Today's Tips

Beware of Icy and Snow Covered Tree Limbs

We just had a pretty bad ice storm here in Indiana. PLEASE remind your kids not to stand under trees as these falling limbs can cause serious injury! :)

By Aeromama

Edtior's Note: Another good reminder is to tell your kids to be extra careful around cars when it is snowing. Cars will not be able to stop quickly and sometimes slide from side to side.

Uses for Old Sheet Music

Creative uses for old sheet music. Post your ideas.

Lampshade - attach sheet music to an old lampshade, then brush with linseed oil & let dry thoroughly before turning on the light. (Be sure to use a low wattage bulb.)

Wrapping paper - wrap up a music lover's birthday gift with sheet music.

Book cover - if you've lost the jacket to a book, cover it with some sheet music.

Uses For Old Refrigerators

Tips and ideas for using an old refrigerator. Post your ideas.

Dryer - suspend an old refrigerator rack from the garage ceiling with a rope & hang laundry on it to dry.

Tool chest - remove the door & store tools & other shop equipment inside it.

Root cellar - remove the door from an old refrigerator, in a well-drained part of the backyard, dig a deep hole large enough to hold the refrigerator box horizontally; line the hole with rocks, then lower the appliance into the ground. Alternate layers of sand or hay with root vegetables. Cover the opening with plywood. Use concrete blocks to hold the plywood in place.

Nature's Thermometers

Ever wonder what the temperature is?

In summer you can use an insect "thermometer" to find out:
count a cricket's chirps for 14 seconds & add 40 to get the degrees in Fahrenheit.

Are the cicadas singing? If so, it must at least 83 degrees Fahrenheit.
Listen for a katydid. If it says "Katy-did-it," the temperature is at least 78 degrees F; "Katy-did," 72 degrees F; "Kaytee," 65; or "Kate," 58.

Night Blindness

Avoid bumping into the furniture when you step into a dark room. Wait a minute or so to let your eyes adjust to the dark. Then focus your gaze slightly off-center-your eye's light receptors are concentrated on the sides of the retina, so peripheral vision is better than direct vision in dim light.

Recuperating From Abdominal Surgery

For those of you that want to get those abdominal muscles tighten and may be recuperating from an abdominal surgery: Sit straight in a chair with coaster and use your heels to push back and forth, you will tighten your thighs, legs, and abdominal muscles without causing discomfort.

By Londra Taylor

Editor's Note: Be sure to ask your doctor at what point in your recovery this would be an acceptable exercise.

Craft Ideas For Old Reader's Digest Books

Yard Sales and Flea Markets are great for picking them up. They have attractive bindings. A few will look good in a bookcase. They are super cheap! They run from .10 cents to .25 cents in my area.

If you have an over abundance of them, they are good to use in craft projects. Glue ribbon on the book like you would do a package and then glue a piece of Styrofoam on top and it can be decorated with artificial flowers. Use as a gift or donate to a nursing home.

5 x 8 inch Index Cards For Recipes

These are great for copying a recipe and printing it. If you don't like it pitch it out! If you have it in hand, you may be more likely to try it rather than save it to your computer, and forget about it.

Saving the Plastic Rings on Plastic Milk Cartons

I use the rings for sorting socks for the laundry. I keep a small tupperware dish on a shelf above the clothes hamper. And then before tossing the socks in the basket I place a ring around them. Then before washing I remove them and put them back into the dish. It saves on a lot of socks getting lost.

Uses for Old Toothbrushes

Below are some uses for old toothbrushes. What are your ideas?

I use an old toothbrush to clean around the base of the bathroom and kitchen faucets. It does a great job, and is soft enough not to scratch the chrome.

I also use one to spot clean articles of clothing, or linen stains before placing into the washing machine.

Buying Whole Chickens

When whole chickens are very cheap, I buy several, and freeze them. I also always make soup-put the whole chicken (remove the inside package), 1 onion, peeled but not cut up, a couple of scrubbed carrots, celery, and garlic cloves in a stock pot or crockpot or dutch oven. Let cook for several hours.. I bone the chicken, putting meat into the strained stock, then I freeze soup in either plastic bags or containers. When I thaw it, then I season it to taste, adding veggies, noodles, rice, whatever I have on hand and want to use.

Uses for Old Maps

Creative uses for old maps. Post your ideas.

Old Road Maps

Cut out designs in starburst shape, etc., and glue to your personal mail to friends. Like, "I am on the road again" or "Come see me sometime", "Heading out again", etc. Use your imagination

Keep Boots or Sneakers In Your Trunk

Ladies, be sure to carry a pair of boots or sneakers in your trunk in case you should breakdown. Dress shoes are not good for walking in an emergency situation. An old warm coat and gloves left in the trunk is also handy to have.

Make Pantyhose Last

When I open a new package, I put the pantyhose immediately in the freezer overnight which sets the mesh and resists snags and tears. When removed and warmed to room temperature, I spray the pantyhose lightly with hairspray. This puts a double-setting on the mesh and ensures that you will get full use out of your pantyhose.

Make Your Own Cold Cream

This is a good inexpensive moisturizer:

  • 1 egg yolk, beaten
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

Combine the egg yolk & the lemon juice in a small mixing bowl. Stirring constantly with a wire whisk, gradually add both oils until the mixture thickens If too thick, add more lemon juice.

Put Dirty Pans And Casserole Dishes Back In The Oven

When I take a baked dish out of the oven, I put the contents in another container, put cold water in the pan, and put it back in the hot (turned off) oven to soak. It is then very easy to scrub.

Letting the Houseplants Get Some Rain

Place houseplants outdoors during a rain to catch the rainwater. Rainwater will help flush out accumulated salts from tap water, too.

Encouraging A Blind Cat To Be More Active

Anyone have any tips on how to get a blind cat to be more active? I have a 2 1/2 year old overweight female cat who has been blind since birth and was declawed by a previous owner before I took her in. She was already overweight and has only lost about half a pound since last year.

I limit her to 1/3 of a cup of weight-management food in the morning and again in the evening. She finds her way around the house very well and she has a docile nature. I've tried various toys that make noise or have catnip smell, but she'll only play with a new toy for a few minutes, then go lay down somewhere, and then the toy doesn't get touched again for weeks!.

A companion cat is not really an option because I have a very small apartment and a young child. I do have a fenced yard and took her out one day, but she kind of freaked. Suggestions would be most welcomed.

Is Replacing The Springs On a Sofa Worth It?

I have a not-so-old (5 years) but clearly not-so-good-quality sofa on which the springs have lost their tautness. These are low quality S-springs. Is it worth getting the sofa "resprung"? Anybody know how much that tends to cost (3-seater) - as much as buying a new set of furniture? Apart from the springs it's in great shape, and there is a matching loveseat which has no problems at all, so it's a bit of a shame to have to junk the whole set on account of the one set of springs.

Thanks ever so much.

Removing Advertising Logos From Coffee Cup

Does anyone know of a way to remove the advertizer's logo imprint on a coffee cup? I have 2 cups, and love the base colors, but would like to get rid of the company logos on them. Would naval petroleum jelly work? I've tried a scratch pad, and citrus stain remover but no luck. Thanks for any ideas to try.
