Today's Tips

Air Out the House When Cleaning

Do yourself and your senses a favor by opening up windows when you use caustic cleaners. Opening up various windows and doors will help air circulate throughout the house and help freshen everything. An even better approach is to avoid these type of fumes by using cleaners like baking soda and vinegar whenever possible.

Cleaning With Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol, is effective in many cleaning projects. Put it in a small spray bottle and it works well for cleaning and shining chrome faucets. It also can be helpful when trying to remove ink stains from fabric and upholstery. Always pretest the alcohol in an inconspicuous spot before using on a stain. Isopropyl Alcohol can be purchased in the grocery store or the drug store. It's usually in the first aid aisle. Look for sales and save.

Designing Your Own Purse or Handbag

My daughters are purse fanatics, and I wanted to find a way to keep them entertained while my younger daycare kids had nap time. So, I went to a local craft store and bought some denim purses in varying sizes, along with iron ons, craft glue, glitter, beads, fabric puffy paint, ribbon, and colorful pom poms. The girls spend hours designing their own purses, and have made some also as gifts.

Cleaning Glass Doors On Wood Furniture

If you have a nice piece of furniture, like a China cabinet, with glass windows surrounded by wood, don't spray glass cleaner directly on the windows. Some of the cleaner is bound to get on the wood and can damage the finish. Dampen a rag with glass cleaner and then wipe the window clean with the rag.

Cleaning With Salt

Salt makes a wonderful and ecological friendly cleaner. A paste of salt and vinegar help clean tarnished brass or copper. If you spill wine or grape juice on your carpet you can cover the stain with salt to absorb much of the stain. Soaking washable fabrics in salt water will help remove many stubborn stains. Salt can be purchased in the spice section of your grocery store. Buy in bulk and save. For cleaning purposes use plain salt not iodized salt.

Design Your Own Clothes

My daughters like to 'design' some of their own clothes, which often means they will be either cutting or adding something to their clothing. I have a hard time watching them alter a pair of jeans I just paid $50 for, so, I started going to the local thrift stores to buy newer looking, or vintage looking clothes in my kids' sizes, and they can design all they want without me worrying that expensive brand new clothes will be ruined. Bonus - they end up with original outfits that no one else at school has.

Muddy Footprints

When you get muddy footprints in my house or car, sprinkle them with baking soda and let them dry. Once dry, vacuum up the dirt and then clean any leftover stain with Resolve or a similar carpet spot cleaner. If you try to clean the mud when it is wet, it will just spread it around and make the stain bigger.

Terracotta Cookware Item

I found a unique item at the thrift store and bought it, and I am wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I am sorry but I don't have a camera for the picture but it's a terracotta cookware item that you would use over in a fire.

It is like a pie cooker that you use on a camping trip. Two slices of bread and some pie filling, over the camp fire. It is made in Italy and on it, it says "LA SALUTE E NELLA COTTA" in a circle across the top and the other part of the circle on the bottem it says, MARCHIO DEPOSITATO.

Through the middle it says, LACOTTA and made in italy.

If any one could help I would be very greatful!

Thank you!
Patty

Hawaiian Pie

In the 1960's my mother used to make the most delicious cold pie she called Hawaiian Pie. It used a prebaked coventional piecrust, and was filled with a layer of bananas and pecans, then a cooked custard filling, then more bananas, pecans and coconut, topped with whipped cream and more coconut.

I have looked for this recipe everywhere and have been unsuccessful. Did she make this recipe up? After my mother's death my stepmother got rid of all her cookbooks as she didn't cook. So I can't ask my mother and can't go through her recipes. I'm lost!

I've looked on the internet, but none of the recipes I've found have been the one. You had to let this pie set in the icebox for a day before eating and I would count the hours. I could eat a whole one by myself. Please, someone out there have this recipe from my childhood!

Removing Paint From Rough Fogged Bathroom Window

I got paint on the rough fogged glass of my bathroom window. Most tip websites suggest using a razor blade, but that is for smooth normal glass. This is bumpy, bubbly fogged glass. The paint is in the grooves of the glass.

I also tried a goo-be-gone liquid on the advice of the guy at the hardware store but that didn't help.

I guess I could use paint remover but I am afraid it will get on and ruin the window frame and force me to repaint.

Removing Wax From a Boat
By kathy

I waxed my boat, had to leave for a week and now am having a hard time getting the wax off. I used an orbital polisher but that just seems to make it harder. Water makes it gummy and adding fresh wax does too. Elbow greases is working at about an inch per hour. Please advise, thanks.

Need Some Ideas for Making a Bed Frame

We recently moved into a new apartment and realized that our Queen size boxspring would not fit up the stairs into our bedroom. Our last bed frame broke, so we had just been using the boxspring and mattress on the floor. Now we just have the mattress on the floor and I really want to find some sort of bed frame. Can anyone give me some ideas of how to make a bedframe? Anything will do so long as the mattress is off the floor. I don't have a lot of money right now so am looking for an inexpensive idea.

Thanks so much!

Justina

Nail Polish in Bathtub

My lovely little kitty was having her nightly whoo Haa and knocked a basket of nail polish over. Two of which fell into the bathtub and shattered. I now have huge splatters of gold and red polish all over the tub. I am a renter and adore my landlord and my deposit money. Nail polish remover did NOTHING. The works, nothing. Any suggestions?

Please and Thanks!

Cheap Cleaning Tricks
By Cyndi Roberts

It's not necessary to invest in expensive products in order to keep your home clean and sweet-smelling. You can clean almost anything with a few products that you probably already have on hand.

You can do lots with baking soda:

To freshen rugs and carpets, sprinkle on baking soda and leave for about 15-30 minutes before vacuuming.

Sprinkle baking soda on those black heel marks on your vinyl flooring. Use a wet sponge to wipe off.

Pour a cup of baking soda down any drain and follow with a few cups of boiling water to keep drains running well and smelling good. You can use baking soda just like you would use a powdered cleanser to clean your sink.

White vinegar is another staple for cleaning:

Use 1/4 cup white vinegar in the rinse, instead of regular fabric softener.

Use vinegar and water in a 1:2 ratio to clean glass surfaces.

Vinegar will clean water spots from stainless steel fixtures.

Mix a little white vinegar, liquid dishwashing soap, and water together for a mild upholstery cleaner. Be sure to test in a hidden spot.

Clean your washing machine of soap scum by adding a 1/2 cup of vinegar and running through a cycle.

Wipe out your refrigerator with vinegar to clean, deodorize, and help prevent mildew.

Hairspray is another item that helps remove stains: spray it on ink spots and wash as usual.

A good way to clean that "ring around the collar" is to pre-treat with a little shampoo. Just work it in with an old toothbrush.

To make your stove top easier to clean, occasionally rub it with car wax.

Experiment a little, and you may find your own ways to add to this list!

Does anyone have any idea how to remove "puffy paint" from clothing? That was SUCH a bad idea when it was the "cool" thing to do, and now I have a really great t-shirt that's more or less ruined because of that crazy stuff! Please send any "remedy" to aprilmathews1120@hotmail.com! thanks.
