Rascal (Australian Cattledog) and Baileigh (Border Collie)

Here is a picture of Rascal and Baileigh. A picture was being taken of Rascal and Baileigh had to get in on the action too. Rascal is 9 years old and is an Australian Cattledog. We have had Rascal since he was 8 weeks old. Baileigh is a 3 year old Border Collie and we adopted her 2 years ago from a local rescue group. They both love to play with squeaky toys and chase balls in the backyard along with going on long walks.

Remedies For Stinky Feet

Tips for preventing stinky feet. Post your ideas.

Tea for Stinky Feet

Brew two tea bags in one quart of warm water and soak your feet for ten minutes. Do this every night until the problem is gone. Then you can soak them periodically. Tea is terrific at keeping your feet odor free and it also will keep your feet perspiration free because of its tannic acid.

Removing Clingy Styrofoam Peanuts

Easy Theme Birthday Cakes

For birthday cakes, ice cream or regular, I use a theme napkin and put on the top of the cake. Then I outline the napkin or part of the napkin with piped icing. It looks like a movie premier sheet. The kids love it and you get the true picture!

By Kelli Hermsen

Editor's Note: What an easy way to create a themed cake. Just be sure to tell the kids not to eat the napkin. :-)

Whipped Cream Icing

Use real whipped cream for icing. Just whip it up and add flavoring at the end for a tasty treat. I personally like to use vanilla, almond extract, or Bailey's cream liquor (for adults only).

Locked Your Car Keys In The Car?

Argh! Locked out of your car? Here are some tips to help you out. Post your ideas.

After locking the keys in my car twice, I learned an expensive lesson. I invested in an inexpensive, but powerful magnetic key box, put an extra key in it and stuck it on a metal substrate underneath the car. Be sure to invest in a strong magnet box so you don't lose it on bumps. A $2 investment saves $40 to $60 in car opening charges. It's a "no-brainer."

Suitcase Planters

Old hard suitcases work well as planters. Drill a few holes for drainage in the bottom and lay somall rocks over them then fill with dirt and plant. Also, try closing the lid and cutting a space in the top for a plant to grow out of instead of just leaving it open.

Easter Pound Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) Butter
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 3 cups all purpose Flour
  • 3 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 2 cups Sour Cream
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Directions:

Cream butter; add sugar and cream together. Add eggs one at the time mixing well after each. Add vanilla to above mixture.

Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together and add to mixture alternately with sour cream. Mix well, but do not overbeat.

Batter will be thick. Spoon batter into 2 loaf pans which have been lightly greased and floured. (Shake out excess flour)

Bake at 325º F for 50-60 minutes checking for doneness after 50 minutes. If not done in the middle, return to oven for the other 10 minutes. Check again for doneness.

Because of the various sizes of eggs used, the moisture content of flour, and your own oven temperature accuracy, it could take an additional 10-15 minutes to get properly done.

Pound cakes are most often baked at a lower temperature than other cakes, giving the eggs a chance to do all the leavening, but this cake has both baking powderand baking soda as well, so it will rise more quickly and thoroughly.

When done, cool in pan on wire rack for 5-8 minutes, then turn loaves out onto wire rack and cool thoroughly.

Optional: Dust tops lightly with a mixture of 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tsp ground cinnamon, or use confectioner's sugar to make a lacy design with a paper doily.

Julia

Colonial Pound Cake

Here is another pound cake that is even easier.

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks Butter
  • 1 1/2 cups Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Mace
  • 5 Eggs (large)
  • 2 cups all purpose Flour
  • 1/2 tsp each of vanilla, orange and almond extracts (Optional)

Directions

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at the time, mixing really well after each addition in order to obtain the maximum volume of the eggs

Sift flour with mace and fold into above mixture, mixing well, but do not overbeat. It will toughen your cake.

Spoon thick batter into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 325º F for 1 hour, then testing for doneness. It may take longer (an additional 10 minutes or so) for your cake to reach the desired doneness. Check it again after 10 minutes.

When done, remove from oven and allow to cool on in pan on wire rack for about 5-8 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack and allow to cool thoroughly.

You may choose to lightly glaze this pound cake with a mixture of undiluted frozen orange juice and confectioner's sugar. Use about a cup of confectioner's sugar with 2 TBS orange juice. Add more sugar or juice to get desired pouring consistency.

Pound Cakes are the most versatile cake to keep on hand. It can be served with sour cream, whipped cream (flavored or unflavored), ice-cream or fruits (fresh, canned or frozen).

Julia

Restoring the Cedar Smell in an Old Cedar Chest

I have a cedar chest that was mine as a young girl. The top is now gone and for many, many years it has held toys for my kids (now grown) a nephew, and now my Grandson. I love the old chest and now that I'm OLDER I appreciate it and would love to strip off all the old paint, have a new lid made and try to restore it. My question is how do you get the old Cedar smell back or does it just die out and can't be revived? I'm just curious if anyone would know.

Help For Severe Eczema

I have had allergies, asthma, and eczema my whole life. I just celebrated my 28th birthday by staying home because I am embarrassed to be seen in public. My eczema was very severe from birth until I was about 5. In my teenage years, it was bad on the back of my legs only.

About 4 years ago, I got a severe sunburn on my face, neck, chest, and shoulders. I had to go to the hospital to be treated for it. Now, my eczema is all over my body but the most prominent spot where I was sunburned. I have been prescribed lots of creams and ointments and I am allergic to everything I have tried. Even if something works at first, I seem to develop an allergy to it.

My face just looks terrible all the time. I can't wear makeup anymore. I can apply moisturizer 7 times within 1 hour of getting out of the shower and my face still dries right up. It is flaky and red and I have scratched sores in it from itching so bad. If my face sweats, it instantly makes my eczema go crazy. The dryness in my face has started to cause deep wrinkles and I look much older than I am.

The only medication I have taken that clears it up and makes me look normal is prednisone. I know it is bad for me in the long run and in the past it made me gain a lot of weight but I don't know what to do now. When I take the last prednisone pill, I feel like I start itching from the inside out. My skin will still look normal from the prednisone treatment but it will be burning and itching so badly I can't stand it!

I have done elidel, protopic, cortisone, eucerin, Lubriderm, Crisco, dermatop, mineral oil, olive oil, and a million other things I can't even think of. I also have a baby girl who will be 2 next month. I don't want her to suffer because of my skin. It is not a vanity thing although I would like to feel presentable, it hurts all the time.

There are no more good days and it seems like no one can help me. Please help me if you have any ideas or advice. It is getting very depressing.

Kori
