Valentine's Sweetheart Cake

This cake is simply delicious and way over the top for decadence. Made specially for Valentine's Day and your favorite Sweetheart, you'll only do this about once a year, so go ahead and treat you both. For this one day, we will not count calories.

Ingredients:

Cake:
  • 1 German chocolate or other boxed mix chocolate cake
  • 1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries, reserve juice

Topping:

  • 3/4 cup fudge topping (like for ice-cream)
  • 3/4 cup caramel or butterscotch topping (like for ice-cream)
  • 3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk 6 regular size Heath Bars (not the little ones)
  • 1 (12 oz.) tub Cool-Whip

Directions:

Cake:

Mix chopped cherries into the cake batter along with the cherry juice mixed with water to equal amount called for in directions on box.

Bake cake in a greased and floured 13x9x2 inch pan. Bake cake as directed on box, but be sure to test for doneness. After baking, do not remove cake from pan.

Topping:

When the cake has cooled, make holes in the entire top of the cake using a large fork or the handle of a wooden spoon. Pour (one at a time) fudge, butterscotch, and condensed milk over the top of the cake and let each flavor soak in before adding the next. Crush 3 of the Heath bars and sprinkle on the top. Frost the cake with the whipped topping and crush the 3 remaining Heath bars to sprinkle over the top.

Servings: 12
Time:30 Minutes Preparation Time
40 Minutes Cooking Time (includes adding the toppings)

Source: The cake is a mixture of two recipes. One is a Creole Valentine cake which has the maraschino cherries in it, and a chocolate boxed cake made on the order of a Red Velvet Cake. Then somewhere I saw a cake recipe using the ice-cream toppings, and I just scrambled them all together and came up with this idea, tried it, and we all loved it. It is really rich and we don't want it all that often, so now we only make it for Valentine's Day, and call it our Sweetheart Cake.

Julia, I think I gained some pounds just reading your recipe but let me know when it's ready as I have my fork and napkin on hand and I'm willing to taste test for you! ;) Fortunately the battery on my scale is dead so according to it,I weigh nothing!
Thanks for sharing everything you do.Looking forward to more.

I've made cheesecake for tomorrow, but we have a birthday celebration next Sunday, so this will make a great birthday cake. I'm not good at decorating, so it'll work out perfectly.

Makes me hungry just reading it.

Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Yum, this recipe sounds too good! Like you, I'd be sitting there waiting for it to cool enough to cut and would gain back every pound I've lost recently and then some, lol! I'm copying it to my recipe folder anyway! :P!

My problem with making a cake this good is I'd want to eat about half of it myself, and would keep nibbling until it was gone. I'll make it when there's a crowd around to eat it all up in a hurry. It sounds really luscious, and has everything I like best in it except pecans, so I might just add some of those to suit myself.

If I continue on this list, I'm going to be needing to buy all new clothes. Ha-Ha. You people have the best recipes on the internet. I like it that they are all tried and true, not just something copied out of a book.

Thank you for sharing them.

I must say that I envy you for being able to eat such wonderful sounding sweets. I cannot eat a bite of anything sweet without gaining another pound, but this is one sweet I'm willing to pull out all the plugs for. I am drooling, and I'm on the way to the grocery store to buy 2 jars of maraschino cherries and 2 cans of condensed milk. One of these cakes is going to lead to another, I know.

I keep the ice-cream toppings for the children, and lots of cake mixes that I find on sale. I also buy several cartons of CoolWhip every time I have coupons or a sale. Wih children, you always need to be ready for anything.

My family is going to be very surprised when I have my fork in my hand waiting for my cake to cool enough to slice. They are so used to seeing me do without. I'm taking your advice this Valentine's Day. Ha-Ha.

Thank you so much for sharing this special recipe.

(Archived Feb 10, 2011)Valentine Cake

Recipe: Valentine Cake

It is fast and easy, and looks nice for a Valentine Party

Ingredients:

  • 1 white cake mix
  • 1 bottle of red food coloring
  • 1 bottle of maraschino cherries
  • 1 can of white frosting
  • 1 square 9 inch pan
  • 1 round 9 inch pan
  • large square board to put the cake on
  • 1 tube of red icing for writing "Happy Valentine's Day" or other message, if desired.

Directions:

Remove 22 cherries and set to one side. Chop remainder of cherries.

Mix cake mix according to directions, using food coloring and cherry juice for liquid, adding water or milk to get proper amount. Add chopped cherries to batter.

Divide batter, half in square pan and half in round pan and bake as directed. Cool before decorating.

When cake is ready to ice, cut the round layer in half, and place one half against one side of the square layer, and the other half against the adjoining side of the square, forming a heart. I usually place my cake on a square cardboard which has been covered with aluminum foil.

Frost with white frosting.

Cut the remaining cherries not all the way through in the shape of a plus sign. They will open like a four leaf clover. Put these evenly spaced around the cake about a half inch from the edge.

Using the tube of red icing, write your message inside the cherry border.

You can also cut white paper doilies in half and place them under the edges of the cake if you want to.

You don't see the red cake until it is cut--it looks like a white cake with cherry decorations. When it is cut it makes you take a second look.

This can be doubled if you need two cakes for a special get-together, by making two layers of each shape, making the heart double layered.

RE: Valentine Cake

This one takes me back many years. I never had any fancy cake pans and this is one that can be made without a specialty pan. I used to make it for our Valentine Day treat. I haven't done so for a very long time, but guess I'll plan to do this again this year. Thanks for the reminder. (02/03/2010)
