close.
