Chloe and Her Friend Gambler (Horse) Last year my husband lost his job due to the downward spiral of the economy and we had to move in with my sister-in-law who had a large ranch and graciously took us in. My 6 year old daughter Chloe developed a very close touching relationship with "her horse" Gambler (actually a neighbor's who kindly left it in our pasture as well as teaching Chloe to ride, care for the horse and continue her doting relationship until we moved). During such a stressful time watching this happen between my daughter and this amazing loving animal was a lesson I could never have imagined. This picture helps to sum it up and reminds me daily how precious life is. By Babetta Conklin from St. Peters, Mo Contest Contender!

I was surprised to see a Monarch butterfly resting in my front yard at night. It was there for at least 5 hours that I kept checking. During a windy episode, it even moved to the other side of the driveway marker. It had been a long time since I had seen a Monarch. I don't use any pesticides or herbicides or lawn chemicals, so maybe that's why I was lucky to see a Monarch again. What a lovely gift from God. By OhioGirl from NE Ohio Zone 5 Contest Contender!

Buddy is 6 years old and a Miniature Dachshund. I got Buddy when he was 8 weeks old from a private breeder He loves to be held. He's a real snuggler. He also loves any toy that squeaks. We've had to teach him what it means when we say "stop squeaking!" He loves to sleep on the suede pillows I made on the couch. It's his favorite place during the day. At night, he's under the covers with me! He also loves to play with our standard Dachshund, Princess. They chase each other and wrestle all over the house. If one is outside and wants in and I don't hear, the other comes and tells me. If one is outside and barks, the other just has to go help with the barking! Shop Thrift Stores for Great Deals Since this is a thrift site, most people will know about thrift stores. If anyone needs a reminder, though, please remember some thrift stores are done really well: having nice clothing and blankets, as well as some appliances and dish/cookware for some cents to a few dollars. They also are a great place to find craft/gift supplies. By Davidicdancer from Spokane, WA Editor's Note: What are some of the items that you have purchased at a thrift store. Any great finds? Supplemental Nutrition For Dogs When feeding your dog and you want to add supplements as suggested by one other participant, be certain to not only include beef, chicken and veggies. Also include chicken or beef livers, they have the most nutrients! Yougurt with probiotics is also essential for the digestive system. Cottage cheese great dairy for bone development. Omega 3 fish oil capsule one a day for coat and circulatory system. Keeping our pets healthy is great for them and for keeping them with us as long as possible. Study Tip: Rewrite Lecture Notes Here's what I found helpful when I was in college. The notes I took during lecture were usually messy, and could be hard to read and study from. Therefore, I would rewrite my lecture notes. I would use 3-4 different color pens (to help highlight important words, concepts, etc.). I rewrote the notes on loose leaf paper so I could easily access them in a binder. I always tried to rewrite the notes within a day or so of lecture, so that the information was still relatively fresh in my head. I found this to be a great study tool, both as I rewrote the notes and when it came to studying for exams. After I had completed the classes, I kept all my notes. I found that I used them for reference for other classes (especially those in my major) and for tutoring other students. By Melanie from Iowa Contest Contender!

Make Dry Shampoo With Baking Soda and Baby Powder I mix baking soda with baby powder as a great dry shampoo. I recommend the lavender/chamomile baby powder. The baking soda cleans off build up, and the baby powder soaks up the oil. It's absolutely great when you don't have time for a shower, and gives your hair great body! Eat Cereal Later in the Morning Do you feel low of energy after you eat your morning breakfast? If so, try just eating a piece of whole wheat toast with a glass of orange juice. You will feel so great. Then wait about 30 minutes, and eat your cereal, whole grain. You will notice a big difference in how you feel. Eating cereal first sometimes makes your blood sugars go up and slow you down in the morning. If you like cereal, try eating a bowl before going to bed. It works great at night. Use "Normal" Setting to Prevent a Smelly Dishwasher In answer to smelly dishwashers. Well mine was over the top with smell. I was using an 'eco' cycle being the good human and trying to reduce our water usage. I had a buildup of muck at the bottom of the dishwasher so I would clean the filter etc. but to no avail, it still was stinky. Just for a change I thought I'd try one of the other cycles available. Guess what, I used the 'normal' wash setting and, behold, the smell disappeared and has not come back. Yay! I know it sounds simplistic, but that was all I did. Place Reminder Sticky Notes on Your Steering Wheel If I really, really need to remind myself of something important to do, I put a sticky note on the steering wheel of my car. Example: stop at store on way home from work to get milk, go to the bank, etc. I've had a lot on my mind lately and it's easy to forget to do things I need to do. Use Peppermint Oil to Make a Cooling Spray You can keep cool by adding a few drops of peppermint oil to water and shaken well in a spray bottle. The peppermint's contact to your skin cools you down instantly and it lasts quite a while too. Make sure you test before spraying yourself down, probably around 5 drops may be enough, although it's all down to your own preference. Just don't use on children, as it may be hard to tell what their threshold for the coldness of the oil is. You can also take a bath with a few drops of peppermint oil to cool you off. Use common sense and stay out of the sun after using because the coolness of the oil may be deceiving! By MelWasHereTuesday from Winnipeg, MB Contest Contender!

Remove Tree Sap from Your Hands I asked Jeeves how to remove tree sap from hands. I saw an idea using baby oil and baking soda. While I was going through my bathroom, I couldn't find any baby oil but I found my trusty bottle of Purell hand sanitizer. I put the usual amount on my hands and it seemed like magic, the tree sap simply vanished. I then washed my hands, and all is good in the land of evergreens! Rate It: Natural Remedy for Bags Under Eyes By the time this gets in a newsletter, I will be 68. I am way overweight. I have never worn makeup. I have been told I look years younger than I am. The one thing that bothers me is I have loose, baggy skin under my eyes. When I wore glasses, it was covered up. Now with eye surgery, no glasses, the bags are very, very obvious. Rate It: Getting Smell out of Couch Cushions My daughter recently had an "accident" on my couch after sneaking down to sleep there during the night. Seeing as how it sat there all night, the urine soaked deep down into the couch cushion. I tried spot cleaning with no luck at removing the smell. I finally removed the cushions and soaked them with bleach water, rinsed out, and squeezed as much water out of it as I could over the next few days as I let them air dry in the hot sun. Now that they are dry, the entire cushion now smells horrible. The water I was squeezing out of the wet cushions did not smell at all, so I am really shocked by this (really wondering if there was a reaction between the cushion material and the bleach that caused this). I tried spraying it down with a vinegar water solution and let it dry again, didn't help at all. The dumpster is looking like my only option right now, but I really can't afford to buy a new couch and even replacing the cushion is outta my budget from what I have seen online. Any ideas? Rate It: After I finish painting, what is the proper way to close up a paint can to preserve it to be used again? I've heard many different ways to save paint. One is to put some in a glass jar. One way is to cover the paint can with plastic then put on the cover tightly. Another way is to cover can tightly then turn can upside down so no air gets into the can. What do you suggest? Cindy S.
