Release Your Inner Child

I am 56 years old. Snoopy and the Peanut Gang are my favorite friends. Every day, I must buy a toy for myself because my childhood was so beautiful, it's so difficult to part with it. I also surround myself with many small kids and throw parties for them on Christmas, Easter and Halloween. I am not a grandmother yet. However, nothing will change when I become one. I will still buy toys for myself. I created space to see my collection. This is only one side of the room that you are seeing. Please release the child in you and set it free. You have no idea how happy you'll become.

Quick And Easy Decorated Baby Shower Cake

Bake a cake (either mix or from scratch) in an 11x15 inch pan. This size requires 2 cake mixes to fill. Invert onto cardboard or plastic cake board immediately after baking.

Icing can be made by the Decorator's recipe (1 bag powdered sugar, 1 cup Crisco (do not substitute), 2 drops Butter flavoring and a very small amount of water (less than 1/4 cup) OR you can buy Ready-to-spread Vanilla icing and stiffen with powdered sugar for decorating. Spread the sides with icing leaving the top undecorated. Decide on the colors you want to use. Mix your colors in separate bowls using food colors. You're ready to decorate!

Using a ruler and a toothpick (to mark your lines), mark your cake off into 4 squares. Using cookie cutters, mark off in the center of the squares the design you choose, again outlining the design with a toothpick. Using a plastic cake decorating bag filled with tinted icing and a #21 Wilton STAR tip, fill in the square. Hold the tip to the cake, squeeze and pull up. Follow this method until all the squares are covered except for the cookie cutter pattern. Then repeat the same procedure to fill in the pattern of the cookie cutter. Your cake should be covered. Then pipe a border around the top, using the same tip. Squeeze to the cake, pull UP and to the right side to make a ROPE effect. This makes a really cute and EASY designed cake for your next shower or party.

Hannah And Her Kee-Kee

This picture is of our granddaughter Hannah on her second birthday. She has a kitten she named "Kee-Kee". We are trying to teach her to be gentle with Kee-Kee. She likes us to wrap the kitten in a blanket and she carries Kee Kee around, of course, the kitten escapes. Hannah is learning to be a caring, gentle pet owner. There is nothing sweeter than to see a child's love for a baby animal.

Today's Tips:

Use Paper Grocery Bags For Mailing

I re-use paper grocery bags by folding them and using mailing/packing tape to make free mailing bags. Just cut off the bottom, or "flat" part. Wrap the item as you would a gift, using staples or tape to fasten the sides. Make sure to put tape over the sharp part of the staples. You can actually save money on postage by using this method instead of a box, which adds weight. I have also re-used USPS Priority Mail bags and boxes by turning them inside-out. I figured they would just be thrown away, so why not? Happy mailing!

Make Extra Cash With Your Used Books

If you have a few minutes and would like to clean out your book shelves, you can try selling your used books at http://cash4books.net. From what I've read on the site, they are mostly interested in non-fiction, but you can check it out for yourself. The site and process is very simple. You log onto the site, put in the ISBN number of your books and they tell you immediately whether or not they are buying the ones you have. If they are, they tell you how much they will pay you and send you a postage paid mailing label which you can print off. The service keeps you well informed. They let you know when they receive your books and processing did not take nearly as long as I expected. I had a check within weeks. It's definitely worth a shot.

By Marie from West Dundee, IL

Editor's Note: It looks like they really focus on text books. Another great place to to sell books is Half.com. They also allow you to enter an ISBN number and they show you how much the books has sold for recently. If someone orders the book, you toss it in the mail to the person. You can make money from both non-fiction and fiction, but like the above site, newer editions of non-fiction textbooks are the best sellers. Amazon.com has a similar marketplace for selling your used books as well.

Dryer Sheets For Shining Faucets

If you need to clean and shine your bathroom taps in a hurry (that's faucets to you guys, I believe) grab a soft rinse impregnated sheet, meant for adding to your clothes dryer, and just buff for a great shine. Can be doubled up to clean around the back of the taps and leaves no reside.

