Duke (German Shepherd?) Rest in Peace

No tip just a picture of my dog and best friend for the last ten years. His name is Duke and he would do ANYTHING I asked him or I taught him to do. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with some sort of cancer about two weeks ago and we had to have him put to sleep last week.

Weeding Tips

Tips and ideas for pulling up weeds. Post your ideas.

Weeding When the Ground is Wet

Weeding used to be such a chore for me until I discovered if the earth has been wet for a while the weeds pull out so much easier and I am more likely to get the root than when dry. Also I seldom disturb the surrounding plants. This is so much easier.

Sand for Aquariums

Instead of the more expensive sands and other substrates at the fish store, go to your local hardware store. For natural sand use play sand, for black sand, use black sandblasting sand, for white sand use white pool filter sand. Silicates should be avoided but otherwise these sands work for freshwater or saltwater tanks and infinitely cheaper. It might work for reptile tanks but I don't know about that. Substrates at the fish store are between $15-$20 for 20-25 pounds. Sand at the hardware store cost between $2-$5 for 50 pounds.

Save Energy and Money When Doing Laundry

More ways to save money on energy costs:

  • Wash all clothes in cold water.
  • Put clothes through a 2nd spin cycle in the washer to get even more of the water out before putting them in the dryer.
  • Hang your clothes out to dry.
  • If I come across any more tips I'll pass them along.

Removing Hair From Jewelry

I keep a small bottle of the cream hair remover, like Nair around to place my necklaces in when they have tangled hair balled up around them. Take the cap off filled with the cream. Soak the necklace for about five minuets and the hair just falls off. I mention this to my jeweler and he thought it was a wonderful idea. Does not hurt the jewelry and leaves them nice and shiny.

When you wash your car, make sure you have a soap that will not damage the paint. Dish soap can damage the paint. I buy a soap made especially for car paint.

Teaching A Child To Be Thoughtful

The other day while babysitting my Grandson told me his friend across the street had the day before had a birthmark removed so she couldn't come out and play. I suggested he get out construction paper and make her a card and take it to her. Certainly this was no life changing experience, but the seed was planted. We live in a pretty unthankful society. Have you ever noticed how many gifts you've given without a note of thanks ever being sent. I'm not suggested that we quit giving, but we CAN make a difference by teaching our own children to write Thank you notes and send cards at a young age. Let them make little gifts and crafts for others.

On Mother's day we made his Mom some scented bath salts and a card. They don't realize until we show by example that doing for others adds joy to our own lives. Another way to encourage a child is to allot just a small amount of spending money and take them to Dollar stores on special holidays, letting them choose a gift for someone special. Sometimes we get caught up in our own gift giving and forget that they want to be GIVERS too.

My children are grown now and I hope that thoughtfulness is one lesson I have taught them well. Plant the SEED early in life and watch it grow!

Additive to Dish Water

If you add about a tablespoon of baking soda to your dish water it will add some cleaning power to your dish soap and it will also make your hands very soft.

Making More Room for Towels

If you have an over-abundance of towels and not enough room for them on your bathroom shelves, try rolling them instead of folding them and putting them away. Takes up way less room!

Getting Streaks off Windows

If you have just cleaned your windows and they are streaky, try taking a dry, unused blackboard eraser over the glass and you will see the streaking disappear. This also works for mirrors and other glass items.

Preventing Bacon Grease Splatters

I keep a shaker, with large holes, filled with flour beside my stove. When I'm frying bacon, I sift some on the bacon in the pan. The bacon does not swivel up or spatter as much when frying. The bacon goes farther because it lies flat. It's much neater too when making bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches. I also sprinkle some on squash and okra when I'm frying it because I like the crispness it gives.

Making Your Own Baby Food

Money is really tight right now and we have a 4 month old little boy, so instead of buying his baby food I make it myself. It is really easy, I buy fresh fruit and vegetables, peel the skin and puree it in the blender, and just add water until it is the right consistence. I have made carrots, squash, peaches, apples. It is fun and saves lots of money!

Being a Good Patient at the Doctor's Office

I work in a doctors office and I see some big time wasters caused by the patients that I would like to pass on to you.

  • Patients hate when they have to wait for the doctor so please, please be on time to your appointment. Even 5 minutes late causes a big ripple on down the line.

  • If you cant keep your appointment then call the office as soon as possible to cancel it.

  • Don't assume that just because Dr. is smiling and laughing he doesn't have more patients. He or she usually does.

  • Have all your questions and information written down so you will be ready when the Dr. comes in. Bringing someone with you can also help.

  • When you call the doctors office. Please remember that he or she is seeing people in the office. If the doctor doesn't call back within the hour please don't call the office back, they will call you back.

  • Please don't use your cell phone when in the Drs. Office. It is very annoying to the other people in the waiting room. Go outside or even into the hallway if you have to be on the phone.

  • If the nurse asks you to get on the scale assume it is because the doctor has told her to put you on the scale.

  • If your baby has a stinky diaper, ask for a plastic bag to dispose it in. Do not put the diaper in the trash can, either take it with you or ask the nurse to dispose of it outside.

  • Please don't bring the children and then expect the office staff to babysit while you are with the doctor. We are working, not there to babysit.

  • Finally please be friendly. I am a person and so is the doctor. I love my job and most of the patients. But there are some that are just plain rude.

Spirits of Ammonia

My mother used to take an combination of coke cola and spirits of ammonia. It was maybe 4 drops of the spirits of ammonia in a coke glass and drink. I now use it when feeling upset beyond control. I told a doctor about it the other day and she had never heard of it.

They used to sell it at the drug store called READS. They also sold it at Murphy's and Woolworth's. it was on the menu as coke and spirits of ammonia. You can also use it in orange juice.

My question is, has anyone else heard of this?

Thank you,
sandy

Training Pomeranians

I have a small male pom weighing nearly 4 lbs. He is having trouble in the potty training area. I let him out in a safe place and also keep potty pads on the floor for emergencies (he
uses the pads fairly well but when I allow him out of the enclosed area he pees again on the carpet even after just eliminating on the pad).

He is shy and doesn't like to come when he is called. I have tried coaxing with treats but he just wants to run and play. When it is time for him to come indoors he will scratch to let me
know but then will not enter unless I move across the room and then return to close the door.

He lets me hold him and cuddle when I do catch him. I have been very gentle in scolding when he makes mistakes and always reward his good actions with treats. Could it because I am the "one" that always puts him in his crate and scolds him?

Please, someone give me some advice. My main concern is the potty training - he is nearly 6 months old and knows because when I say outside he is eager to go.

Thanks,
Nelwyn
