Shine Cookware Handles With Oil

This idea/tip is to make the handles of your cookware look new again. I KNOW that most cookware makers stress NOT to put your cookware in the dishwasher. BUT, when women are working outside the home, every minute counts when getting the dishes/pots done in the kitchen. Thankfully, I am no longer working outside the home. I can focus on looking for new ideas and ways to keep our home bright and shiny with the least amount of effort.

When straightening out the cabinet that holds my cookware several months ago, I saw some really UGLY handles. I decided to try Baby Oil since it is just mineral oil and gentle to babies. I got the unscented kind. Yep, for a dollar at the Dollar Tree. I have used both Q-tips and cotton balls (if I have more that one or two to do). THIS IS NOT A PERMANENT FIX! But it will keep them looking shiny through several washes if you wash them by hand. It surely beats them looking so UGLY!

I just keep the Baby Oil under my kitchen sink and grab a Q-tip from the bathroom when I see one that needs to be re-shined. It only takes very little and I polish off the excess with a piece of paper towel or napkin. I make sure that no Baby Oil gets on any other surface BUT the handles. I felt that this would be the least harmful thing I could use. See the before and after photo. Yes, that was one of my UGLY handles from several months ago. Doesn't it look better?

I almost forgot to tell you that shining them has kept them from NOT returning to their previous UGLY state. I make sure that they look nice and shiny. LOL

Plant Bulbs In The Fall For Spring Flowers

Just wanting to share some spring flowers with you all! I guess my tip would be, "If you want this in spring, get your knees dirty in the fall and plant those bulbs!"

Today's Tips:

Use Old Socks as Cleaning Rags

When my families' white socks get holes in them or end up being strays, I use them to dust. I slip a sock over my hand and it is very easy to dust rungs of chairs, legs of tables and knick-knacks. Your socked hand fits over any shape and gets in all the little crevices, anywhere it is hard to reach. The socks get washed with the regular sock laundry and put back in the cleaning bin.

Source: I got this idea because I dislike cleaning and love anything that makes it easier and quicker, besides I can't throw anything out until it is completely used up.

Make Smoothies With Fruit Waste

I make a lot of edible fruit bouquets which produces a lot of fruit waste. To minimize this, I began saving the "scraps" and tossing them in the freezer. To my surprise, the frozen fruit makes great smoothies and I even use them to flavor my water.

Not only am I saving bundles by creating the masterpieces myself, I get the best smoothies for pennies!

Homemade Cat Toys

At one of our animal shelters, they drill a hole in a plastic coke lid, and put a string through it, and then knot it at the bottom. The cats and kittens seem to never tire of batting these around when they are in the mood to play.

It has to be hung from somewhere, but make sure the cat doesn't have enough string to hang himself.

Advice For Selling Jewelry

At the age of 49, I know I am getting on in years and want to spend more time with my grandson. When cleaning out my jewelry box, I noticed just what items I have held on to that will never be used again, or are broken or have missing sets too. I realized that those things can be put to good use besides just gathering dust, when exchanged for cash and use that money for other needed things.

So I took them into my local jewelry store where they welcome buying your scrap gold and got paid back $89.00. I plan on using that money to take my grandson to see the aquarium. At my age, the memories that we can make from that trip will be more valuable for both of us than those items laying there even longer than the 32 years they have been there just collecting dust thus far.

Weather Alert Radio Tips

Spring and summer are upon us, and my husband bought us a weather alert radio. These last years, I was tired of staying up half the night watching the weather. My husband bought us a midland radio, and I think I finally have it figured out. I put our single S.A.M.E. code in, available at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm. But I never put the weather radio on our specific channel.

Last night, we had a severe thunderstorm watch box, and then a severe thunderstorm warning, and my weather alert radio never went off. If you believe in guardian angels, mine woke me up, and made me look at the Weather Channel, and our weather radio never gave us an alert.

This morning, I reread the instructions on our new weather radio. I was receiving a weather signal from maybe 100 miles away, but not our local NOAA/NWS. So, I changed the channel on our NOAA/NWS weather radio to our county. It comes in loud and strong. We are still set on the single S.A.M.E. code for our county, and Friday afternoon we may get to find out if I finally programmed it correctly, as we may have severe thunderstorms or a possible tornado in our area later in the afternoon or evening.