Non-Food After Their Expiration Date

I think that stores should donate past date items to shelters and food banks. But, many of the donation places in my area won't take items that are past date. This is stupid and wasteful. Many people would be glad to have items and not care what the date is (me included). It is not true that past date (non food) items are dangerous. The Government would not allow something to be sold if it could poison anybody. Old items just lose some of their effectiveness. If the consistency is good and it smells ok, go for it. Big companies want us to be wasteful so we will buy more of their products. They lie about products "going bad" so we waste and spend more money. I use toothpaste that is more than 10 years old because I was taught not to waste anything. It's fine, nothing wrong with it. Most products will separate if they are not usable anymore. I have also used 20 year old separated shampoo, just shake it up and go. If it smells funny, use it to clean the toilet. Everything has a use and should not be wasted.

How Long Will Your Appliance Last?

This was in the Dallas Morning News. The idea being that if your appliance is older than the age posted, start saving up for a new one or expecting breakdowns. A friend quoted to me something about "if an appliance repair is over $150, buy another one". I thought she said this nugget of info came from Consumer Reports - but I am not positive.

Another friend went appliance shopping, looking for an expensive something or other that would last a lifetime. The clerk told her that nothing is built today to give that kind of use and to just get the least expensive one that has all of her requirements.

Make Sure Patio Furniture is in Good Repair

When you bring out your patio furniture, check that it's still in good condition - especially wood or wicker. I knew someone who was in an accident when the wicker chair he was in fell apart and he fell off an elevated patio!

Bargain Frozen Bananas

What a treat! I found very ripe bananas for $1/5 pounds. Very few were soft, so I took a chance. I also bought some chocolate shell, because I remember frozen chocolate covered bananas from my days of working at Knott's Berry Farm. I peeled as many bananas as my large round plastic food container would hold, breaking each one in half. They got sprinkled with lemon juice to retain their color. Then they went into the freezer, carefully covered. The next day I poured chocolate shell over them, and it set up immediately. But there wasn't enough chocolate to cover them all, so I got on the net and found a recipe that is way cheaper than the $2.59 teeny weeny bottle.

You melt 3 tablespoons of butter and 2/3 cup of chocolate chips over low heat together. That's it. Pour it over ice cream of frozen bananas. That made enough to finish the batch. We have enjoyed frozen bananas since then, and there are enough for about 25 servings. That left a bunch of the ripest bananas. I mashed them up and made the equivalent of four loaves of banana bread. We had company for dinner on Sunday and ate some. I sent a loaf home with one of our guests. And the other half of the batch will be served tonight at our grandson's going-away bash. Since I had almost everything on hand, I spent only $1.10 for bananas and $2.59 for chocolate shell.

You don't have to use regular milk chocolate chips for the shell. Mine were the kind that are filled with peanut butter. I'll bet bittersweet would be really good. And it probably came out to a total of 65 servings of dessert. YUM! Now I'm watching for a sale on chocolate chips!

Be Careful About Personal Information On Websites

Please be careful about giving out personal info on websites, including thriftyfun.com. Last week I posted a comment about a cute little dog photo on thriftyfun.com. I then got a message from the woman saying I sounded nice and could I email her at her email address. I did so, and now have received 4 spams from her. They are about politics and what not and are chain emails. Nothing I am interested in. I am glad I didn't give her any personal info and I'm glad I have good security on my computer. From now on, I'll stick to messages through thriftyfun.com, and not give out my email address.

Freeze Milk Before It Goes Bad

To use up milk or cream when it is nearing the expiration date, I will freeze into ice cubes. I then will pop them out and place into a freezer bag for later use. When I have a recipe that calls for milk, I will pull out what I need and thaw in the microwave on defrost. Works like a charm! Approximate measurements: 1 cube = 3 Tablespoons, 3 cubes = 1/2 cup, 6 cubes = 1 cup, etc.

Whining Weimaraner Puppy

I have just got a beautiful Weimaraner pup called Archie and he is only 8 weeks old. I know that I am probably expecting miracles but he has a tendency to whine when we put him into his basket area where he sleeps, at night every couple of hours and during the day as soon as he wakes up.

Today he started to whine whilst playing too so I'm a little concerned. I'm booked into the vets on Saturday but I was wondering if this is quite normal for a young pup? Any suggestions on his training too would be very much appreciated.

Removing Contact Paper

We recently removed contact paper that had been applied to the outside of all our kitchen cabinets. All of the paper came off, but it left a very sticky adhesive residue on the wood cabinets. We've tried everything under the sun, but haven't been able to remove it. We've tried MEK, Acetone, Turpentine, and something that Home Depot recommended. We need to get it off so we can sand and then paint. Help! Is there something that would work for this?
