A Warm Thank You - Crocheted Hand Towel

A little while ago I sent a request to help me with my dilemna to make a hanging crochet hand towel. I'm very happy with it and very grateful for all the help, the meat fork worked for me! I wanted to place a picture of my towel for you to see.

Hamster Cage Cleaning Made Easier

Litter train your little critter and you'll cut down on the number of cage cleanings required.

To get the little fella trained, just put a little clumping scent-free kittty litter into each corner. When your little friend had decided which corner will be the "outhouse", you can use a closed in or open accessory specifically designed for such use. Just put a little of the soiled kitty litter in with the fresh stuff (until he gets the idea, then just use clean) and your critter will use the "toilet" every time. It really cuts down on the odor that small animals can cause and you won't need to change the shavings as frequently.

Today's Tips

Saving Money on Gas

Tips for saving money on gas. Post your ideas.

Conserving Gasoline (Petrol)

We try to conserve gasoline in our vehicles by combining as many trips as possible so we are not going in and out so much. The more trips you have to make, the more gas you use so it is wisest to make a list of all the places you have to go and figure out the best route to use and only go out one time for everything you need to do.

Recommendation for Removing Odors

Removing odors from your home without spending a fortune! This has worked for us! Pet odors, smoke odors or anything! It is called Odo-Ban! This is the bomb! You can get it at SAMS club. They guarantee it! We thought we would have to throw out carpeting and bedding, but found this an it works! All you do is use it as a rinse after you have steam cleaned something or use it instead of downy in the rinse cycle of your washer. This stuff works for everything!

Recipes in a Small Kitchen

My house has a very small kitchen and there's no where to put my recipe while making something except on the stove or counter where it gets dirty, so I have put up a 12 X 12" piece of cork on the front of one cabinet door to tack my recipe to.

Marking Clothes for Children

I have five girls under ten. We are always getting their clothes mixed up, especially things like jeans and solid color t-shirts. Now I make a mark on the label with laundry pen: one line is the oldest, two for the next. When the child outgrows the item, I add another line. Thus the oldest girl's clothes has one line, girl #2 has two, girl #3 has three, etc.. The older ones can even do it themselves when they realize the sleeves have grown too short, add a line and it will automatically be put in the drawer of the next girl down.

Storing Nuts

Walnuts -

Store shelled nuts in the refrigerator on the upper shelf
will last about a year. Frozen walnuts will be good up to two years.
If shelling your own, remove the papery section that is between
the two halves-it's bitter.

Pecans -

Pecans absorb odors from food--store in airtight containers.
Shelled pecans will last about 9 months in the refrigerator and up to
2 years frozen. You can also use them and refreeze without losing
taste. In the shell they will keep in a cool, dry location for six to
12 months.

Peppermint Ice Cream

My sons love peppermint stick ice cream. We always have leftover candy canes so I break them into small pieces (while still in the wrappers) and sprinkle on vanilla or their favorite ice cream.

Saving Money on Laundry

Tips for saving money on laundry. Post your ideas!

Use Half

I have been told that using 1/2 of the amount of laundry soap that is recommended on the bottle in the wash does just as good of a job as does using the whole recommended amount. It is also easier on your machines, both the washer and the dryer. Soap build up affects both of them. Using 1/2 of a dryer sheet or half of the recommended use of liquid fabric softener also works well.

Saving Money on Weddings

Our oldest daughter is getting married in June and we looked into having a wedding coordinator do the decorating. It turned out that the coordinator wanted almost $1,400 just to decorate. She was not going to do anything else! It didn't take us long to decide that we would do the decorating ourselves! We have had lots of friends come forward and offer to help and after pricing many items, I predict we will spend 1/3-1/2 as much as we would have if we had opted to have the wedding coordinator do the work. Sometimes doing a job yourself saves a lot of money!

Organizing Shoes

Organizing shoes in a limited time; If you have any wall space inside or outside the closet, get wood (1"X2") and make a frame in the allowed space. Then, get thin pegboard and cut to size of that frame you made and nail it or screw it on. Then, chose from the various elongated hooks that fit that pegboard for as many pairs of shoes you can hang.

Using Smaller Amounts

We have tried to teach our children that you don't have to use a large amount of soap or shampoo or toothpaste, etc. each day. Just a small dime to quarter size dollop of shampoo or conditioner will thoroughly wash and condition your hair. And remember, the more you put in, the more you have to rinse out! Also, we use more toothpaste than we need to. A dollop the size of a pea in the middle of the toothbrush is sufficient.

Preventing Static Cling

Tips for preventing static cling on clothing. Post your ideas.

'Tis the season for pretty skirts and knee length boots--but how do you keep away from static-cling?

Spray your panty hose (if you wear them) with your aerosol hairspray! It works great and it is a lot less expensive than the sprays that are made for the same thing!

Lemon Sauce For Stale Cake

When I was a youngster my Mom never threw out cake that had gone stale before it's time. She would make a yummy lemon sauce to pour over the stale cake and I must admit, sometimes I would not eat the cake and just wait for it to go stale.

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg, well beaten

Organizing Shoes

I am looking for a way to organize my shoes. I only own enough pairs to fit in a large plastic tote box, but I am finding out this is not a good way to keep your shoes. Not only can't you find pairs, but keeping them in a plastic box isn't a good idea. I don't have much space to work with. Do any of you creative, thrifty readers have any ideas on how I might organize them? Thanks for your thoughts.

Jayne.

What Are My Figurines Made Of?

A few years ago I picked up a bunch of small animal figurines at an auction. They were quite detailed, but you could see they were homemade.

One person I asked said they might be from a very old craft which some how hardend flour and salt into a molding clay that has considerable weight. This clay is way past plaster. It can only break in chunks.

I was wondering if anyone out there might know about such a substance.

The dog I am holding right now is 5 inches long about an inch and a half wide, yet weighs well over a pound in bulk.

Yes, I know what the clays used in kilns are like. They aren't this.

I got these animals in Amish country. I have never seen anything like them since.

A clue all these animals are very white. A few have been glazed.
ANYBODY - PLEASE? - Mr.Thrifty

Clean Used Engine Oil Off Tarmac

Does anyone know a cheap way to remove used engine oil from tarmac? Our old car had a leak (now fixed) and there's a big black mark we need to get rid of in our parking space.

If there's no cheap way, whatever works would be great. Apart from a pressure washer as we don't have one. And please tell me the product ingredients and not the brand name if you're not in the UK.

Thanks

Rotten Tomato In Car

I had a tomato spoil while under the seat of my car (not sure how it got there). After I removed the tomato, there was some juice that had soaked into the carpet. I tried carpet cleaner but couldn't get to the spot. I then tried pouring white vinegar on the area. The vinegar neutralized the smell for the most part, but not completely. And now I have a vinegar smell in the car--not good but better than the rotten tomato. My question - how do I get rid of the vinegar smell and any lingering rotten tomato smell? Thanks in advance for your help.

I stored pictures and picture albums in there, and now everything smells like moth balls, oh to have that 'musty' smell back again! Is there something I can do to get rid of that moth ball smell now? We recently moved to WA state and I have the albums on a shelf in the office, and the smell just wont go away. HELP!
