I find that mirrors help. You can make a room look twice as big and it's not that expensive. A friend of mine found that she couldn't afford big mirrors so she started getting smaller ones at thrift stores. She put them on two opposing walls and the small hall looked twice as big, plus it reflected the outdoors in. So the sun, leaves, flowers and more came in to brighten the entryway.
