If you love sparkling cider, but don't want to pay extra for that little pretty champagne bottle it comes in, try this:

Add a little apple juice to chilled seltzer water or club soda. Tastes just the same and you get more for your money.

This is actually not a new idea: The Germans have been doing this for years. They call it Apfelsaftschorle. But that doesn't make it any less a great taste treat!

No, it is not technically cider when prepared this way, though you can make it with real cider, too, if you want. And yes, you can use other kinds of juice to make this type of sparkling drink. Grape juice works especially well, but orange juice less so (depending on your tastes, of course). You can do this with virtually any kind of juice, though.

Instead of buying expensive sparkling apple cider to have for your special holiday celebration, you can make your own economical version that will be just as good.

You can make it using frozen apple juice concentrate. Just add three cans of seltzer (unflavored) or club soda instead of water. It is cheaper and serves more, and no one needs to know that it didn't come out of the expensive green bottle! Just serve it from a glass or decorative pitcher.

I like cider, cider is good. Will this work with concentrated orange juice and is it really cider? (12/03/2006)
