Today's Tips

Using Pooper Scoopers for Garden Debris

Use a long handled pooper scooper to pick up garden and yard debris. I especially like it for things with stickers such as horse chestnut burrs. Saves the back and the fingers.

Inexpensive Low Calorie Snack or Lunch

I am normally not much of a juice person - but I really like tomato juice when I am dieting. A big glass of tomato juice and some nuts or a piece of low-fat mozzarella cheese makes a nice lunch/snack. (And I can get large cans for 99 cents at the dollar store, too.)

Drive-In Movies

If you have a drive-in movie theatre near you it can be a fun and relatively inexpensive way to see a movie as a family. The ticket price can be similar to seeing a movie in a theatre, but most drive-ins have no problem with you bringing in your own snacks and some even allow you to barbecue before the show. Most drive-in theaters also show a double feature so you get two movies for the price of one.

Pick Up Messes With Bags

There are lots of sticky, nasty things in our kitchens that we have to pick/clean up. When this happens, put your hand into a plastic grocery bag to pick up whatever it is and then just invert the bag and throw the sticky item away. Most of us have lots of those plastic grocery bags on hand anyway so this is a good use for them, too.

Don't Throw Your Clothes Away Until...

I'm very much a believer in recycling. Most of my clothing comes from thrift shops in the first place, then I regularly pass them on to the Diabetes clothing crew for further recycling.

However, at the moment I'm at the stage that even thrift shop buying is out for me. So for now I'm making do with what I have.

Recently I was sorting through clothing intending to put it aside for the clothing crew to pick up and decided that okay, maybe some of these things weren't in the first flush of youth, but surely I could get one more season out of them. Khaki pants that are a bit on the baggy side for me, a shirt that is 5 years old, but still in good condition and so on.

So my thoughts are give generously when you can, but think as well whether you can make do a little longer with what you have before purchasing new stuff (even from the thrift shops!)

Inspect Your Crawl Space

It's not fun, but it's worth doing at least once a year. If your home has a crawl space, crawl around down there and look for bugs and moisture. Be sure to crawl under the bathroom and kitchen and look up at the sub-flooring for watermarks. If you see any then you have a significant leak that needs to be fixed. Also tack up any drooping insulation. If your floor is insulated, be sure cover every inch of your body and wear goggles and a face mask before venturing into the crawl space.

Watch for Bake Sales

If for some reason you don't have time to bake your special event or holiday treats. Watch your newspaper for bake sales in your area and help out the organization that's having the bake sale. Maybe if you need a special treat, you can call and put in a request. Have them hold it for you (give them your name and phone number where they can reach you).

Nasal Spray Tip

Do you have allergies? Does your nose get dry? Do you ever use a saline moisturizing mist (nose spray)? Well, I've had a stuffy nose and of course, other times I had the crusty nose and the post nasal drip and such. I still do not know for sure what's going on but I am beginning to believe I've developed allergies. No one else in the family has these symptoms.

Well anyway, I had bought some Ziacam spray at a drug store and paid high for it ($10.99) and, although it seemed to really help me to breath better, after a couple days I developed a strange smell and taste in my mouth, even though the directions said it absolutely would not cause that and it was homeopathic. I stopped taking it.

Yesterday, while at Dollar General I happened to notice products like that, that they sell. I decided to buy a box of nose spray. It was only $2.50 and it is called 4-Way Saline Moisturizing Mist and is made by Bristol-Myers. It has eucalyptol and Menthol. You just squeeze the bottle and inhale at the same time. It says it is alcohol free, non-medicated, non-habit forming, soothes dry irritated nasal passages and makes nose feel clearer. It says the ingredients are recommended by ENT's.

So far I like it and no side effects. It seems I can breath better. I think this would be good to use in the winter when the house is drier. I just thought I'd mention because it is so much cheaper than some of those other products. The clerk told me she sells a lot of this and people rave about how well it works and such a good price.

Peach Juice Stain on Clothing

Do you have any suggestions on how to get a peach juice stain off a light blue t-shirt? I tried Oxyclean but it didn't work. I haven't put the shirt in the dryer, but have washed it a few times and spot treated the stain each time. I even tried soaking overnight in an Oxyclean powder/water mixture.

iPod Nano With a Cracked Screen

I purchased an iPod Nano and the screen cracked. I was told that this was a problem with ipods. I purchased it at Circuit City and bought an extended warranty, they refused to honor it due to the problem. I have gone to the Apple store and was told by the nasty manager that they do not repair the screens for iPods and that I would have to purchase another one for $199.00 I have been trying for 3 days to call apple and have been put on hold for a least 1 1/2 hrs twice. I will never buy or recommend and Apple product to anyone. Does anyone know how I can get help from apple?

Installing Insulation in My Attic

When I was inspecting our attic I notices that the insulation up there is not in good shape. They used some type of loose insulation that they spread out. There big holes in its coverage and in some places it is very thin. Basically, I don't think it's very well insulated at all. Do I need to replace that loose insulation or can I just put down new on top of it?

Thanks,
LS

Orchids Not Blooming

I have several orchids that bloomed beautifully in my other home but since I move they just send out green and don't bloom. Is there something I can do to jump start the bloom process? I have them under artificial light in the winter, sitting in a tray of pebbles so I can regulate humidity and summer them in a protected spot in the garden for the summer. I also have stems that appear dead and dried but then green shoots will come out. Should I trim off the stems that appear spent?

Christmas Party Favors

Each year I am in charge of our department's christmas party. And each year I have done little table favors for each person attending (generally around 100). One year I did candy canes wrapped with a napkin around the silverware, last year I did candy canes decorated to look like reindeer. Our theme this year is Christmas Around the World. Anyone have any cute and frugal ideas?