The manual isn't very user friendly. It tells how to set the clock, the wakeup alarm, whether you want message, audio, or voice, and backlighting, but it doesn't really explain how the weather radio and S.A.M.E. codes work together. Maybe, if I had been in "multiple same codes" the alarm would have gone off last night. I don't know yet.

If you have gotten one of these radios, don't give up. I know someone who has a weather radio, and it drives them nuts because it won't shut up. I am currently trying to help them set it so it won't drive them up a wall with warnings they don't need. I think if we work together, we can remedy this problem with weather radios.

Use Solar Lights to Help Older Dogs Find Their Way

Over the years, we have been blessed with many dogs that have achieved old age. As they did, their vision was often compromised because of cataracts or muscular degeneration. When outside during daylight hours, we often observed them following the fence to guide themselves around the perimeter of the yard. However at night, the same task seemed more difficult for them and they often became confused.

We decided to place solar garden lights as markers to help guide them out to their potty area and back in again. Single solar lights followed the outline of the fence to the area they frequented to do their business. We then placed double lights (side-by-side in sets of two) to mark the path that would return them back to the house to come in. They quickly found their way at night by following the lighted paths!

The solar garden lights helped relieve their anxiety about navigating the fenced yard at night! The lights are found at most stores that sell garden equipment and push easily into the ground on a stake. They sure made a difference for our older sight impaired dogs!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A new soldier was on sentry duty at the main gate. His orders were clear. No car was to enter unless it had a special sticker on the windshield. A big Army car came up with a general seated in the back. The sentry said, "Halt, who goes there?"

The chauffeur, a corporal, says, "General Wheeler." "I'm sorry, I can't let you through. You've got to have a sticker on the windshield."

The general said, "Drive on!"

The sentry said, "Hold it! You really can't come through. I have orders to shoot if you try driving in without a sticker."

The general repeated, "I'm telling you, son, drive on!"

The sentry walked up to the rear window and said, "General, I'm new at this. Do I shoot you or the the driver?"

Shirt Collars Will Not Iron Flat

I have a number of expensive, all cotton shirts. Unfortunately, the collars have become badly 'dented' and creased to the point where they will not iron flat.

Does anybody have advice on how I can remove these dents and deep creases? It's almost as if the collars have some material inside that has permanently deformed, and no, I am not talking about the collar stiffeners. Any help much appreciated.

Box Spring Alternatives

I have a platform bed, it's actually an old water bed frame without the sides. We use a headboard that was passed down from my husband's parents with the water bed platform pushed up to it. The mattress sits on top of the drawers. This was great for a while and gave us some extra drawer space, but now I wish we had a 'regular' bed.

I have the original frame for the original headboard still, but do not have a box spring nor can we afford one. It's extremely rare to find one at a sale around here. Also, I'm not sure I want someone's old bedding. Any ideas as to how I can use the frame and mattress without a box spring and still get the comfort and height of a normal bed?

I've thought about just putting wood pieces across the frame to support the mattress, but then it would be too low. Maybe doing that and putting something strong under the feet of the frame for height, but what? Wood block? I can always hide whatever I use with a dust ruffle.

Which Breeds Make Good Service Dogs?

I really want to get a dog as a pet, but also as an assistance dog for my daughter. She is disabled (wheelchair/non-verbal/epilepsy), and I think it would be so great to have a wonderful dog for us.

I wonder what is the best breed for this type of thing? They, of course, have to easily trainable, smart, not too big, but big enough to do some service work, like picking up an item and giving it to my daughter in her wheelchair. I'd also prefer a short hair, but I can bend on that one. Any breed/type suggestions?

Envirotex Countertops and Food Safety

I have a question about Envirotex and food safety: I've been lurking on this site for several weeks now, interested in going the Envirotex way for my kitchen counters. Yesterday I finally did it. I ran into a few glitches, fixable ones I hope, but my question isn't about that. It's something I didn't think of until after-the-fact.

How safe is the Envirotex surface? Is it as hygienic as laminate? Will it absorb contaminants? My husband and kids are bad about laying their food directly on the counter tops. Should I be concerned about chemicals leaching into their food? Also, now that I've taken the plunge, what do I clean it with?

Thanks.
