Halloween: Laundry Basket Costume

You will need a large white bedsheet. Cut out a hole in sheet to fit over your head. Try to center the hole in the middle of length of sheet. You will need a round plastic clothes basket with most of bottom cut out to fit over your head and rest on your shoulders.

You will need assorted empty laundry containers such as detergent and fabric softener both liquid and powder and sheet boxes. Use yarn or string to attach items to sheet. I used safety pins to pin the string onto the sheet in random pattern. Use assorted clothing items such as socks, bras, undies, PJ's etc to drape over top of basket and hang onto sheet. The funnier the better.

Everyone loved my costume at the costume party we attended!

In Memory Of Diana (Striped Tabby)

Diana was nineteen years old when she finally spent her ninth life. She was a striped tabby. I got her from a friend when we were both in the sixth grade! Diana and I were together through middle school, high school, college, and my entering the workforce. She heard a lot of stories and was the best secret-keeper.

Diana's favorite thing to do was purr. I'm not kidding. Her little motor ran at all times. Her other favorite hobby was throwing up hairballs which wasn't quite as enchanting. Diana's feet looked like little mittens since she had extra toes on each paw! Her distinctive tracks would even show up in the carpet!

Zoey (Australian Shepherd Mix)

Zoey is a 3 year old Australian Shepherd mix (heavy on the mix.) Zoey is a pound puppy! Adopt a pet, it's a wonderful thing to do. She loves to play ball. Zoey is a very hands on kinda dog. She will 'paw' you to get your attention. She doesn't care where she lays, we call her speed-bump quite a lot!

Today's Tips:

Use Ice to Water Plants

I have a few plants in my home. One day I didn't have time to water all of them, so I was passing them on my way out and dropped a few ice cubes from my glass in them, just to keep them fresh until the weekend when I had more time. Well, I found that this became a habit and my plants stay watered better and have even begun to grow more.

I found out the Ice melts letting the plant "sip" the water instead of drowning it as you do when pouring the water into it. It is a more natural growth.

Make Absorbent Circles For Your Coasters

I solved the drippy coaster problem in which condensation drips all over my study materials. Why didn't I think of this sooner?

I took a piece of the cloth that is advertised to absorb ten (or maybe it's more) times its own weight in water, cut it in a circle to fit the stone coaster, and now, presto, between the cloth and the coaster, no more drips on the text books!

Halloween: Spooky Stepladder Ghost Decoration

I did this years ago, but it was really fun, and met with a lot of excitement by those who came by for Halloween. I set up a 6 foot stepladder, close to the house and kind of apart from the light, which was on so kids wouldn't trip and fall. I hung a white sheet over the ladder, and set a very small, moving fan on the fold out part where you put a can of paint or whatever. (The ladder is turned so that the fold out part is at the back).

Now, to top it off, put a good size pumpkin, heavy enough to hold the sheet in place, (or tack the sheet first), on top of the ladder, with a really good face carved on it. You can use a candle, or be safe and use something that is not going to burn. I did use a candle, as I was watching constantly.

Here is the very best part, tuck a CD player or such in a safe place, and play appropriate, spooky, Halloween sounds. The combination of flickering light, slightly waving sheet, with the fan aimed down to just give the hint of movement, then the spooky sounds? It was a hit!

Source: I made it up, about 20 years ago, and all the neighborhood kids loved it!

Magnetized Pen For Fridge Notes

I have those notepads with the magnets on my fridge that are so convenient for writing down kitchen items that need to be purchased. I just never seem to have a pen handy!

So I bought some small magnet discs for another project and decided to hot glue a leftover one to a favorite pen and stick it to the fridge by the notepad. With the magnet stuck to the pen, it is a reminder to put it back on the fridge when you are done instead of taking it somewhere else.

Store Razor Blades and Steel Wool in Soap Gel

I found years ago, that shaver blades as well as soap pads will last for a long time, if you keep them in soap gel, I believe that the soap gel keeps metal from pitting and rusting, so they stay newer longer.

Make the soap gel made with just water and a sliver of a soap bar in some type of container. Make sure it is jelly like, and just rinse your shaver blades well. Then put them into the soap gel between use, and I found that the blade(s) were just as sharp as when new for months for my leg shaving.

With the soap pads, I put one into a smaller empty margarine tub, and cover it with water, and the next day, the soap turns into soap gel, and just take the now steel wool pad in the soap gel, and using the soap gel to clean your pots and pans, rinse it out, and put the pad back inside the soap gel, to keep the steel wool from rusting. The soap pads last longer that way, and when the soap gel is gone, start new with another soap pad in the tub.

I also cut them in halves (good for sharpening scissors too), and one half is cut into quarters, so that I have a larger piece, and two smaller pieces.

Source: I'm not sure, but, it's probably from a long time in Heloise, or similar. :)

Hydrogen Peroxide Stain Remover

A short cut and very inexpensive tip for cleaning stains on a carpet is to get a bottle of peroxide at wal-mart or any other store and put a spray nozzle on it. Every time you get a stain, or spot on a carpet, spray the peroxide on it. Wait about ten minutes then take warm water with any dish liquid that has lemon in it and blot up. The spot will be gone.

It's cheap and it works on blood if you spray the peroxide on immediately. The blood will just disappear, you can imagine what it does for any stains with color. You do have to try and get the stain early. if you let the peroxide sit it on an older stain, it may lighten the spot rather than remove. Just remember to also use dish liquid or soap powder with lemon. The peroxide is the best. I have six children, two dogs and a cat and lots of parties and spills at the house but the carpet looks great.

Good Luck!

Source: First Aid Class taught me the peroxide will remove the blood and disinfect it

Cleaning Heater Ducts

How do you clean heat ducts? I sanded down our hardwood floors, now the house gets dusty quickly. I think that in spite of sealing the ducts up, some sanding dust got in the duct work. We priced having them cleaned, but it was over $500.00. We have geothermal heat, which is cleaner than heating with fossil fuels. Our ducts in the basement are sealed, so we can't take them apart. I'm tired of dusting every 3 days.

Wedding Gift Ideas for a Second Marriage

My brother is getting married but isn't having a wedding celebration. They are just going to the city and signing the papers to make their union legal. I won't be there but I will be the following week and wanted to bring them something.

She already has 4 of her own kids (her second marriage) and they are in their 40's. They have a house together with everything and don't need anything. Any ideas? They are both very low key people. Thanks!

We will be hosting a Halloween party for about 45 adults. I would like to play a game such as Family Feud, however I would like to make it different so we can all observe and all take turns playing. I would like to skip the hit the bell round. Can anyone give me some ideas? I have lots of questions and answers from surveys. I just can't figure out how to approach this without it being boring.
