My rott is having problems with bloody stools and I cannot afford a vet. I have checked the internet for symptoms of hookworm and she does not show any of them for hookworm. Could it be a change in diet or the type of dog food we buy her that can cause this. Please help me and any advice will be useful.

Thanks,

Teresa

You will need to take your dog to the vet. It may be a parasite, My dog gets all the time, and the only thing that makes it better is to take a stool sample to the Vet(its cheaper then taking the animal) and they can tell you what it is, then prescribe the medicine. Over time the dog will get dehydrated and get really sick if you don't. Hope it all works out for you.

My 11 year old rotty went to be groomed last Friday and presented with a nose bleed while there. The vet wrote off as stress. Saturday evening after our walk, went to rest before the car ride home and again a nose bleed. Then Sunday, I woke up to find in bleeding and cont. to all day. While at the ER hosp., given medication and went home after 7 hours. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, all day not a drop of blood and then Wednesday evening came and the nose bleed were violent. Went to vet and they are admitting him for additional tests. THIS ROTTY IS MY LIFE. I CAN'T IMAGINE HIM NOT BEING THERE. WHEN I OPEN THE DOOR TO COME HOME, HE HAS BEEN GREETING ME SINCE HE WAS 8 WEEKS OLD HE IS 11 YEARS OLD NOW THAT'S TOO LONG.

HE DIDN'T EAT SUPPER OR BREAKFAST THE NEXT MORNING. THAT EVENING, HE WAS PASSING BLACK STOOLS, COULDN'T GET OFF THE SOFA, WAS BREATHING HEAVILY AND DIED. HE WAS FINE BEFORE THIS HAPPENED, JUST OLD AGE THINGS LIKE CATARACTS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM.

My male rottweiler, Oscar, is currently having the same problem. I have brought him to the animal hospital because of bloody stools twice in less than a week. He was diagnosed with a severe case of colitis. Dogs are unable to express in words to their owners how much pain they are in. They cannot express if they are feeling sick either. You owe it to your dog to bring him to the vet. If your child had blood in their stool, would you neglect them and not bring them to the doctor because you could not afford it? I would hope not. Pets are like our children. They depend on us to keep them fed, to keep them healthy, etc. You owe it to your dog to bring him to the vet. Some vets will work with you if you are unable to pay for the services immediately. Call the SPCA or another animal orginization such as the Humane society. Sometimes these organizations can give you the number of a low cost vet. I hope your rot gets better.

Please take your dog to the vet. I agree that when you get a pet you owe it to them to have them treated when they become ill. Over the years I've spent thousands on my dog for vet bills, surgery for a bladder stone, a bad knee, etc. It's not his fault that he gets sick.
If you cannot care for your dog it is best to give it up and let someone else care for it.

You could also check www.google.com and do a search for a mystery shop for an office visit at a vet. These pay well and you'd get a visit for free.

please take your dog to the vet. If you cannot pay the entire bill at once, make payment arrangements-most vets will do this. Also, you might want to check and see if there are any grants for free care. good luck-

Please take your dog to the vet. I had a Rott and she had the same problem and many more problems. I had to change vets because the one I was taking her to was not helping. When I found a wonderful vet guess what? It was to late. Don't let this happen to your precious dog. Take her in and find a vet that will take credit cards. Do it soon.

There is no choice but to take her to the Vet or the local animal shelter. We, if we choose to be pet owners, have a responsibility to humanely care for them. Not seeking medical care is animal cruelty and in some cases can result in a fine or jail time.

You must think of this dog first.

Please do what's best for your dog & get medical help immediately. Some vet offices will let you make payments. This isn't going to be the last time you need money to take care of your dog. There are a lot of expenses to properly take care of pets.

I think you definitely need veterinary help. My Pom ingested rat poison and started bleeding from the rectum. He developed Pancreatitis, which means that he can no longer eat fatty foods as they will make his stomach swell up and put him in an extreme amount of pain. At any rate, something is very wrong if he's passing blood.

This could be a very dangerous health problem. As someone else suggested.....maybe the Humane Society could help you with a reduced vet cost.

How stressful, for both of you. Theresa, here's a page that describes various symptoms that may help you determine if this is a brief issue, or if you should be talking to animal rescue/help centers in your area for financial or voluntary veteranarian assistance.

I hope you and your Rottie find this to be a single episode, and enjoy a long fun filled summer.
