If you end up with a clothing item you would never wear but like the pattern, think about using the material for pillows, quilts, etc. You can also stock up on material from clothes for quilts at bag sales from thrift stores or yard sales.

I made a warm lap quilt out of flannel shirts, I just cut 4" squares out, sewed them back together. warm, cozy, thrifty!

I buy alsorts of old clothes from jumble sales and 2nd hand shops to use in craft. If I have loads and loads I sit in the back garden (if we ever get any sunshine) and remove all the beads and glitter stuff to save money!
Even the most NAFF material can be turned into a treasure!
